I'll start off by saying I can't stand dark souls, I think dark souls is the worst game ever made and as I started playing this game, it became very obvious the description isn't lying and it really is similar to dark souls. I hated every minute of the tutorial because of this but then came the boss fight, as I roll and attack the boss, I actually felt fun, unlike the smaller easy monsters in the tutorial, the boss required some skill. Of course it wasn't too hard, it was definitely doable. This very same experience was horrid for me in dark souls but somehow ended up fun in this pixel drawn world. If you like dark souls, it's for you, if you like zelda, it's also for you. There's something about 2D games that makes things better, perhaps we're too used to 3D by now that going backwards is entertaining. Nevertheless this game accomplishes things other 2D games aren't even attempting, clever movement, the weapons are drawn with full 360 rotation unlike the common 4 direction frames. I only just started but it seems the basics are well done. The developer seems pretty enthusiastic and already patched every bug mentioned, gotta love indie developers that care.
I love this game! Old school co op RPG feel with cool action combat. Progression is fun. Levels are done really well. Challenging gameplay. Awesome bosses. Beautifule music. Very good game!

From this post I only have played for about an hours worth of this game single player. At first it's a little strange to play takes a little while to get use to the buttons (Remapped mine now) but as you play the game it sucks you in wanting more which is great. I really enjoy this game so far and recommend you at least give it a try! :D
Pretty easily takes the Souls play style to the 16-bit realm. Suffer a wee bit from control issues.
I am so so happy that gamepad support has been added. I take back any bad thing I ever said about this game. Bravo sir.
Not even an hour deep into playing this game. Already ripped a clump of hair from my head. 10/10
EPOCH is a fascinating game. It's one of the first RPGs I've ever played, and beaten. I got it several years ago back when literally nobody had heard of the game - which, let's be real here, that's *still* true even to this day. But that's a shame, because it really is a cool, mysterious, great game with intriguing story, few but endearing characters, wonderful pixelated graphics, and challenging fights all throughout, from Ry the Dark Warden 30 seconds in to
Rios the Creator
at the end. You can play as one of several different races, from the traditional dwarves, elves, and humans, to more original ones, such as the aquatic race of the Ghroulians or the mystical automatons called Cogsmen (I think that's what they're called? Idk it's been awhile since I played). Each race comes with a special ability that helps you out in some way throughout the game, though I'm gonna be honest, some abilities are straight-up better than others. For example, as a Ghroulian, you start the game with the ability to swim, which you would otherwise get around halfway-ish into the game. It nets you some cool stuff that you wouldn't get until later, but once you hit the point you'd normally get that power, it becomes obselete. What's not obselete, though, is the gameplay and story. The story is very mysterious, and you never really put the whole thing together. You can figure out most of it through item descriptions and character dialogue, and the final words of the now-deceased souls you collect on your adventure. The game is quite like Dark Souls in this and other ways, or so I've heard. It features many deities, ancient castles and other locations, temples, and other such things. Magic is quite prevalent, allowing you to use all sorts of runic spells to blast away your foes. Which brings me to combat, which is pretty cool. You get two hands, which you can use to either wield a pair of one-handed weapons or a single two-handed weapon. You can dodge-roll, parry, jump backwards, sprint, and do other fancy maneuvers. Combo these with powerful weapons and spells to get the edge on your enemies. The bosses are pretty hard, especially the ones not directly in your path (another Dark Souls trait). But I love the challenge, and have beaten every boss multiple times over. So yeah, love EPOCH, it's got awesome artwork, interesting story, good combat, all the stuff you could want out of an RPG. Lots of bugs, though, which is what makes me give it an 8.5/10 P.S. DON'T waste your time with the successor, Nother. It's super laggy, even on a decent computer, and the story makes NO sense. Graphics are bad too.
I would love to love this game. but first off its hard for a lot of parts. which doesnt neccessarily push me away as I like some good challenge. but then come the bugs, missing features and such. dont get me wrong, I am almost to the last area so i pushed through nonetheless. but just a few things to mention: shift is the key used for crowling. there are supposed to be "doge rolling" and (very late game) "diving" which both are supposed to use the shift key and therefor dont work. no matter how fast, slow, whatever you press shift, it's always crouching. dodge rolling and such simply dont exist in this game, despite the sign posts in the game. then there is a certain temple where you dirve around with railcars. the second railcar area has your railcar stop and you are supposed to autmatically transfer into other rail car situated there (or rather be thrown into them). well, collision detection might be the issue there but suddenly the railcar jsut stops at the end of it's tracks, putting you on top of a void spot. a slight move and the void captures you. I managed with some movement trickery to barely grasp the next car and jump in, but this section doesnt work as intended and is almost game breaking since you NEEED to pass this area. then the infinite hest inventory, which by itself is great. got 16 visible slots but can fit infinite items in. only issue: say you wanna get that certain key, or item out of the filled chest. well, you only see some random 16 of all items in there, so you gotta take out items over and over again until your desired item is shown. and by taking out, I mean: putting it into your inventory. which has also 16 slots but is NOT infinite! I think you see the issue there. and things like some scroll bar to look thorugh all the items in the chest jsut doesnt exist. then in general, lack of any tutorial. how does item forging work? how does this work, how does that work? why the hell cant I buy a sword (which has str+1, agi+1 by default, if I remeber correctly) and put on 3 new enchantments (by trial and error you learn that there can be max. 3 "effects" on a weapon. you also relaize that the initial str+1, agi+1 are hardcoded, so you cant replace them and therefor have only 2-1 effect remaining. putting on a new effect replaces the previous effect so building a custom weapon is impossible. well, none of these are ever explained though) you also got a left and right hand, aka left and right mosue button. remember reading that sign about it? me neither. ran around for quite a while with simply a sword while wondering how the fck the guy in the game guide can use sword and shield at once. there are some more things (although not game breaking, just annoying) that I cant remember right now. dont get me wrong, this game aint bad, it's a hard game that one can sure come to love depite it's difficulty. if jsut those issues that really arent gameplay issues but simply missing features and bad programming. stuff that the dev could easily fix. but if you follow the disussions and such it's obvious that he put out "patches" until 2016/2017, also did some thing in 2019 once. alwass doing some more minor or aesthetic fixes while for literally 6+ years totally ignoring the real BIG issues (mentioned above) that can soft lock you or downright make completing the game impossible. only my impresion but it feels like he doesnt give a sh and jsut fixes whatever he feels like,. ignoring the big issues. and obviously he has probably abandoned this game like 5 years, since he stopped responding to anything around 2017. oh yeah, 2 more weird things: you cant jump omn blue squares. the game never intends that you cant do it sicne there is literally a chest which you cant reach without jumping from a blue square. it's jsut ♥♥♥♥♥ programming making you unable to jump. dont ask me how he even accidentally achieved this but it sucks. had me doubt myself the first few times when I couldnt do simple jumps. but later seeing someone complain about this in the discussions, (of course no developer answer, never) so I deep tested it and yep, no jump on blue squares ever. also a thing: when on ice and you charge a bow shot, the character, ignoring all laws of momentum preservment and such, jsut slowly move towards the mouse. where you aim your charged ♥♥♥♥, character slide in that direction. obviously that is nonsense behaviour and shouldnt work that way. told you, sloppy programming/not fixing stuff mentioned many times/ignoring user complains and jsut doing whatever the fck you wanna do (for the most part, not fixing anything). So yeah, could be a good game, if the dev just some proper patdhes, not jsut fixing minor ♥♥♥♥ but rahter the few big issues. I dont even dare to buy the sequel nother sicne that seems abandoned since 2016/2017 too and I dont even wanna imagine what ugly bugs and game breaking things are in there. as said, I love the game for what it is, but the glitches and bugs can make (intentionally) hard game even much harder :-/
Great game. very fun mechanics for combat. very similar to dark souls. lots of secrets to find.
