Visually distinctive and fantastically written, Emporium blurs the line between game and art. Don't expect thrilling action sequences, but instead a slow-paced story revealed in fragments with dark themes touching on how we react to tragedy. Definitely worth it if you enjoy similar games like Inside , Kentucky Route Zero , and ISLANDS: Non-Places .
People are comparing this game to Kentucky Route Zero, but I feel like that's a bit unfair to both games. Both are allegorical and surrealist narrative experiences, and both use a low-poly 3D art style, but beyond that they're really quite different. KRZ explores a variety of different themes and subjects as part of a journey carried about by its cast, where the journey itself is quite easy to follow along when taken entirely at face value. Emporium is a lot more restrained, personal, and open to interpretation. Like the description says, it's a vignette. They explore fundamentally different themes in fundamentally different ways. If you like these sorts of surreal and experimental narratives (and you probably already know if you do), Emporium's low price of entry is well worth it.
Beautiful minimalistic design and impactful storytelling in a short, well-paced package.
5/10
i think this game gave me a migraine. might play again
