The save system doesn't work offline. On a many hour long RPG, this makes the game unplayable offline. Which boils down to a soft kind of online only DRM. Which is unacceptable for me. Still don't know whether this is a bug or an intended "feature", but since it's not the only game from these devs with this issue, it seems it's either intended or not important enough to fix. And this is a big enough deal that I'm posting this review to make it known to potential buyers, as there's no warning of this online only requirement on the store page. None that I can see, anyway. I'll remove this review (and rebuy this game) once this issue is solved.
Do you like games like Fire Emblem? Empire of Angels is essentially FE light... if all the characters were female, and lived in a biologically impossible world populated by ONLY females, and everyone wore sexy clothes... all the time. The game is a lot of fun. The story is serviceable, light-hearted for the most part, and doesn't interfere with what we're all here for, the battles. Two things really stand out for me. 1) The game essentially allows you to, very organically, choose your difficulty. Maps give you three optional objectives in the battle that you can either choose to complete or ignore, with two often making the battle a little bit harder/more intense should you choose to pursue them. If not you can simply breeze through a lot of the maps with minimal difficulty. 2) The game rewards you completing these optional objectives, but doesn't ostensibly punish you for not completing them; anything you earn through working harder during battles can also be earned through grinding, which is a nice compromise I think. Admittedly the translation isn't perfect- at times it is more a transliteration of the native Mandarin rather than at true Western translation i.e. some metaphors and idioms come off as awkward or incomprehensible because they are transliterated rather than rewritten to something more identifiable to a westerner. There are occasional misspellings and odd syntax as well, but all of these things are minor, in my opinion at least, and I don't feel anyone should be completely turned off by it. Also the game can be a bit grindy, and even encourages it. I've been mainlining JRPGs since birth so I break out into a cold sweat when I can't watch numbers incrementally rise over long repetitive sessions of play, but for those who don't grind up JRPG's a snort them through crisp rolled up dollar bills regularly this may be a bit of a turn off. All in all this game is a bit of a hidden gem, and certainly a credit to the Taiwanese game industry
Well, I have to say that I'm really enjoying the game. It's somewhat simplistic and a lot of the strategy is going to be based on the classes you choose for each character. The story is nice, and the character interaction is great. It's a cute game, and you really will fall in love with the characters. I'd also like to note that combat is quite fast compared to other tactical games, this is a good thing. Sometimes in these kind of games, the units move so slow, and then the animation is slow, but they did it right in Empire of Angels IV. In conclusion, it' a fun simplistic game with fun characters, good story, and really good character interaction. I am happy with my purchase and am enjoying the game.
50 hours.. and game complete. Still got a few grinding to do to unlock all achievement but it's still a pretty good ride! I have played angel empire 2 and 3 from like 20 years ago and this really brings back memories. Personaly I like 2 > 4 > 3 in that order but all 3 is still really good games maybe i wil go back and find 1 in some old website in the future to play it. Storywise 4 happens from 1000 years after story of 2 or 3. Cubbie graphics of Tactical turn base combat. Not as many class as previous games but still need to keep switching class interesting. Personally this one feels quite a bit shorter in the plot with some extra annoy grinding that you will have to do. Music are very well done at the most part and so does the consitency of graphics. There are a bunch of sprite animation bugs A good example is when a soilder fall on the grond he his sword clip though the ground. The voice acting and translation could have been done better. Some of the actress is trying but some of them feels like reading from a book in flat tone. Translation got lazy at certain parts and removed a lot funny chinese joke when translated into subtitle. 7.8/10 for a must play be serie fan but it does comes with it's flaws and shortcomings. PS: Story don't quite end at the end of the game and there are plenty room for sequal.
I remember playing Empire of Angels 2 about 25 years ago back when I was a kid on a 486 processor. It was a fun game. Empire of Angels 2 is a Final Fantasy Tactics lite before there is Final Fantasy Tactics. There is a passable plot and some comedy in between a series of tactical maps, which should sound familiar for anyone who has played SRPGs like FFT or Disgaea. What set it apart is the charming attack animations as well as a surprisingly diverse set of job progression with unique perks that is really ahead of its time. Classes with no retaliation attacks, poisons, unique attack patterns, and this is 25 years ago we are talking about here! You might be wondering why I am going down the memory lane in this review. That's because, Empires of Angels 4 is in many ways a sidegrade, compared to the second installment. Some would even call it a downgrade. Gaming has made great strides in 25 years, but this series have really stagnated and/or regressed in many ways. While the graphics has received an uplift by going 3D, it lost a lot of the charm in the transition as well. The production is passable but not high enough to wow. The bigger issue rests with the plot and gameplay. Maybe I was just more impressionable when I was 9, but I remembered the story being ok with some genuinely funny moments. Both the story and comedic elements in EOA4 feel forced. Which brings me to my biggest gripe with the game. The most inexcusable part is how the gameplay actually got WORSE. A lot has changed over 25 years in the SRPG world. Element combinations in Divinity Original Sin, combo attacks, flanking, height differences, geo panels in disgaea, there are a lot of things that we take for granted and new elements that that has kept the genre fresh for me over the years. You will not find a single one in EOA4. In fact, EOA4 has lost some of the cool and unique classes in EOA2. Everything just feels much more generic now. I would only suggest picking this game up as a part of a bundle or under heavy discount if you are a diehard SRPG that's on a drought. If you can read Chinese, I would even recommend the 25 years EOA2 over this game. 4/10
The Good

Artwork is cute and graphics are lively and decent.
Gameplay is simple and easy to get into.

The Bad

Story falls into cliche tropes.
Combat is dull and there is very little "strategy" in the battles. Enemies stack on you and most fights end up being slugfests.
Progression is grindy. Made worse by having to commit to such boring combat.
Maps are poorly designed. There are too many narrow pathways where all you can do is shuffle characters into a single file line moving square by square. I wasted so many turns meticulously moving characters through small pathways.
There are long stretches of turns where nothing happens. AI is too dumb to hunt you down. Combine this with poorly design maps and you will waste minutes upon minutes just positioning and trying to engage enemies.
Like a mobile game, Empire of Angels IV is boring and uninspired. If you're a NipponIchi JRPG fan, you've played better elsewhere.
I am not usually compelled to write reviews, especially positive ones, but this game is pretty great. I expected something awful, or laughably bad. The translation is a little Engrish and some parts of it lack polish, but it's a genuine, full fledged game. It has a bit of fanservice that isn't too bad, the character art is absolutely adorable. It looks like a more High Res Luminous Arc, but plays a lot more complex with class changes, dodging, and all kinds of things. There are secret quests, the story is surprisingly not awful. All in all it's very worth the 8 bucks I paid for it. Had I known this game was this good, I would have paid the full price for it. If you like tactical RPGs it's not going to be as hardcore or in depth as Fire Emblem or Disgaea, but it's easily as fun as FF Tactics A2 or Luminous Arc 2. Sadly there are no cute boys, but Frida may be the cutest thing I've ever seen. My only 2 nitpicks so far are that I'd like if there was a way to show characters in their default costume and not class costumes (Fridaaaa), and to pan the camera up and down instead of just zoom in and turn. There may actually be ways to do those things. Controller support wouldn't hurt. All in all though, I'd actually recommend this to my friends and already have. I went from joking with them about how terrible it would be to convincing them to play.

This game is very basic. no weapons, armor, items, or even shops. there are levels and class changes though. grinding early hurts you later because when you level up your stat ups will depend on your class and the lower classes will net weaker stats. you can swap classes as you like as long as you have the gold for the class change and have that rank unlocked. rank counts for all characters so once you have a rank new characters can change class to what ever you have unlocked. any character can use any class but the 4th rank one. this is unique for each character and needs a story trigger to unlock. Battles let you go back to any turn so you you don't have to reset every time you mess up an S rank. i don't like chests in this game because most force you to keep an enemy alive so you can get them and there's one where you have to lure the boss back off a bridge if you want to get to the chest. there's also no going back if you miss one that had a book in it well to bad so sad. these books are needed to unlock the cards though they are also underwhelming and the only other thing in chests is gold but unless you swap classes a lot what you get for end battle rewords is enough. Secondary objectives are just frustrating. you can't let any character retreat (get ko'ed) but also any other character on your side. one had npc's you can't controll and if the boss attacks them they get 1shot so ofc they run to their doom with glee. for one of the characters to get their last class they need to purge every infect npc AND you can not let them die. when you need to get all chest ofc they are in the most inconvenient place ever. most are just at the end of the map or off some were far away but for added fun these missions will also have a timer condition. sometimes even enemies near them so your lone fast unit gets tied up because they can't get past them until it/they dies. one has snakes spawning next to the chests so when you kill them they pop up at the chest. The story and translation are also very bland. there is voice acting but it's only in chines. the text translation isn't all that great but does get the job done. The game is very meh. it's main flaw is if you don't have internet you can't save and for a single player game that's a strait downvote from me.
