Discounts
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 3.33/day in the week to Aug 4 → 6.29/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 24 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 9 places towards #1, and the 2,404 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.
About
Prepare for the deepest, most intricate simulation of a world that has ever been created.

Not just generated geometry -- a whole simulated world. Generated rise and fall of civilizations, personalities, creatures, cultures, etc. Infinite hours of gameplay.
Now with beautiful pixel graphics!
Learn the basics with in-game tutorials
A lifetime “living” project - created/updated since 2003, with no end in sight
Generate your unique world and manage a bustling colony of dwarves, even as they probably mine towards their eventual demise.
A new endless hobby, just for you!

The legendary Dwarf Fortress is now on Steam! Build a fortress and try to help your dwarves survive, despite threats of starvation, dragons, and madness.

In this complex construction/management/roguelike simulation, every generated world brings a unique challenge, whether it’s dwarves with their own simulated personalities or aquifers. Observe what makes your civilization fall into eventual decline, and learn for next time… until something else inevitably goes wrong.
The combat model includes skills, body parts, material properties, aimed attacks, wrestling, pain, nausea, various poison effects, and much more.
It’s difficult to convey the depth of the generation. Hundreds of animals and monsters, many of which are randomly created for each world, as well as generated poetry, musical forms, instruments, and dances for your dwarves to practice and perform. A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity, and air masses to create fronts, clouds, storms, and blizzards. Over two hundred rock and mineral types can appear, in their proper geological environments.
Remember: Losing is fun!

This is still good old Dwarf Fortress, but with graphics support and music provided. A few bells and whistles won’t change its essence.
Classic Dwarf Fortress mod-artist Jacob "Ironhand" Bowman collaborated with artists Carolyn Jong and Neoriceisgood to create an all-new sprite pack for the game, which they continue to add to regularly.
Dwarf Fortress also has hours of music in a two-volume soundtrack by Dabu and Simon Swerwer, including tracks in the Dwarvish language!
It's never been easier to start playing! We've improved the new player experience with the addition of tutorials to guide you through building your first fort and keeping your dwarves happy.

Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in their generated mountain. Your dwarves will need a steady supply of food and beer, but they’ll also need your guidance in surviving attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness, or even the dead.
Craft treasures and furnitures from various materials
Establish a barony and support the increasingly demanding nobility
Read your dwarves’ thoughts to keep them happy
Build floodgates to divert water for farming, and/or prevent magma mishaps
Build structures and watch your dwarves discover and build their culture, like taverns, libraries, temples, honey, wax, pottery, animal training, bookbinding, and more.
Go anywhere! Explore any civilization, earn a reputation, and recruit followers to join you
Experience your fortress and the simulation in a new, more embodied way
Explore mythical dungeons to find magical items, artifacts, and fill your quest journal
Hints of mythology and magic as a start of future simulation enrichment to come
An additional hour of music from Dabu and Simon Swerwer, presented as a second volume of the original soundtrack

The original inspiration for RimWorld, Prison Architect, Minecraft and more.
One of the first video games acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York
Updated for over 16 years by two brothers, Tarn “Toady One” and Zach “Threetoe” Adams, and with the support of Kitfox Games since 2020.
Before you buy this, let me paraphrase and/or copy from the wiki, the armor mechanic and how to equip your dwarves:
In order for a dwarf to equip an item, the following conditions must be met: - Armor must be equipped in the order of the layers given. determines if they are eligible to wear the item in question (perhaps the body part is missing/severed); The layers are 'under', 'over', 'armor', and 'cover'. - must start with the lowest layer first, continuing to the next layer when no other items of that layer need to be equipped; - checks if the item is shaped [S] and will only equip the item if no other shaped items are equipped on that body part; - considers the item with the lowest permit value first. If two items share the same permit value, the highest-size item would be equipped first; - checks if the total size of items on each body part the current item would cover (excluding the current item's size) is less than or equal to the current item's permit level. - in case of an Armor layer item, also checks whether its own size + permit value is greater than the total size of items already on the body part. - in case of any non-Cover item, checks whether the total size of items in the same layer including the current item is less than the smallest permit value among these items. The uniform can consist of each of the layers mentioned. But not all items can be worn together. The item layer is not given in the item description in the game. You will have to check the wiki to confirm layers. It is common to see a dwarf equip pants with no undergarments due to this restriction, even when an undergarment is available. Not having a particular layer or correct armor type will leave your dwarf susceptible to damage, so be sure to look through all 15 types of chest armor (for example), and their material variants to correctly choose. There are 21 different body parts to protect. To effectively use the armor, dwarves must train and have a place to work as armored dwarves, so you will have to also create zones and buildings for this. A fully trained dwarf can move at twice the speed of an untrained one. Be aware that combat speed and movement are two different mechanics not covered here. Also be aware that different races have different armor requirements, and dwarves cannot wear human armor. To set custom made armor for your dwarves, and effectively use it: 1. Create a squad by opening up the squad menu. 2. Assign a leader to that squad from among your dwarves. 3. Create a uniform using the "equip" button. 4. Choose what armor pieces you would like for the uniform for each layer for the head, arms, legs, feet, hands, and head, using the rules and guidelines mentioned above. 5. Assign the armor to your squad as a uniform and let the dwarves self-equip. 6. Ensure your dwarves have the correct PERMIT value, otherwise they will be over-encumbered and unable to attack. See #Layer_Size.2C_Permit.2C_and_layering_armor on the wiki for more details. 7. Set a training area using the 'zone' function to specify a barracks for the gear, and another zone for training, and assign those dwarves to the area. See the full details here: https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Armor
If this armor mechanic alone interests you, then enjoy the game! Every single system in the game is more in-depth and detailed than this, and is intriguing in it's own right.

Otherwise, if you aren't reading all that, definitely look elsewhere.
I've tried a handful of times to play the game and understand why it's so highly rated. It seems like all of the positive reviews are for the concept of the game and not the implementation. My latest run is now bricked because suddenly none of my dwarves will mine anymore. They have picks, food, drink, priority...everything that they had back when they were mining 15 minutes ago. Strike the earth!!!....please? I agree the concept is fantastic, so I'll probably keeping trying here and there to see if things eventually get better. However, based on the 20th anniversary of content over quality my best hope for DF is that the Adams will sellout (completely) to someone who knows what they are doing from a technical standpoint. Until then, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
I loved this game back in the day but the stripping of keyboard controls to appease people who never played it to begin with has just made it a shell of what it was and it is just all around worse to play now. Also ran into bugs almost every single run with raids not happening, militaries not following orders and other weird things I never ran into with the original. I cannot in good faith support this Please bring back classic controls
☼Dwarf Fortress☼ It's the genre-defining, antiquated-yet-modern simulation game that has birthed thousands upon thousands of stories of love, war, triumph, and Fun. As somebody who has played the original as soon as Boatmurdered (Check it out for a truly legendary story!) appeared in the hillocks, the thousands of hours of value that I've gotten from what started as -- and still is entirely free on Bay12's site -- freeware is nothing short of a masterpiece. I love this game, and it has shaped my love of creative storytelling and writing into what it is today. So please, take a chance on the Steam version to support the devs, or check out the original. Take your journey from the Mountainhomes into the forbidding wilderness beyond, and strike the earth! Thank you, Tarn and Zach, for my favourite game of all time. And thank you, folks like Kruggsmash and BlindiRL for bringing the game into a broader scope for even more people to enjoy.
Not being able to store water and having my injured dwarfs die in hospital becouse thirsty is stupid
THE UI IS SO COMPLICATED: IF YOU WANT TO SPEND ALL YOUR TIME CONFUSED CLICKING RANDOM BUTTONS I COULDNT EVEN GET THRU THE TUTORIAL WITH MY ADHD AND I LEFT THE GAME "UP" SO I COULDN'T GET A REFUND. THIS GAME TRIGGERS MY ADHD FRUSTRATION BIG TIME AND I ALWAYS END UP RAGE QUITTING DURING THE TUTORIAL. GAME PLAY CONTROLS ARE WAY TOO COMPLICATED. I WISH ICOULD PLAY LOOKS INTERESTING.
Been playing since around February 2016 so add like +4000 hours or so to my steam playtime for a more accurate number. Even in ASCII form this game has been like crack cocaine, keeping me up all night. Telling myself "just one more hour, just one more season, just one more siege." But deep down? I am just lying to myself. You can dig. You will dig. You MUST dig deeper. You will slaughter those filthy goblins off the planet, you must cleanse it. You will unleash the circus and party with the clowns. And you will do it all over again. Because losing is fun.
Karl would approve of this! PS Pro tip: dfhack is a must.
This is a no-go for me. The closest possible zoom on the map is way too far away, and the only way to change it is to lower your game resolution and keep hitting F11 to get the game to actually recognize the resolution change. And you have to do it every time you launch the game. I know it seems like a small complaint, but there are lots of other games out there that offer similar simulation experiences with settings that actually work properly. And from what I'm reading, this is just one of many glitches that have been around for a long time and the developer hasn't fixed. Refund requested.
