With Enter Digiton, Morne is dipping his toes into the world of game development. Is it a good Metroidvania? Are the boss battles challenging and fair? How hard can a shield hit? And why does the mean computer want Ahab to harm a bunny? Perhaps too many questions for an intro?
Move along! Nothing to see here
Demon lords have taken over the world, a lonely shield is missing its master, and the only one who can save Digiton is you – Ahab, a mute hero who likes bunnies. Will you be up to the task? That’s about it, apart from meeting new friends along the way, the story is mostly an afterthought here, but I do have to give props to the humour. Even if subjective, it did give me a few chuckles at times and never felt forced. The story does end on a cliffhanger, and the developer promises DLC with new bosses. So we might yet see a more thought out story with more world-building and interesting characters.
Rise of the Shield Hero
Armed with only a tiny shield, even the Doomguy would tip his fedora your way as you set off to purge the world of the demon lords presence. Your trusty shield has two uses – killing and deflecting. While primarily used to stun enemies in the 1.0 version of the game, the update Heart of Corruption did change a few things and you can now kill certain enemies. It usually takes about 4 hits to kill a single enemy. I don’t like this, but it seems some people didn't get a memo that the point was to take that option of clearing your path away before you do the platforming. I liked it more when your shield was just there for deflecting attacks and stunning enemies for a short time. But now it feels like a regular sword. A real shame. Most enemies are simple close-quarter mobs. But on the odd occasion, a ranged enemy will appear. Their projectiles relentlessly follow you, so either deflect them or manoeuvre them into a wall. Do note that Ahab will keep his shield up for a second or two when you hit the button to deflect, and there is a cooldown for this, so time it right or you will get damaged. The boss battles were good, offering a decent challenge, with each having a different playstyle you need to adapt to and a specific way of damaging them. There are also corrupted versions of each boss, presenting a tougher challenge. Not Belzaboul tho. He is very, very, easy. He can’t comprehend you simply standing beneath him and hitting him with the shield. As you clap those demon lords cheeks, Ahab receives new abilities that aid him in his final battle and make platforming much more forgiving. The first one you learn by default is shadow step, and you will be using this a lot, be it for combat or platforming. It does have a cooldown, so you can’t abuse it. The other abilities are dropped by the bosses – double jump, teleport and bubble. With the teleport ability, you won’t teleport short distances at will. Instead, you interact with teleports scattered throughout each level by throwing your shield at them. They are mostly used for getting to secret areas. Double jump is pretty self-explanatory, and lastly we have the bubble. This is the most useful of the three. It encapsulates Ahab and makes him float upwards for a few seconds, helping you regain your lost progress quickly if you happen to fall. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2221544932 Aside from these abilities, there are also masks scattered through each level you can collect. They add certain boosts and penalties to your health, movement speed, shadow step cooldown, etc. More powerful versions of these masks will cost primordial souls, which can be found by exploring every nook and cranny, with some being tucked away in areas only accessible with certain upgrades. When you are not fighting bosses or running away from enemies, you'll be avoiding the pointy sticks while platforming. They result in instant death, so be careful how high you jump at times. The other nuisances are the enemies. They roam the world or simply fire homing projectiles at you, and of course - rotating chainsaws, because why not. They won’t instantly kill you, but instead, they take one health point. You do get a short immortal period for about two seconds or so. While on the topic of health, each time you pass a checkpoint, you fully recover your health. And the last part of the gameplay - control feel. Very good. Very good, indeed. They felt responsive, and the only thing that can cause some frustration is the direction of the shadow step at times, as movement is tied to the thumbstick and those playing on the d-pad might scream in agony. One area I was pleasantly surprised was how the game handles directing the player where to go. It just lets you go anywhere you want. This is a double-edged sword; More freedom to choose your path, but it also means some platforming segments are much harder as you lack a certain ability.
No, mom, please! Not another serving of pixel graphics! I'll eat all of my vegetables! I promise
By the header, one may think I dislike the games art style. Well, I don’t. I just couldn't think of any meme, joke or even something serious to put there that would show my fondness for what Enter Digiton achieves. So I just decided to meme the extreme presence of pixel graphics in the indie scene. Now that I explained my header, we can get back to me praising the art style. I recently saw a dev talk about how to make your game stand out, catching the eyes of potential buyers. While finding something appealing is subjective, Enter Digiton immediately grabbed my attention with its simplistic, and yet very detailed environments, each having different enemy designs, architecture and all of it is coated in specific colours. By far my favourite area was The Deep, where darkness reigns supreme, and you need to collect light sources so you can shine brighter and see farther. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2221343986 The background music is decent, with each world having a different one. The SFX are great, especially the dash and enemy deaths on the sharp spikes. They also play a crucial role in combat, alerting the player to potential threats or incoming attacks. This is especially important during boss battles for telegraphing their incoming attacks.
Final Thoughts
If you arent bothered by forgettable stories and short runtime, give Enter Digiton a chance to win you over with its unique gameplay. I hope we see more from Morne and he continues to expand the world of Digition in the upcoming free DLC updates. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2221813138
If you enjoy this review, come and read more wisdom from the Gospel of Sv.
Good things come in threes
If you found yourself interested in Enter Digiton, you're either a pixel addict, a metroidvania fan or a lover of weird color palettes. There is a big chance that you won't be disappointed - and I'll tell you why.
When Mega Man entered Silent Hill
I do think that it is pretty fair to say that Enter Digiton took some heavy influences from the aformentioned Game Boy-hero and cult mascot, although not storywise. You're AHAB, an artificially created unit which falls down into the underground world of Digiton after failing a very certain test that is quite the opposite of petting a rabbit. Whilst Mega Man deals with some incompetent robot antagonists, you'll face the sprouts of demon entities, fight their monsters and, at last, the masters themselves. As far as lore and story goes, there is not much else to tell, besides some small chunks of written bits, explaining your surroundings or trying to make a bit more sense of that vile and vicious world you're traversing. If you're lucky, you'll also have a good laugh. There is a companion that won't aid in your fight but has some advices and special thoughts in certain situations. The core gameplay itself feels much more like an old school metroidvania. Jump, dash, die and repeat, as long as you're willing to keep going. You'll always start from the latest checkpoint which also refills your health upon reach. The movement feels on point when playing with a 360 gamepad. Combat is pretty special though. Unlike many other games, you'll solely rely on a shield instead of a mighty gun or a sword. That is not to say you're not able to attack. AHAB throws his shield in every direction you're pointing to and deals a set amount of damage. Most of the enemies only need a couple of hits before going down; bosses tend to eat a lot more damage. Since it is a shield, you're also able to block incoming projectiles. AHAB takes up the shield for a second and returns the object to where it came from. However, there is a small timer on this so if you're timing is off, you'll take a hit and lose health. Personally I found it quite enjoyable and satisfying but it can get tough in between platforming passages. Speaking of the latter, I might add that Enter Digition is special in the sense that the world is semi-open. You can explore everything right from the start, with the exception of the last biome of Digiton. If you want to take a look into the deep abyss - go for it. But be aware that it might end in a somewhat frustrating experience. It took me 20 minutes to realize that I was only dying ever so often in a particular jumping passage because I was still missing a certain abilty. So, take my advice and stick to the mines at the start. Right off the bat you're able to do a dash which does exactly what you think it does - move into one direction at a very fast speed. To learn every other ability that AHAB can master, you must beat the bosses of Digiton. Since I beat the boss of the mines at first, I got the double jump which should tell you why I was able to finally bypass that frustrating jumping passage afterwards. The idea of gaining new abilites after beating certain bosses is not unique but it serves the gameplay well and makes you feel exponentially more powerful. I'm not exactly a pro when it comes down to metroidvanias but I do enjoy roguelikes and challenges. Dying very often is not making me turn away from a game. That said, the bossfights always felt like a spike in difficulty. Others might laugh at me, breezing through the game but I can at least say that winning requires the mastery of your movements and knowledge of a certain pattern. In the end, I do still think that nothing in the game was as frustrating as that one passage I needed the double jump for. Sorry that I had to ride that horse again. The other abilites are very useful as well and help in opening up hidden passages to explore which you otherwise couldn't reach. I won't spoil too much but I can say that you'll backtrack and visit rooms you've been before just to reach certain elements. This feels more like it's taken out of Castlevania. Personally, I like it a lot. Backtracking is a chore but you get a map from the start and there are some portals which do help in traversing at least a little bit faster.
Why are you wearing a mask?
Besides everything mentioned above, there is the option to wear a mask. Not only one but a small amount of different pieces to put on your face. They do offer bonuses but at the cost of reducing something else. You'll find a mask that gives you one more health but reduces you're running speed. Another one increases your dash range but ramps up the cooldown for said ability. Most of the masks can either be found through exploring or just keeping to the main story. There are some powerful versions which alter the bonus and reduction ratio even more like getting two more health but greatly reducing the speed. These often come at the price of primordial souls. These can be found throughout the game. I must admit that I always tried the new masks but in the end kept my face clean just to not get any of the disadvantages. Still, it can alter your playstyle and therefore the whole gameplay.
Unto the end
I can't let this review pass without mentioning what makes Enter Digiton really shine and made me wishlist this game in the first place: the art. There is this weird mixture of pixel-art, monochrome colors and unique, sometimes a bit offsetting enemy design. Each section or biome of Digiton looks vastly different when compared to the others. There is just something that draws you closer to the location, making you want to solve the small mysteries the game has to offer. The boss design didn't impress me at first but then I played against one of the corrupted boss versions. The latter were added in a free mini-dlc, offering three new challenges besides some quality of life improvements. There I felt the symbiosis of Mega Man and Silent Hill again and really have to give Kudos to Morne Venter, the single dev of Enter Digiton. Also, I do love the sound design and different music styles for each zone. The abyss does really feel like a deep and dark world whilst the mines do look toxic but, in a way, quite normal. So, to conclude my last thoughts, I'd highly recommend playing Enter Digiton if you're a fan of metroidvanias and well-made indie games in general. I must admit that the playtime won't hit the two digit count unless you're dying very often and really take your time in exploring everything. That said, for the price asked there is in fact a lot to explore and unfold. Moments of frustration will happen as sure as those of satisfaction and I can't stress enough how good of an idea it is to get the double jump first! I did really enjoy my time playing and look forward to finishing my small journey to unfold AHABs final secrets and I urge you to do the same.

Visuals great UI great Mechanics great World/level design, platforming, exploration....................Atrociously bad. The game world is massive but so ****ing bland and empty and repetitive. The 1 boss (moon girl up in space) I fought was okay, but not amazing enough to make up for the incredibly bland 50 minutes it took to get there. The game starts off very strong just because of how good it looks and feels, but after about 10 minutes of exploring the world I was thinking "wow this feels really kind of empty, but maybe it's just the intro and it will get better". 1 hour later "wow this is really what the whole game is like lol" You shouldn't design a giant world if you aren't willing to put in the effort to fill it with interesting things. Game would have been much better off if the "stages" leading up to the boss fights were significantly smaller. Like 80% of the map area can be cut without losing any interesting gameplay, that is how empty and repetitive the world feels.
I really enjoyed my experience with this game. The pixel art looks great and platforming is very smooth. There are some tough areas (the dark one) and some really tough bosses. All-in-all it was a wholesome experience! Pros: - Smooth platforming. - Interesting world. - Funny fat cat. - Great art. - Simple controls. - I like throwing the shield. Cons: - Hard at times. - Two color scheme makes some things hard to see.

I got this game on sale for less than 1€ and I'm not sure if it's even worth that much. I wanted to get at least halfway through before posting a review despite noticing many of the issues I'm about to point out almost immediately, but after half a dozen deaths on the very first boss, I can't be bothered. The first and biggest problem is the total lack of control customization (or any kind of options menu at all, really). If you have a QWERTZ keyboard setup, the game is unplayable, as the block button (Z) is miles away from the rest of your controls. If you press and hold 3 keys at the same time, your controls will lock up, so if you want to jump and dash diagonally, if you hold the spacebar for too long, the dash just won't activate. The up arrow is used for interacting with NPCs as well as advancing the dialogue, so if you try to skip through, you end up opening the dialogue box again. The range of the interaction is massive, so if you try to dash or attack up anywhere near them, you'll open up the dialogue when you didn't want to. Regular enemies follow very basic movement patterns and seemingly serve no other purpose than to be a minor inconvenience on your way. They also have no hit confirmation, making whether you hit them or not a total guessing game. Enemy projectiles track to an insane degree, which makes the aforementioned inaccessible block a requirement to get through certain areas. The environment is drab and the only major difference in locations besides the enemies is the single color used per area. Every single platform in the game has a curved end so you can jump onto the edge of a platform only to inexplicably slide off. The last update by the dev was about a year ago and he doesn't seem active on social media, so I highly doubt any of these issues will be fixed anytime soon.
Spent 20 minutes going through the world with no idea where I'm going or what I'm doing. Eventually ended up at a point that I couldn't pass because it was packed full of spikes, but to go back would take forever. I exited out to the main menu and it said I was 14% done with the game...
