Killer is way TOO Obvious!
This is an interesting VN that takes the setting of a travelling circus in US. Pity if it had been voiced it would been even more great. Story: Fine Nothing super fantastic or plot twisting it is pretty mediocre in my opinion, with the logical flow. also a bit confusing at times. There seems to be a lot of unanswered questions. You follow the journey of a detective and a replacement magician for an employee that goes missing in a famous circus troupe. You also have to solve the mystery under a time frame and with limited actions, which is unique but can be a bit challenging. The lead ring master had gone missing and the replacement which is a volunteer requested by her hopes that she can find what happened to her once you finish a single hour with her then it automatically switches to the detective who gets robbed mysteriously right off the bat. There are a lot of character endings which honestly you can get in one playthrough also. So all in all just find the murderer i guess, the murder scene is unique and you can think in different angles, evidence are scattered around in a way that everyone can be a suspect. The interesting part was the circus setting and the characters. But yes you will easily notice who the killer is, i felt like at the latter its just given away. Characters: Interesting The characters I feel are more interesting than the story itself, there is a variety. I would say the most entertaining one would be Yan and I actually did like Alys. Yan is quite the little troublemaker and Alys, she is a sweet heart. I would say the magician replacement is a curious character mysterious still, hiding her face but observant. The detective is definitely nothing Sherlock holmes but he fits the picture. But both of these characters have an unexpected plot twist, which at a point don't fit at all but I guess it's interesting? You do discover a lot of background history and personal info about the unique characters there is a clown, fire breather, animal tamer, acrobat etc and overly quiet puppeteer. Gameplay: Smooth/Unique There were no bugs and the gameplay was smooth, what i have to complain about is the fact that it has an AP limit. Yes there are also some HOG scenes which consumes AP, you can creatively increase the AP too by doing side tasks and gaining exp, so there are small RPG elements into this. You can max the AP limit to 8. Each time you present an evidence you loose AP and even a contradiction. With contradictions you will get new evidence, also you can choose character profiles as evidence too and present it to people. Art and music: Great! The art and animations are so polished, I really liked the character designs and the soundtrack was chosen perfectly to suit the personality of the character. I think Aly's one is my favorite. I also liked how sleek the task pad was, it was designed in a way as if its like opening a drawer. Achievements: Fair Most of them are very straightforward, some people complain that they did not unlock master logician achievement but I did even after loading a save, you need to have specific evidence in the inventory maybe. The only annoying part is you have to replay the whole game to get the missing person's ending, my advice is for each start of a new hour make a safe if you are going for the achievements. Overall A small visual novel about an incident that happened with an American circus troupe and a joint effort of a magician and a detective to solve it creatively but them without even meeting face to face!
A really solid entry in the difficult world of detective visual novels. Bold enough to experiment but not so brazen as to think it can completely re-invent the wheel. Clearly born out of a love for the genre. The biggest strength is the freedom and versatility given to the player in the way they investigate. There's really no "wrong" way to play, and the extent to which dialogues will naturally reflect the things players have learned is almost startling. The mechanics are creative without being overcomplicated, and the core loop is compelling. The characters and writing are (mostly) strong; Chip and Echo are a bit too much like caricatures for my taste, but Aideen, Rolf, and particularly Moses feel complex and deeply human. There are a fair few typos throughout, which is unsurprising considering the sheer volume of dialogue available, but still jarring at times. This does lead to a few confusing moments where it's unclear whether what seems to be a mistake is another genuine error, or an actual clue. The aesthetics are strong, but sometimes conflicting. The snazzy, stylized transitions don't really mesh with the earnest story-book painterly style of the main scenes. Feels like maybe two different artists worked on this, or maybe just development took long enough that tastes changed. Overall, despite the little flaws this is an under-discussed gem of the genre which deserves a place among the greats listed as inspiration in the credits.
It's a good game, I really liked it. But a lot of my enjoyment came from the character writing and the characters' narratives, not from figuring out the mystery at hand. I'd say the mystery and the investigation are much more a framework to explore the characters, rather than the actual narrative focus. So if you are looking for an intricate murder mystery, this might not be for you. Edit to add: I do think full price is a bit expensive, I finished my first playthorugh in 5.5 hours
Based on price alone. The story is okay-ish. There's not much detective work here, since most choices are funneled into 1 or 2 places to go or person to ask. Lots of filler that does a good job of explaining the characters or the setting, but aside from this there isn't much gameplay. It's almost a visual novel. 5 hrs of well presented entertainment, I just wish there was more cases.
I absolutely adored this game! I'm a big fan of detective type games, especially the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Series. I played the demo version of this game on my Nintendo Switch back when I had no money and recently played through the demo again and decided to get the full version on my laptop! I was a bit overwhelmed by the action points system and switching between characters, but I quickly got used to it and it's a very cool game mechanic that I've never seen before. I definitely recommend making a lot of separate save files so you can redo your days and get all the dialogue for fun :) This game is also very different than the Ace Attorney Series but that definitely doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it just as much. I would say this game is a lot less "heavy" than the Ace Attorney games whether that be because of the warm cozy atmosphere of the art style or having less death and courtroom proceedings lol. Feels like the type of game you could cuddle up in a blanket with some soup and hot cocoa to play. I will definitely say that this game is a lot more about experiencing the characters and the environment, than it is about the detective portion. The characters are my absolute favorite part. I could tell that they had so much love put into them. They seemed more real than the ones from other games. I loved that you could get to know them and see their personalities, and get fun dialogue from each of them that had nothing to do with the detective part, they just felt so diverse to me. For example there's a kid that likes playing pranks and if you talk to the other characters, they will tell you a story of how she pranked them with fun art to go along with it, or there's a guy that likes animals and if you talk to him about the other characters, he will compare them to animals with cute art of the animals themed after those characters, it's just all very fun and cute and very customized and you can tell each of the characters is loved very much by the developers. My favorite character was definitely Yan, I was always wanting to ignore the case and go talk to her and see what she was up to and had to say about everything, because she's really fun and funny to interact with. I remember telling someone that she was so well written as a kid, she felt a lot less like an adult writing a child and more like she was based off a real kid, and based on the end credits of the game, it sounds like they might've actually asked a kid to help them write her dialogue, which is awesome! I've never seen such a well written kid before, it made me wish I was like her when I was a kid! There's also some character experiences with trauma, abandonment, abuse, foster care, as well as at least one character that's LGBTQIA+, even though this game takes place in the 1950s I believe, and I thought that was so cool as I can relate to all of those experiences too! I have tons more I could go on and on about but I will end this by saying the ending of my first playthrough was very confusing to me, I didn't understand it at all, but I played it through a second time and understood a bit more but it also deeply affected me and I still have yet to recover (you're welcome I guess lol) But all in all, it was a great game, tons of content even for a higher price but for sure for under $20, it may take a bit to get used to the action point system but just make sure to save a lot and try not to stress about it too much and you will have an entire wonderful world awaiting you!
