Kairosoft’s "Final Frontier" that perfectly blends colony management with surprisingly fun RPG combat. Epic Astro Story is a fascinating entry in the Kairosoft library because it was one of the first times the studio successfully mashed their city-building formula with an active RPG battle system. You aren't just managing a cozy planet; you’re pioneering a literal frontier. The game does a fantastic job of making you feel like a space explorer—building up your colony, researching futuristic tech, and sending out away teams to uncover secrets in mysterious caves. It’s got all the charm of a classic Kairosoft title but with an added layer of "Space Race" excitement that keeps the pacing feeling much more adventurous than your average business sim. The combat system is where this game really shines and distinguishes itself. Unlike their purely economic sims, here you have to actually care about your residents' stats and equipment. Watching your tiny pixelated colonists line up to take on waves of space chickens or giant octopi is endlessly entertaining. It feels like a simplified precursor to Dungeon Village or Beastie Bay, striking a great balance where the battles are deep enough to be engaging but simple enough that you don't need a spreadsheet to win. Plus, the Star Trek inspired resident names and the ability to attract alien tourists from across the galaxy give the game a witty, sci-fi personality that is absolutely infectious. While it might lack some of the massive QoL features of the newer "2" sequels (like Dungeon Village 2), there is a tight, focused quality to Epic Astro Story that makes it a perfect "no-brainer" classic. It’s the ultimate "one more expedition" game; you’ll find yourself saying you’ll stop after you finish exploring one more cave, only to realize you’ve spent the last hour perfecting your interplanetary export routes and upgrading your spaceport. It’s a delightful, relaxing, and slightly goofy journey into the stars that proves Kairosoft was ahead of its time with the "Sim-meets-RPG" genre. 9/10 — I came to build a space colony, but I stayed to watch my residents punch space chickens in the face.
