A fun point-and-click murder mystery where you end up in the other world. XD

Introduction
Duppy Detective Tashia is a point-and-click murder mystery, adventure game developed and published by Spritewrench. You're Tashia, who ends up in the other world after a random encounter with a stranger in which she loses her phone. Tashia wants to return home, but Mikey, the archangel in charge of the Halfway Market (which is a sort of go-between for spirits who've passed away), is caught up in solving the murder of one of the residents of the market. Tashia volunteers to help solve the murder in exchange for Mikey's help to return home. Mikey accepts, and so, Tashia is on the case. ^^ As for the gameplay, it consists of point-and-click elements. You can click on witnesses to interview them and get information about the murder victim and other relevant details. Also, you can click on places, even if no one is present, to look for clues. If you find a clue, Tashia can use her five senses to learn more about it. After a certain amount of time, there is the nightly market meeting, and Tashia must choose, based on evidence and witness testimony, among two residents who more likely committed the murder. There are a total of 5 episodes, and Steam achievements are present, but they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game".
Review
I've been following news about this game on social media ever since I first learned about it, and of course, murder mystery is among my favorite genres (if not my most favorite). Thus, I was happily surprised when the developer reached out to me and offered a review key for the game, and I definitely wanted to play this on the sooner side.
Story and Gameplay
I enjoyed how the story starts off a lot. Rather than narrating how Tashia ends up in the other world, there's an animated scene that shows her on the sidewalk and bumping into a suspicious person and losing her phone in the process. Before she realizes what happened, she discovers that she's in the Halfway Market, and it must be a mistake since she can't be dead. Tashia is such a fun MC, with her emotions worn on her sleeve. I like how she psyches herself up when it comes to solving the case, even when she runs into roadblocks. As for the other characters that Tashia interacts with, they're quite the fun cast of characters. They're based on creatures from Caribbean folklore, which totally makes me want to read up on it at some point. They range from the highly energetic fabric shopkeeper Dee to the somewhat shady moneylender Doyle. It's entertaining to learn about these characters as Tashia goes about to solve the case. As for the story itself, it is generally linear, but I like how there are slight variations, depending on whom Tashia chooses to name as the murderer. Finally, there are a couple of major twists later on that caught me off guard (in a good way). XD With the gameplay, it is very fun. The point-and-click elements are simple to use, and I like how you can access all the tasks that Tashia has to complete as well as keep track of all the evidence and info about the residents of the market. Also, you can replay episodes if you wish. I should note that I experienced a couple of technical issues. If you replay an episode, you might get a bug in which the dialogue refuses to proceed. Also, certain residents won't appear if you choose to replay an earlier episode from before they were eliminated or disappeared. However, these bugs will probably be fixed in future updates, so for now, I'd suggest that if you want to play this game on the sooner side, play it from beginning to end. Then start the story over, maybe deleting the save file so that no accidental glitches appear, and make different choices as to suspects and whatnot. I should note, too, that even though the game has windowed mode, it defaults to fullscreen after exiting the game and starting it up again. I wish that the game would remember to keep it on windowed mode, but I do like to multi-task. As for achievements, I had no problems obtaining all of them, but they'll probably take a couple of playthroughs.
Art and Music
The art has this colorful look which I liked a lot. The sprites and backgrounds feel very hand-drawn, so I can tell that plenty of heart and passion went into it. Especially, the map looks great, and as I mentioned earlier, I liked the animated scene that appears in the beginning of the game. ^^ https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3742454504 As for the music, it has a very energetic, upbeat sound. It's fun to listen to the tracks as Tashia goes about, collecting evidence and talking to people. No voice acting is present, but there are high-pitched sound effects when someone is speaking. It's a great touch and it allows the reader to imagine the characters' voices without them being completely silent.
Conclusion
Would I recommend Duppy Detective Tashia? If you're looking for a fun point-and-click murder mystery to dive into and/or you enjoy getting those Steam achievements, then this game is definitely worthy of your time. Even though it's on the short side (one playthrough took me around 2 hours), it's worth the price point for the gorgeous art and fun music and gameplay. Of course, you can wait for a sale, and it's in a few Steam bundles. Finally, I'd like to thank Spritewrench for the review key. Duppy Detective Tashia is definitely a great fit for those (like myself) who enjoy murder mysteries along with fun point-and-click elements and narrative gameplay. ^^
For more detailed, fully complete, high quality reviews like this, please follow The Introverted Gamer, prioritizing heart and soul always. ^^
Game's really cool so far. Saw the dope trailer a while back and was excited to play it. The characters are really charming, the soundtrack is already stuck in my head, and the art direction is refreshing. I also just like learning about new folklore I don't know much about. Learning about the Duppies and seeing how they're portrayed has been delightful so far. Looking forward to solving the mysteries ahead.
No, sorry. This isn't worth it. It's extremely short. Like 1 hour at most. While I usually don't care that much if the rest of the game is good, this is a bit lackluster mystery and definitly not a detective or point and click game, There are no deduction sequences or anything similar, that you might expect given how popular that mechanics have become in detective games. The game instead holds your hand and points you towards 2 suspects every day, you don't have to think for yourself or do any real puzzle solving. This is really a short visual novel with fakeout choices that all lead to the same endgame. I think that's my main issue. There is nothing outright bad with the game, but I was thinking this was going to be something it isn't. While I liked the artstyle and it's always cool with games from places and cultures that are not as prominent in the game development scene (in this case Jamaica), that's not enough and this is unfortunetly a game I can't recomended even if it has a fair price. Also the logo (the magnifying glass) and name together is a little too similar to Duck Detective. Pure coincidence or an attempt to make people think it's a similar style game? The reason for the longer playtime for me is that i had to replay chapters several times to get the achievements to work. There is a weird bug with the achievements, the 2 times where you have a binary choice of picking a culprit, the game just cuts to credits before you make the choice if you already finished the game and then try and replay the chapters right after. The game just skips the actual choice and go to credits in both scenes. Doesn't matter if you make a new save file or even delete the first one. The only thing that does work is if you close down the game and start it again. Nothing major, since there is a workaround but it was a little frustrating.
Duppy Detective Tashia is such a cool and fun whodunnit / werewolf type of game. I love the Caribbean culture and folklore represented through the charming characters and the bubbly patois conversations. The art is really fun with hand drawn comic-like half-tones vibe, and the music is really really cool. I really like Tashia and the characters, and the way that the investigation and the snooping happens is a lot of fun! Great game!! Minding that the game is newly released, there were two instances where I had hiccups: 1. The game shut down on me a couple of times where it completely froze and I had to restart it. It did save the previous episode, so it wasn't all that much to replay (especially since it has some replayability). 2. When I got a cue to check on the phone, it just continued without letting me inspect it. I guess that's not supposed to happen.
Great Cast! Multiple Endings! Visuals are cute! Caribbean culture on full display, get some of that lore in your brain in a cool way. As far as puzzles go getting this is a good example of simple mechanics applied in an elegant way. No regrets
Tashia has an ahoge just like the Danganronpa protagonists 🥹💚 SHSL Duppy Detective Anyway... this game is super cute! Tashia is such a wonderful protagonist to follow. Her facial expressions are so cute and funny. I loved the diversity of the character designs! It's really easy to just modify and existing character just a little to get a new one, but each one was lovingly crafted and original. While the game doesn't have a lot of content, and takes roughly an hour or so to beat, I think the price is fair since it's all hand drawn. And it's nice to have a game inspired by Caribbean folklore!!!
A delightful and charming short game that gives a very interesting dose of Caribbean folklore that had me eager to look into further. Despite the title, the detectiving is very limited within the game, with choices feeling like they have only a small impact on the story, so this may not be the game for those looking for a mystery to solve. There are also a few minor inconsistencies that can crop up towards the later stages of the game. But this game has SO much charm. The characters are all very distinct and fun, and the art style is great! The music absolutely had me frequently bopping my head along with the beat, which is something the characters are also doing throughout the game (which is a small detail I ADORED)! I would have liked the solution to the mystery to have had more small hints throughout the story, it did feel like it came a little out of nowhere, but the story as a whole was delightful and well-paced. A definite recommend for any lovers of folklore!
Un juego de misterio en el que nada es lo que parece. Me ha dado pena que sea tan corto porque lo estaba disfrutando mucho. Es cierto que a veces se puede hacer un poco complejo de entender por el idioma. Pero merece la pena. A delightful, adorable, and enjoyable game! The art is wonderful and the characters are fun! I can already tell I'll be playing this multiple times.
I played this given the excitement I saw around it and the mention of Caribbean Folklore. It was a very quick interactive visual novel, but I enjoyed my brief time in it. I was drawn in by the funny characters and the hand drawn art and the conversations. I appreciate seeing some Jamaican dialect, too. Some real love was put into this and it was wonderful to see representation of Caribbean tales and influence. However, I think it's a bit of a stretch to say this is more than just an interactive visual novel and appears to be this teams first go attempting mystery and a point and click. The story is too linear to feel like you are in control of what's happening. While there is some deductions happening via our main character, I came to a completely different outcome at least once and was disappointed I couldn't choose a different culprit. There were no real point and click mechanics beyond navigation, so I feel that is extremely misleading. While you do go to places and uncover clues, you don't have to search for them or choose the right one. Lastly I was disappointed that little energy was put into the inclusion of the stories of the entities you came across. That was the main reason I immediately bought this game. I was hoping for something deeper, but it was all very surface level and while the characters certainly had personality, they didn't necessarily need to be associated with the Folklore. Overall, there isn't enough decision making/deduction and interaction in the right ways to put this on par with other mystery point and clicks, but I'd want to see this team try again. All that said, I don't want to punish the developer for not quite hitting the mark tagging wise, but I'll recommend this solely for those looking for a fun, quick interactive visual novel that's outside of the norm.
