About
Prepare for the deepest, most intricate simulation of a world that has ever been created.

Not just generated geometry -- a whole simulated world. Generated rise and fall of civilizations, personalities, creatures, cultures, etc. Infinite hours of gameplay.
Now with beautiful pixel graphics!
Learn the basics with in-game tutorials
A lifetime “living” project - created/updated since 2003, with no end in sight
Generate your unique world and manage a bustling colony of dwarves, even as they probably mine towards their eventual demise.
A new endless hobby, just for you!

The legendary Dwarf Fortress is now on Steam! Build a fortress and try to help your dwarves survive, despite threats of starvation, dragons, and madness.

In this complex construction/management/roguelike simulation, every generated world brings a unique challenge, whether it’s dwarves with their own simulated personalities or aquifers. Observe what makes your civilization fall into eventual decline, and learn for next time… until something else inevitably goes wrong.
The combat model includes skills, body parts, material properties, aimed attacks, wrestling, pain, nausea, various poison effects, and much more.
It’s difficult to convey the depth of the generation. Hundreds of animals and monsters, many of which are randomly created for each world, as well as generated poetry, musical forms, instruments, and dances for your dwarves to practice and perform. A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity, and air masses to create fronts, clouds, storms, and blizzards. Over two hundred rock and mineral types can appear, in their proper geological environments.
Remember: Losing is fun!

This is still good old Dwarf Fortress, but with graphics support and music provided. A few bells and whistles won’t change its essence.
Classic Dwarf Fortress mod-artist Jacob "Ironhand" Bowman collaborated with artists Carolyn Jong and Neoriceisgood to create an all-new sprite pack for the game, which they continue to add to regularly.
Dwarf Fortress also has hours of music in a two-volume soundtrack by Dabu and Simon Swerwer, including tracks in the Dwarvish language!
It's never been easier to start playing! We've improved the new player experience with the addition of tutorials to guide you through building your first fort and keeping your dwarves happy.

Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in their generated mountain. Your dwarves will need a steady supply of food and beer, but they’ll also need your guidance in surviving attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness, or even the dead.
Craft treasures and furnitures from various materials
Establish a barony and support the increasingly demanding nobility
Read your dwarves’ thoughts to keep them happy
Build floodgates to divert water for farming, and/or prevent magma mishaps
Build structures and watch your dwarves discover and build their culture, like taverns, libraries, temples, honey, wax, pottery, animal training, bookbinding, and more.
Go anywhere! Explore any civilization, earn a reputation, and recruit followers to join you
Experience your fortress and the simulation in a new, more embodied way
Explore mythical dungeons to find magical items, artifacts, and fill your quest journal
Hints of mythology and magic as a start of future simulation enrichment to come
An additional hour of music from Dabu and Simon Swerwer, presented as a second volume of the original soundtrack

In the first fort (that wasn't instantly killed by starvation or thirst) I played, my Military Captain was an awesome lesbian axedwarf who kicked and chopped the asses of every threat I encountered. Her wife was a tailor/poet and she would always perform in the tavern, which my captain adored. They even adopted some kids (who in hindsight were probably from a previous marriage) and I loved following their little family. And then the werehog came. Immediate chaos. It tore through a farmer who was gathering on the surface, and attacked several civilians before the army could go meet it. Despite their best efforts, one of the soldiers (not the captain, thankfully) and several civilians were bitten. I tried everything. Walling them in, even killing the old soldier when she turned and managed to cause havoc in the sideroom of the hospital she was locked in. That, combined with the arrival of a beast/giant(I cannot for the life of me remember, all I know it killed nearly everyone) left my fortress a ruin. The hospital was full. Even the wife of my beloved captain was in there, slowly perishing from her wounds. My captain, oh my poor, stubborn captain, Catten was her name, was severely injured but not cursed. She could still hold an axe. When a few more dwarves, including a child, turned into werehedgehogs, she dragged herself to the front of the hospital, and shouted "begone, fear!" before the werehogs were upon her. Somehow, someway, maybe due to her nature or willpower or the fact her wife was behind her in the hospital, she hacked and slashed and struck the werehogs down without getting bitten. Then, when all was quiet, she dragged herself to a hospital bed next to her wife, and collapsed. My doctor tried their best, but neither could be saved. Catten saw the life leave her wife's eyes, and seemed to accept her end, dying mere moments after her. I buried them together in a tomb, and made a statue in her honour. I genuinely took a break from the game afterwards. It affected me so much that I'm sure someone will find it ridiculous, but it was one of the best tragedies I've witnessed in...anything, let alone a game. 10/10, would cry my eyes out again
Quite unfortunately, Dwarf Fortress might as well be abandonware.
Game is literally unplayable, and it doesnt matter whether this (steam) or free version. I came back to dwarf fortress after a few years of not playing. Every version from 50.04 upwards causes either CTD or whole OS crashes. I tried every solution - installing C++/MSVC redistributables, running game in windowed/fullscreen mode, turning multithreading, administrador mode, windows DPI optimization on and off, updating drivers, but to no avail. Game crashes after at most 5-10 minutes, whether playing with or without tutorial after starting new world. Its a shame, especially considering i liked mouse support, new graphics and music a lot!
Karl would approve of this! PS Pro tip: dfhack is a must.
THE UI IS SO COMPLICATED: IF YOU WANT TO SPEND ALL YOUR TIME CONFUSED CLICKING RANDOM BUTTONS I COULDNT EVEN GET THRU THE TUTORIAL WITH MY ADHD AND I LEFT THE GAME "UP" SO I COULDN'T GET A REFUND. THIS GAME TRIGGERS MY ADHD FRUSTRATION BIG TIME AND I ALWAYS END UP RAGE QUITTING DURING THE TUTORIAL. GAME PLAY CONTROLS ARE WAY TOO COMPLICATED. I WISH ICOULD PLAY LOOKS INTERESTING.
Really wish i could figure out how to play this
Whatever CPU you have, it's not enough
This is a no-go for me. The closest possible zoom on the map is way too far away, and the only way to change it is to lower your game resolution and keep hitting F11 to get the game to actually recognize the resolution change. And you have to do it every time you launch the game. I know it seems like a small complaint, but there are lots of other games out there that offer similar simulation experiences with settings that actually work properly. And from what I'm reading, this is just one of many glitches that have been around for a long time and the developer hasn't fixed. Refund requested.
Been playing since around February 2016 so add like +4000 hours or so to my steam playtime for a more accurate number. Even in ASCII form this game has been like crack cocaine, keeping me up all night. Telling myself "just one more hour, just one more season, just one more siege." But deep down? I am just lying to myself. You can dig. You will dig. You MUST dig deeper. You will slaughter those filthy goblins off the planet, you must cleanse it. You will unleash the circus and party with the clowns. And you will do it all over again. Because losing is fun.
