―― The nameless girl becomes you, and you become the nameless girl.

Absented Age is a fresh mix of genres: an action RPG outside of combat that becomes a roguelike-style strategy RPG during combat.
If you touch a foe, get an advance attack in, or get jumped yourself, you'll transition directly to turn-based combat, with any surrounding enemies joining the fray.

Dodge and weave through a flurry of hundreds of unique skills and items, and take down formidable monsters while dressing up your characters in a variety of outfits!
The interactive music performed by the protagonists' Tea Ceremony Band Club adds even more immersion to the story.
★This game is the sequel to the previous title, Squarebound, and allows you to carry over your save data from the original.
The acclaimed tutorial returns in this installment as well, so even first-time players should feel at ease.

In this outing, making strategic use of Assist Summons, which let you call upon friends you've bonded with throughout the story to fight alongside you, and Change Summons, which allow you to temporarily switch characters to overcome difficult situations, will be key to your success.

Master advanced techniques that transcend genres — such as semi-charged attacks, counters, perfect guards, and directional influence: show off your very own ultimate, stylish gameplay.
You are free to share or stream gameplay of this title as long as you follow the separately provided guidelines.

Having lost both your memories and physical form, you awaken as a ghostly girl in the mysterious alternate world of memories known as the "Forbidden Domain."
Together with the spirit Tart whom you meet there, you begin gathering fragments of your memory — only to discover that you were once a trumpet player named Karen, who dreamed of performing at Chōrakusai, this summer's major music festival.
You also learn that, even now, despite rumors of your death spreading through the world, your bandmates are desperately continuing their search for you.

After fierce battles with the mysterious anomalies known as Gängers (beings that prey upon the heart in both the city and the Forbidden Domain) you manage to reclaim half of the lost fragments of your heart.
With the aid of Yayoi, a spirit wielder from the secretive Elysio Church, you gain a means to manifest in the real world once more—imperfect, yet tangible.
And so, the stage shifts to a school where many of Karen’s memories lie waiting.
But there, in the depths of the sea of memory, another anomaly awaits. One that holds the key to your past...

◆Cooperation with Allies
From Hayato, who turns difficult situations into opportunities with powerful counterattack skills, to Suzu, who excels at siege-style combat centered around autonomous deployable turrets...
The bonds you've formed with your allies throughout the story manifest within the Forbidden Domain via spirit stones, lending you powerful support on your journey.
The field actions available to you during exploration and action gameplay depends on the equipped spirit stones, greatly expanding your strategic options.

Use spirit arts to instantly switch the combat style of your partner, the spirit Tart.
Take advantage of the newly added skill tree to enhance your strengths with skills such as follow-up attacks and automatic healing.

◆Extensive Equipment and Outfit Customization
Lots of new equipment with original illustrations.
As in the previous title, this game features a massive variety of abnormal status effect variations and equipment slots for lots of customization.
Each time you obtain a previously acquired piece of equipment, its proficiency level increases.
This proficiency is retained even if the item is lost, so feel free to try out new combinations without worry and enjoy customizing your appearance.

[後半に日本語レビューあり]
Addictive roguelite x SRPG sequel with seamless connection between action and strategy
A sequel that further refines the two-layer structure that was the hallmark of the previous game: ARPG exploration that seamlessly transitions into grid-based SRPG battles upon contact. In the field, you maneuver with a variety of actions determined by spirit stones, and once in battle, high-strategy combat unfolds, making use of counters, just guards, and positioning. In combat, two types of summoning expand tactical options: Assist Summon to call allies and Change Summon to temporarily switch characters and alter the situation, functioning as means to turn the tide when at a disadvantage. Equipment is lost upon defeat, but mastery levels continue to accumulate, so reobtaining them results in further strengthening—creating a “positive loss” feeling. Customization is extensive, including new outfits, weapon variants, and spirit stones that influence builds. The adaptive BGM by the in-game “Tea Ceremony Band Club” connects exploration, combat, and menu operations without interruption, enhancing immersion. The story, as the “Ghostbound” chapter, shifts the stage from the forbidden lands to a school, where a former ghost girl who has gained a body becomes involved in a mix of urban legend mystery, musical dreams, and supernatural battles. Save data from the previous game can be carried over for special bonuses, making it a highly satisfying “dense roguelike SRPG” for both series veterans and newcomers. With high-quality anime artwork (officially noted as “mild sexual content at shōnen magazine level; can be filtered in settings”) and equally high-quality gameplay, it is a well-crafted title. Considering its content, the price is very reasonable, and it is a work well worth experiencing alongside its predecessor.
Check out our Steam curator , YouTube channel and X(Twitter)!

Information / Review English
[English] AbsentedAge 2: Ghostbound falls into the strategy/action role-playing game genre, developed by terunon's Lab.
Gameplay / Story
Are we dead or alive? That's the question we ask ourselves when we open our eyes. We have no memory of what was and what happened to us. The world we knew no longer exists, and we are trapped in a parallel world called the "Forbidden Domain." Our goal is to collect fragments of memory in order to access and regain our memories. This way, we discover what our function was in real life and what our calling was. Visually, the game is kept simple, with simple pixel art environments and straightforward character sprites that reflect its RPG Maker roots. Despite these limitations, the graphics manage to convey a subtle charm, especially in more surreal or emotionally intense scenes. The sound design is minimalist, with subtle background music that sometimes enhances the mood and sometimes fades into the background. The lack of elaborate effects or animations brings dialogue and pacing to the fore, making the quality of the text crucial to the gaming experience.
Pros
+ Deep story + Various gear with original illustrations + Exciting and tactical battles + Appropriate background music + Simple controls + Good value for money
Cons
- Only a few languages available
Conclusion
AbsentedAge 2: Ghostbound offers a fresh genre mix that combines multiple elements and delivers a great gaming experience.
First of all, many thanks to the developer for providing us with this key for the group. You can find more positive reviews from others and me here, and if you liked the review, we would appreciate a thumbs up.

Information / Review Deutsch
Absented Age 2 Ghostbound is undeniably an absolute masterpiece in my eyes, and in my opinion, it’s one of the greatest games I’ve played. It’s personally my top favorite game right now, and will likely stay that way for a long time. I was hoping to write this review sooner within the first month it came out (Aug 4th, 2025), but I got caught up in life, and didn’t want to write something without beating the game first (funny too, I was so close to the end when life caught up to me, could’ve beaten it (;-▵-)). If you haven’t played the first game, I would stop here and look into playing that one, Absented Age: Squarebound International. I left a big review on that one too and while I won’t do any big spoilers for AA2, there might be things in AA1 that I tread over for comparison sake. I’m attempting to explain things to expect that can help people understand what they’re getting into, or what’s new that makes it more expansive on the first game. That way people can understand a bit more what’s going on and why it’s so good before making a purchase…. Okay, so if you don’t know, Absented Age is a top down roguelike game with smooth action rpg movement outside of combat that transitions very smoothly into a grid-based strategy RPG style the moment you hit combat. You control Karen, and fight alongside your awesome cat companion Tarte, who’s controlled by AI and works with you to combo moves and defeat enemies. You get a skill set with multiple skills to perform (Tarte gets his own too), always having your core moves, your weapon, ring and gem each give you 1-4 skills to wield in battle. This hasn’t changed from the first game, what has is that the sequel expands upon the limitations of each item only containing those specific skills by giving you the ability to transfer abilities between weapons and rings of the same type (weapon to weapon, ring to ring, sorry gems). On top of this, while most of AA1’s skills mostly amounted to projectile attack with x element, AA2 breathes more interesting ideas into each skill, which makes customization breed more combo potential. The game also introduces more consumable items that should change up the game more….if you remember to use them (;>▿>). I forgot about the consumables most of the time, but to be fair, they’re very useful, and change things up a lot, definitely would’ve made my battles easier had I remembered. Maybe if Tarte was able to throw them at me/use them, maybe then they would’ve come in more, as he wouldn’t forget cause he’s an AI. Summontones are the biggest gameplay element of the game. Summonstones give you a new character to play with, and the ability to summon them as a third member or swap out Karen and play as them for a limited time. Summonstone members are completely different characters, and have their own playstyle and skill set. A bit of advice, swapping to a summon doesn’t carry over Karen’s buffs or debuffs, so if you’re cornered and are toppled or something, changing to someone else is very ideal, and equipping them in your inventory doesn’t take a turn, which is very important. The story really shines here, it’s probably the biggest factor of the game. In AA1, there are a lot of unanswered questions that get kinda glazed over, but now that I completed AA2, I can see that it just simply wasn’t the right timing in AA1, and everything comes in. I have little to no questions or confusions about the game's story at all now that I beat AA2. I don’t want to spoil anything, which makes it hard to talk about the story, but seriously, the writing is kinda crazy, the game brings in more jokes and funny moments than the last game too (mainly thanks to the expanded cast), but never forgets when to get tense and serious. Just keep in mind everything does line up, and while I was really focused on finding them, it’s very easy to miss information that could easily line up a bunch of different questions. I’d love to see what web of a corkboard the developer Terunon has! The music is phenomenal, both games have some really incredible songs, it’s 100% worth a listen. I recommend buying the soundtrack, though personally I preferred experiencing them in game before using the soundtrack. I suppose it makes sense that the music better be good considering the story, but still. The only things I’ve noticed about the music is that both game’s soundtracks are still missing a song or two, notably the song "Everything Has an End", and being a game with such great music, even a song or two is something to harp on for me. If I have any big problems I have with the game, it’s that the storage unit in the game wasn’t upgraded, and the skill set UI doesn’t show enough. To elaborate, AA1 has a storage unit in the game that you can upgrade to add more space via the skill tree, it caps out at 120 spaces, but even in AA1, I don’t feel like this is enough, it was more acceptable then, but was still too limiting, which I do understand why. However, AA2 adds to the skill tree, and you can pass on your data from AA1 over to AA2, keeping what you unlocked on the skill tree the same. But while adding to the skill tree, they never added more storage upgrades, which thematically makes sense yes, but causing a big problem because AA2 has sooo much more to give out. When it comes to wanting to transfer skills to equipment, make backup items, and also wanting to collect favorites of AA2’s stuff as well as the old AA1 stuff you can still obtain, 120 slots simply isn’t nearly enough anymore, and became a real problem extremely fast. The other problem, the skill set UI. In the game, the skill set has 3 columns, displaying 6 skills each, the first 2 columns display the skills you use and interchange in the game, while the third displays Tarte tactics and summonstone stuff, we’ll ignore the third column for now, it’s not the problem. This was fine in AA1 cause the equipment gave you 1-2 skills usually, making enough space for all the core skills of Karen + the equipment skills. AA2 makes this a problem because the game is always limited to 2 columns, even though you now have the ability to add skills to weapons and rings. The extra skills that don’t fit in the 12 slots are tucked away in the skill menu. It’s not that hard to get to that menu or anything, but any average player is not going to remember that they have these extra skills. I know I forgot often, and it’s mainly a problem to me because I really don’t think it could’ve been that hard to add like, two more columns to the game, right?? With how many times you’ll fight in this game, it can become tiresome and frustrating. I really want to customize equipment (despite my indecisiveness), but when you need to choose what’s on stage and what’s in the back, it hurts my decision making when customizing equipment purely because I know I’ll forget eventually. It’s not a problem for Tarte cause he’s an AI, but again, you’ll fight sooo many battles that you’ll be (ghost)bound to forget. Also, I know it messes with two settings options format-wise, but I still think this should’ve been accounted for, surely this couldn’t have been that hard to fix. Either way, I cannot express how much I love this game. I wish it wasn’t so small of an indie game, this game needs to reach a wider audience! I really like every part about this game, most of all the story, which is really inspiring and eye opening. If I spoke Japanese, I’d probably reach out more through their Discord or such just to talk about it to them (not that I can’t cause translators, but it’s awkward being likely one of the only English speakers in there either way). My sibling jokingly calls me the number one English speaking Absented Age fan, and they’re right XD. I cannot wait to see what Terunon makes next! To whoever’s reading this, I hope this is your cup of tea, and I really hope you enjoy it!!
Absented Aged Like Wine
Review for the previous game: https://steamcommunity.com/id/bugfragged/recommended/1615930?snr=1_5_9__402
Story
This game is a continuation of Absented Age: Squarebound, where Karen must gather her Heart Fragments in order to restore her memories and identity, even though she is uncertain that she can truly match up to her old self. The game also gives character arcs to Karen's friends and even enemies, who share her struggle to fit into a conformist society where everyone is expected to act a certain way, and where clout determine's society's definition of right and wrong. It should also be noted that while Karen and Hayato are shown to be taking music more seriously than Rumi, there is some additional nuance added to this conflict.
Karen ended up destroying her immune system due to neglecting her health at the expense of music practice while Rumi is dealing with trauma from an abusive "victory at all costs" club advisor from her previous school. Finally, the main villain is a dark reflection of both Karen and Rumi, since she was once a victim of an unreasonable society that refused to listen to her, while also using force to impose her views of right and wrong on others once she gave up on trying to convince people
. Overall, I like how the sequel expands on the themes of the first game and provides more context for the characters' worldviews.
Gameplay
The mechanics are mostly the same, though there are various changes that makes the game overall easier than the previous one if you're not deliberately increasing the danger level via bells. * In the previous game, Summonstones can only be used in a single arcade dungeon and the postgame infinite dungeon. In this game, you can use Summonstones in story dungeons, which makes it much easier to deal with Monster Houses and tough bosses, while also giving Karen more ranged options in action mode. The bosses are slightly mechanically harder to compensate, but having Summonstones more than outweights that. Assist Summon is generally stronger than Change Summon, but the dev did make some incentives to use the latter, such as Change Summon exclusive skills and the postgame dungeon's unique mechanic. * You can spend DP inside Coupe's shop, which has randomized consumables and equipment. This gives you more opportunities to max out certain pieces of equipment and stock up on essential items like Scores of Decadence in preparation for tough bosses. * Level Tonics were only usable in arcade dungeons in Squarebound. Now they can be used in this game's story dungeons, which means you can use them before marking a warp gate, allowing you to outlevel a boss if you're having too much trouble with them. * You can now break chaos orbs to prevent large monster houses. * There are rings that have spells that don't require you to be perfectly aligned with the enemy. To compensate, many enemies also have those spells or other skills that can hit you while misaligned. * You can transfer skills from one piece of equipment to another, giving you more versatility. This also makes arcade dungeons slightly easier, since they won't let you bring in spare equipment, so you'll need all the versatility you can get on your currently equipped gear. * Sho's Summonstone can cheese a lot of puzzles, lol. At the same time, there are some new gimmicks and traps to watch out for, such as a book that takes away the attacker's MP, a mushroom ailment that grows into a mini-Karen (not making this up), a pumpkin bomb that damages both friends and foes, AOE coconuts, claymore fire hydrants (regular water hydrants still exist, so don't mix them up), chest mimics, invisible jellyfish, monster spawning traps, electric circuits, glass walls that selectively block attacks, turrets that shoot projectiles at 90 degree mirrors, and hockey pucks. As for the Summonstones characters, each of them has their own playstyle that requires you to either use equipment skills to make up for their weaknesses or learn how to optimally use their native abilities, and you have to beat their arcade stages to unlock all their abilities. There is a clear hierarchy on who is the most useful, especially when some characters have more stat nodes in their skill trees than others. I personally find that Mika is the best one due to her survivability and counterattacks, to the point where I consider her easier to use than
Alter Karen
. For those carrying over saves, you might be shocked that you can't access your old gear despite the mastery carrying over. It actually doesn't matter too much, since the gear in the first dungeon caps higher than the previous game's gear anyways. This ensures that even for a player who jumped into the sequel, they still have a decent chance of winning the game, though I would still highly recommend playing the first. As for your skill tree, your DP is reset to 0, but you keep all of your skill tree nodes, ensuring Karen and Tarte start the game with high base stats. If you beat Squarebound's superboss, you reobtain Death and Broody in the postgame, but by then, it's not the strongest weapon around, though it's still pretty decent for some Summonstone characters. However, I am annoyed that the save carryover doesn't immediately give you Astrake and Iris's Summonstones, since you need to manually copy a patch file for that. I think there should have been an in-game hint for that, and I only learned about it through the dev's Discord. International Summonstones: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3566081089 Outside of combat, more of Amefuribashi is explorable, giving more life to the town outside of just the square. This also includes the school, where Karen's clothes change depending on which area she's in. You also get to travel on the train despite how you already have quick travel, which is more of a flavor thing than an essential feature. You can tell there's a decent amount of thought put into making the town feel like a town and not just an RPG Maker map.
Other
* The pacing of the story arcs is different, since Driftworlds in the previous game have two corridor and one core dungeons, while the Driftworlds in this game have one corridor and one core. There are story moments in the hollow "checkpoint" areas in the middle of each dungeon in additional to the usual Memorial Keys and Grand Boss cutscenes, and I feel like this pacing is overall better than the previous game. * I wish there was a followup cutscene for completing the Crossing, Park, and Fountain Driftworlds, since this is apparently related to the church and it would create an opportunity to characterize Yuna, Yukihime, and Lycoris. * Lost Memoria seems to be a reference to Alias Ache, but there is no English version of that game. I'm curious how important that older game is to this game's story. * Akane states that she accidentally fell into a Driftworld on the day Karen left the Brass Band Club, which seems to be a reference to another untranslated game, Acted Acres.
Verdict
9.7/10 There is much more meat to the story than the previous game and it adds more nuance to the themes that were previously introduced. Though I worry that my lack of knowledge about the untranslated AA games means I'm missing some context. Gameplay-wise, this builds on the action/turn-based hybrid system by giving the player Summonstones, which gives the player more options to deal with the duology's tougher mechanics like Monster Houses, while also bridging the gap between the roguelite system and more traditional party-based games. Most of all, the game does a great job of blending story events into scripted battle events, where Karen's friends gain the resolve to face their problems while granting their Summonstone to her, creating anime-like hype moments that a lot of other games struggle to capture.
I'd been waiting for this to come out in English and I'm really happy it has. At its core this is a Shiren-style dungeon crawler, but with a lot of techniques that involve movement - rushing in to attack something, stunning it, then backflipping back out of range and charging a big fireball is the most basic ass combo in the game and it still feels great because the effects are good and everything halts as over the top towers of flame erupt across the map. But then the boss might jump out of the combat arena and start pelting it with missiles, which you have to dodge in real-time while you figure out how to blast it out of the sky, hit it while it's recovering, or how best to use debris around the battlefield to try to interrupt and damage it. The rest of the time it's a visual novel about a girl who wakes up as a ghost with no idea what happened to her or why, trying to remember who she even is and why she might have ended up in this situation. Anyway it's great, translation's very good, the first game is also on Steam.
Since my translations were almost exactly spot on, I will paste the original review here with some new details. Extremely good game. Story: Picks up after the previous one and dives into the theme of existence. The previous game was more about imitation vs reality, and while this one is the same in that matter. It also goes into the meaning to exist in short. Each of the character stories were very well made. Such as Hayato's use of drugs, Akane's desire for things to return to the way it was. As well as Karen's desire to pass on her dream. This game hits like a train around every end. It is very emotionally heavy like the first game, and will pull away the strings every step of the way. And the twist near the end, it will make sense when you connect the dots. Though, when you find out about Karen, it will be quite the experience. Since there is also another heavy hitting scene, that really develops their character. As to not spoil further here is some of the stories. Suzu: A person unable to face society as herself due to pressure, she carries two sides to her. Akane: A more carefree all or nothing person, that wants things to go back to the way it was. However, despite her struggles, she will not try and hinder Karen, even though they wre great friends. System: A much more expansive system, with a larger skill tree pool. On top of the usual enchantments, you get summon stones which can do switch ins to characters, or summon them for the battle. These expand the strategy to use. On top of this, there is equip inheritance to pass on skills amongst other additions. From there add what was in the first game onto this, since that is there. Elemental affinity as well has more weight in this game too. Also, they fixed that issue where you need to equip bottom before your top. In the previous game, this cause some very unfair situations. Now, you can equip in whatever order. it is a semi-turn based mystery dungeon game involving both real time and turn based actions. As a reminder, the game acts as a mystery dungeon kind of game. You are expected to make use of your environment, skills, etc. Boss fights are first real time, and then transitions into turn based once you collide into them after breaking their shields. The second game's system is very improved, and the balance is far better than the first. So, I can see they learned quite a bit from the first game. Music: Amazing. Art Style: Amazing. Overall: An extremely good game all around, as a last note. Go to the cafe in the post game, talk to the guy and show him an Arc stone and you will get an artificial spirit stone. This will in short restore your Altered Form. Everything else should check out exactly.
