I loved Eschalon Book I, its one of my favorites RPGs, but I don't like this one. The story is incomplete (it doesn't finish its main storyline, and finishing the game on a cliff hanger). During all the game there's one evil race, the Taurax, then, in the middle of the game you hear something about an even greater evil, buy you never hear from that again... until the end... from not begin important in the plot to be the main bad guy in just 3 seconds. Horribly executed. On gameplay it identical to the first one... except that here I firmly believe that the enemies are way too unbalance during all the game. They have hit too hard, and you don't have lots of chance of hitting them. I finished at level 19 and honestly it was a punishment for the most time. idk, I want to like it, but I not. I hope Book III is better.

Eschalon Book II starts out promising and a fun niche RPG, but you soon realize the RNG is just a stick for the game to beat you with repeatedly. I'm fairly certain those 33% chance to hit enemies who hit virtually all the time I might add, are invisibly buffed to do so. Whilst my 68% chance to hit, misses all the time to the point where I'm reluctant to even use melee or a bow and just rely on definite hit spells, but of course then you just run out of mana after one fight.. It's impossible to fight anything without running away to rest espcially if the enemies outnumber you, forcing you to fight 2-3 and run away constantly. And well the enemies outnumber you in every single fight lol, It just gets tedious to have to run and rest then run and rest. Also another grating mechanic- The price to identify things.. You actually almost lose money IDing Items when selling them afterward, unless you have tons of mercantile skill which again leads to another problem the impossible to maintain at useful levels suite of too many skills. With the measly 3 skill points per level that you get and a one time book boost of 2 points, if you find the right book that is, you just don't get enough points to keep up with the game difficulty imho. Especially as you need about 10 points in every skill for them to even be useful. Example - Lockpicking, my 9th level char had about 10 lockpicking one point per level roughly and Burglar's Gloves which give +2, yet still for most EASY locks only had less than a 30-40% chance to open them, the hard locks were like 10% lol. As I said the RNG is horrible in this game and as much as I love to save scum my play time away sitting by a chest all day just to open an easy lock with a SKILLED thief,(Sarcasm) I think I'll do something more interesting with my time now and am done with The Eschalon Series.
(Follow my curator for more reviews like this) I reviewed the first game here recently. I had some issues with it, but played the sequel right after - and it's a clear improvement in pretty much every way. It simply has more of everything and feels a lot more polished. The most obvious difference is that it's a little longer. The first game took me around 9 hours to finish. This took 13. The world is larger, there are a few optional areas and dungeons, lots of side quests, and a large city with plenty of content. If you liked the first game, you can stop reading here and just get the game: it's more of the same in a good way. The second most obvious difference is the graphics. The original's resolution was a mere 800x600. This has been increased to 1024x786, which is still a low res for modern standards but allows far more visual detail and larger fonts. The game looks great for a solo dev indie title, with various landscapes, vegetation, monsters, etc. Visually everything is well-designed and easy on the eyes. The upgrade over the first game is noticeable. Character creation has also expanded. You can now choose your character's sex (first game only had male) and there are several new skills to learn. There's also an optional hunger & thirst mechanic, and an optional equipment durability mechanic. I played with hunger & thirst on but durability off. You can customize it however you like. The core character system remains the same. All the old skills and spells remain and work like they did in the first game, though some were buffed. Cat's Eyes is now far better at making you see while wielding a torch, for example. Weapon skills now give you a special ability for that weapon once you've invested enough points in them. World design has been improved, too. There are now weather effects that happen randomly and impact visibility on outdoor maps, like overcast skies dimming the sunlight. In the city of Port Kuudad, there's even a guy who can give you a weather forecast! Cool little detail. Most importantly, the movement speed, which was my biggest issue with the first game, has been increased. It's only a minor increase and it still felt a little too slow for comfort, but it's a noticeable improvement over the first game, where it felt really sluggish. Again, Cheat Engine's speedhack doesn't work (it makes your walking animation faster but the screen scrolls at the same rate), but that's not as tagic here. Almost everything in this game is a straight up improvement over its predecessor. I only have one complaint: weapon switching was a lot simpler in the first game. You equipped a primary and secondary weapon and switched with one button. Now you can save two equipment SETS and your character changes his entire loadout with one button, which is annoying as you have to re-save your loadout every time you change one item. Other than that, it's simply the first game but better. More quests, some of them with different outcomes (although rarely). A city filled with secrets. A challenging optional dungeon. More interesting loot, as weapons can now have enchantments. Better graphics. More polished skill system. If you liked the first game, this is a clear recommendation. If you had some issues with the first, this might be worth checking out as it improves upon every aspect. If you didn't like the first at all, you won't like this either because it's basically just more of the same but better. Overall I quite enjoyed this and hope the third game continues the upward trajectory of improvement.
I played this when it came out many years ago and loved it. it has aged fine with the exception of the inability to speed up walking. gui is better than in book 1 which is a bonus. I've done an archer build super viable and crazy fun and a mage build. if you like old school crpgs... this is a bargain.

Very cool game! It's the first game I bought in Steam and not regretting it one bit.
