Me, start as Burgundy with the plan of weaking France early. see France is strong with strong allies, England is opposed to me so i cannot join their war. decided on a new plan, decide to weaken the HRE by dismanteling it. see i stand a chance on becomming emperor. rethink my plan, new plan, become emperor. i am winning, austra gets one of their buffs, they are winning, i rush down any diplomatic reputation i can. spend a hell of a lot of money on all the electors, im winning. austria gets more buffs, they are winning. rush more buff myself. we are even, 1 month i am winning, the next month austria is winning. the Emperor dies, I WIN! i can now expand in the HRE without having to fight the Emperor, I AM THE EMPEROR. expanding. in one of my war the Elector Palatinat betrays me and is fighting on my enemies side. i invite Trier, Mainz, and Bavaria to join on mine. win the war, split the palatinat between Trier, Mainz, and Bavaria. now and elector slot is free, i need to choose a new elector. i see a very nice candidate called Cleve, i blessed them with the electorship. because they are allied to my next war target. declare war on Friesland, Cleve join their side. Emperor dies Marie is now the Emperess!!! ALL HAIL EMPRESS MARIE. win war, vassalize Cleve. I'll start by saying I wish Steam would allow the option of a Neutral review, rather than just up or down. I'd give this a Neutral if I had the option. I'm giving the review with only a small amount of time played because I am familiar with the series already and the crux of my comments don't really have anything to do with the gameplay. Although I will say that while the graphics were an upgrade from 3, the interface is ugly and absolutely horrible. As far as the nuts and bolts of the game, I would say it appears to be byzantine and obtuse mechanics that masquerade as deep and complex systems. But as far as these types of games go, PDX does do generally well and it is commonly accepted that it is a decent game overall, building on the legacy of EU 1-3. Now to the real heart of the matter with this game and this company, and that is the rapacious and predatory pricing. Again, this is nothing new and has been part of their business strategy for many years. The bundle I purchased (at a steep discount else I would never have) here on Steam includes the base game (which is a mere skeleton) and a few of the DLC. There is still several hundred dollars at least of DLC you need to get to really flesh out the game. If you are going to get even the base game be prepared for this eventuality and aware that you may have to wait to find a really good sale to get all of this content. Now that isn't the entire issue. Certain DLC, such as the Purple Phoenix Byzantine DLC have been removed for sale by PGX and you can only get access to this now by subscribing for a monthly fee. So if you are ignorant of this fact, you might drop hundreds of dollars on their products and then end up having to pay a monthly sub just to get some of the content you actually want, a sub which would also have included all of the DLC you paid for already. A monthly sub for what isn't even a live service game? That is PDX level of greed folks and just be aware of what you are getting into before you decide to buy into the base game.
This game probably ruined my life, but I had fun. Yippeeeeeeeee
