It has some fantastic humor, charm, and story - but also really needs to have a refresh for modern hardware. Puzzles can be quite challenging, even compared to other Monkey Island games. The earlier 3D games haven't aged as well as 2D art (Curse of Monkey Island aged better in this regard). Would love to see a remake similar to Grim Fandango; where even just the characters and models get updated, with improved controls, quality of life improvements (including hint system). Remember to save often, as can crash too!

2/5 This game is hardly playable. I wasn't even half way through when I hit a game breaking bug. Ozzy Mandrill could never leave Pegnose Pete's shack, he would always get stuck, and that is where my game ended. Whatever, this game has some of the worst controls in a game I've ever played. Everything is keyboard only. There is no menu to display the key bindings either so you will need to go online and look up how to move around and what buttons to press. F1 should help you get started. Never in my life have I had to use the Page Up and Down keys until now (to shift selections). Arrows to turn, Shift runs, U, L, P, and I ( thats i ) , for most everything else. One more thing, the game is so old and busted (thanks GrimeE engine) that the game takes over the entire main screen (monitor) and you have no access to anything else on your system. No windows key, Alt+Tab, nothing. You can download EMI Launcher to help with that but it's not much better. And if you want to stream it, even then OBS still cannot detect it as a window or otherwise. EDIT: I watched the rest of the game played through and I was very disappointed in what I saw. The puzzles must be some of the worst ones yet, even worse than MI2. Dialog didn't get much better but most of that was skipped. Yet the environments were so dull and Monkey Kombat is pretty terrible. I thought the insult battles of the past were over done but this isn't even fun to begin with. It's just a super annoying Rock Paper Scissors game.
This game is raw/sick you need a walkthrough tho otherwise I literrally dont know how anyone solves this game without it, would take soooooooooooooooooooooooooo long. Big up guybrush and the mandem.
Like many, I considered EMI one of the weaker Monkey Island games, but replaying it now for the first time in a while, there's a lot about it I really enjoy and I wish I had replayed it sooner. Once you get past the early 3D style, what is left is still a great game with interesting puzzles. Monkey Kombat is definitely a little tedious, but I think busting out the traditional insult fighting would have felt worn out. There's nothing I can say about the game that hasn't already been said - but I wanted to comment on was compatibility in 2026. On Windows 11, it did work, but Steam Overlay did not, and therefore neither did the Steam Controller (at least - you couldn't configure the controls, nor did it work in Joystick mode). I also tried the Open Source EMI Launcher project to no avail. Fine for KBM mind you. What impressed me was that it worked flawlessly on Steam Deck and I quickly created an improved Steam Controller layout that made playing a delight.
The fullscreen mode from this game would not let me tab out of it or do anything else on my computer while it's open. Controls are terrible, they removed mouse support and it's clearly designed for consoles but controller support hardly works. After spending hours on configuring it, the experience of moving and interacting was taking me out of the game all the time. I'll stick to a gameplay for this one.
even if you can get it to work, dont bother. please
