Reviews
If you enjoyed space engineers but felt like it was an endless grind to a storyless game, Empyrion is your game. Hands down the best space builder I've played yet!
Doesn't hold up well in 2026, in terms of either graphics or gameplay.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

I really want to like this game but I just can't The major issue is the performance that is really awful compared to other games. I had this game in my inventory and was interested again but the as previous said performance issues was just too much to handle. Additionally the UI feels very low fidelity and outdated. The concept of the game is what I love. It might not be the most unique but still good for an interesting gameplay loop.
This game has gone through lots of phases and changes. The devs do great work and a lot of the past was not perfect, but they listen to their community and fix the issues when they arise. After a few years of seeing how the devs work I can say they try to listen as much as possible. The game is not perfect as bugs still creep up at times but it is an open space sandbox block game on unity engine after all. I can say with my experiance that the game is worth playing. The hard part is learning the way the mechanices work. I would start with singleplayer tutorial to learn before multiplayer and disabling cpu and weight/volume if its too hard to play with. Regardless the game can be played in any way you like and see fit to your preference even getting workshop scenarios and blueprints others have created for you to spawn in when you get the materials. So yes its a great game with a lot of history, I recommend it.
Game seriously degraded lately. Multiplayer lags like hell, totally unplayable.
I like this one over Starfield and No Man's Sky for a couple of reasons. First, I think the scope is right. You kinda have to work for your gear and survival, and the baseline systems are a little more detailed and less wonky. Second, No Man's sky is too intertwined, pairing seamlessness with boring simplicity, and Starfield is too damn broad, with basically a low-quality flying mini game rather than what feels like earning your way into space paired with Skyrim-in-space FPS/RPG elements. This is clearly not meant to beat the AAA competitors at what they do, but to me, it does what it set out to do better. There are some drawbacks. The environment looks great, but the visuals can't compare to the big money renderings. The missions are sort of thrown together, and the vehicle and space combat has all the complexity of Descent. The ground combat reminds me of Quake 1. And there is a learning curve (a clunky but detailed tutorial set me straight after about a half hour though). Bottom line is, this game is indy so don't expect the Rembrandt quality Bethesda can offer. But again, if you're as disillusioned by the AAA offerings of late, in my opinion, this is one game that will give you what you really wanted. I prob will play this for a long time; I doubt I'll ever make it back to Starfield.
I've put tons of hours into this game and no doubt I will continue to do so, so it's time I gave my support for this gem.
TL DR:
Fantastic space sandbox with a deep building system (less complex than Space Engineers, more complex than Avorion, i would rate). Marred by lots of rough edges and jank, but an immensely satisfying game to build in. Has plenty of content to interact with (tons of POIs, ships, planet types, etc) to slam your builds against. Blueprint system allows you to save your builds, carry them over to games, build more copies of the same creation in the same game, or download builds from the workshop.
Now, in more depth:
First, right off the top, while Vanilla is solid and has merits, I strongly recommend using the overhaul mod Reforged Eden 2 for a vast increase in mechanics, intelligent rebalancing, and a huge increase in content in general. Very easy to subscribe in the Workshop. The game features four types of builds - Bases, Hover Vessels, Small Vessels, and Capital Vessels. Empyrion's sandbox is less immersion focused (IE, Elite's obsession with representing true distances) and more player interaction focused. Celestial bodies, day night cycles, other elements are stiff and more window dressing than simulation. Voxel digging, block placements, light survival management (oxygen, status effects, radiation) and other standard fare for survival games are all present. Factions and reputation scores are also in. Multi-player is fantastic in Empyrion, because multiple vessels and players really opens up a lot of strategic options for attacking POIs or enemy ships. There are pretty healthy servers out there too, if looking for a more open experience. I have a very fond memory of a failed dropship attack on a barren moon, where I was in the middle of giving out a joking drill sergeant esque speech when suddenly we were smacked out of the air, and scrambled out of the ship, wiping basically immediately. Progression in Vanilla is satisfying, but really shines in RE2. Ships have a solid balance, and I have personally created many vessels to solve specific problems, rather than make one Swiss army knife ship to do everything perfectly. Performance on an old rig might struggle a bit when there's a huge build or multiple builds up on screen. Graphics are dated, some models are very strange choices and look like purchased assets. Loading screens aren't bad. Jumping to a sector is quick, entering a planet's atmosphere then has a super fast loading sequence, but otherwise it's not distractingly often.
How jank are we talking?
Let me throw examples out to let you decide if you can stomach the jank. The big one - you can't stand up from a ship in motion or walk about in it. As mentioned, celestial bodies misbehave and act strangely. AI is poor (but does improve with RE2). Planet generation sometimes has strange behavior. Quests can be buggy. Things of this nature.
Closing
I've said plenty, but to reiterate, I continue to have a blast playing through Empyrion, and I have really got my teeth in the building systems of late. It's an excellent outlet for creativity. If you can get past the jank, you're in for a treat.
SUPER janky! How janky? I pick a female body for character and then the character uses a male voice! With no option to manually set that. Also the POI tutorial gives me effectively nothing for how to interact with the strange invincible purple cube. Feels like the sort of thing I'd put together in a college course and upload to Steam FOR FREE! Like, trailer looks super cool, but after getting my hands on it, I kinda want a refund.
