After 5 1/2 hours, here are my thoughts. Feels like an old Game Boy Color game. This isn't a bad thing though, it plays well. Compact game, easy mechanics and something you can play for a few minutes or a few hours. Pick your class, your perks, your extras, dive in and adventure! Music has that retro chip tune to it that fits the way the game is designed. The rogue-like element can actually make for some pretty crazy floors. Permadeath, while it can be frustrating, is only a minor setback in this game. There is some input lag, especially on the first couple of screens, but otherwise there isn't anything super wrong with the game. Also, the "one size fits all window" might irk a few people but it is a minor inconvenience at best. Overall, it's a solid purchase for anyone looking for a quick fix. Need more info?
Two thumbs up! Easy recommendation for fans of simple yet straight forward rogue-likes
Not my finer reviews, I apologize, I have just been so strapped for time lately but I really wanted to throw a thumbs up for this game. Definitely deserves it and Del Duio is one of the most stand up devs I've had the pleasure of meeting.
What I like about this game!
-Simple yet challenging -Easy to play, hard to master -Lots of ways to die -One of the purest dungeon crawl roguelikes you can play -Different classes to shake the tree -Great humor and overall a "feel good" game -Unlocks and other things of that nature to keep you engaged for sometime -There's a 'graveyard' that keeps record of all your runs and stats. I'd also prefer some overall stat tracking but it's something and I appreciate it. -Pixel art is funky but I love it. -The music is very upbeat and is just my style. Really enjoy it. -Lots of enemy variety that have their own attacks -After you level up to a certain point, low level enemies instantly die -Battle sequences are very cool and remind me of old SNES RPG's for some reason -A good variety of events to be found whether it's statues you can touch, shops you can visit or other places you can visit to meet a variety of interesting characters.
What I think can be improved
-More unlocks! Only 1 class can be unlocked and other things are finding tips you have to buy and discovering items. Would appreciate more things to find and unlock. -Better explanations of certain functions. The lantern colors were super confusing at first, would be nice to know what's going on there. -Ability to name our characters and just more customization options in general. -Needs fullscreen even if it makes it look worse, I'll take it! -More options! Very little can be tweaked or adjusted. -Maybe more control on character leveling, is pretty much automated. -Hunger system doesn't feel good to me. Either needs to be more extreme or non existent. As it is, its like every so long you'll get hungry and grab some food (its abundant) so it's more of an annoyance than a mechanic. -When starting a game you're reminded to equip items, would rather just start with them equipped. -Some enemies are noob traps which felt cheap. Looking at you monster plant! There's a sequel for this game I know and some of my complaints have been taken care which is good. I think out of the two games though, this one is my favorite just because of the fact I have more things to work towards and felt a bit more streamlined to me than the sequel. I can also look at my past runs (graveyard), there's some unlocks and really is just a simple yet effective coffee-break roguelike that you can enjoy for 10 minutes or 10 hours. Not saying the sequel is a bad game, it has way more mechanics and features than this one does and fixes a lot of annoyances but also has some quirks too. It's a tough call! Truly, this and the sequel are just a blast to play! Highly recommend this series for fans of roguelikes. They're not perfect but they are damn fun and were created by a single dev who happens to be an awesome person that's worth supporting! Definitely worth adding to your roguelike collection.
Quick paced dungeon run, with a lot of different things going on. There is an impressive amount of verity packed into this simple/old school, dungeon crawler.
Equin: The Lantern This game is one of my favorite roguelikes of this year. It has some unique ideas that come together and really deliver a good experience. As you play you find a palethra of items to use from equipment to wear and consumables, there is plenty to keep you coming back again and again. A lantern that changes colors will influence many aspects of the game and you will gradually find out how through tips you can buy at stores. Many items have hidden properties or diffrent uses that take some expermenting to find out. You may think at first that the game is a little easy but the difficulty sneaks up on you the deeper you go. And there are a total of 50 floors that have random events that can happen, anything from timed floors, reversing controls, or anti-magic fields. There are a ton more things I have not found yet but it is really keeping me entertained and I can't wait to play more. Oh and one more thing, The music is so good.
No full screen, no way to turn off the music or configure controls. Simply move one square at a time through mazes that are pretty much the same every level. Gather a few items, find ladder and go down one level. Wash and repeat. Nothing new. Slow. Waste of time.
A fun, roguelike game where you play as a bunny who ventures the dangerous dungeon. Reasons Equin is worth playing: All of the class options have their perks; able to equip certain items, more Exp, different stats. I personally like the thief and the warrior, but all of the options are worth checking out and playing through with. Warriors are strong and have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ magic defense, and as expected, he can equip any armour and can use two-handed weapons. Thiefs have awesome skills like poison, and a high rate for unlocking chests. Warriors are pretty weak but have decent spells(that don't miss), so use this one if you want a challenge. The cleric is useful for learning skills capable of vanquishing the undead. And as for the unlockable class... well, you'll have to play and find out for yourself! There are a LOT of items in this game, and since the game is generated randomly each round, chances are you will always be finding new stuff that you haven't seen before. It goes without saying that some finds are better than others. I would advise that you read the description before consuming/equipping your item, as there are dangerous and cursed items as well. There are shops and cultist dens available if you've got money, or in the latter, if you're willing to sacrifice some of your health for a cool sword. Depending on the day, you might get special bonuses. Holidays especially. The gameplay itself is well done, and the combat style is turn-based. There is more to Equin than you might realize at first. There are hidden rooms, level events that alter how you play(indoor rain, time bomb, monster infestation, etc.) and the different lantern phases. For example, a yellow lantern clears your hit streak bonuse. I enjoy playing Equin: The Lantern and recommend it!
Looking forward to checking the sequel out.
Love this game but 2 things I don't like are this. I can't find how to go fullscreen and I want the actual game zoomed out. I hate the big fat sprite but I can deal. overall a keeper.
Easy easy and then first boss will kill you on 3 turns
A very good game replayable in short bursts.
