a cheap knock-off to the original hoplite on mobile 1. the graphic is worse (kinda like a bad flash game). normally i wouldn't bother but this is my first impression of the game that kinda steal idea from another game but come out worse in any way 2. there's no indicator at all. it didn't tell you any range of your range weapon and the effect of any abnormal status (what's the meaning of "stun"? how would i know how far i can throw it? and what's the radius?), it didn't tell you any enemy range (i would have no idea if i didn't play the original before, how am i suppose to know the enemy spearman's range? what about axe? etc.), it didn't tell you how to even use the most basic attack (frontal attack), it didn't tell you any info at all 3. leave the enemy alive give you a penalty of not gain any exp (aka skill point). what's the point of that when the main idea is reached the last level? (so there's no room for creative/pacifist/challenge run which the original does) tl;dr just play the original on mobile. it is much better and free. i would refund this already if i didn't bought the key from the other site
I really enjoyed the game, a different approach for a roguelike, the game itself its fast to learn but hard to master, you have to make the right combination of skills to fit best your strategy. You upgrade your character quiet fast almost after every level. I hope they had more dungeons and bosses in the future.
It's a pretty good puzzle-y rogue-like where you pick strategic bonuses to build your character defensively and offensively and need to carefully plan your next step around the placement and damage capabilities of each type of enemy on the field. I think it's fun and makes you think, and is great for shorter sittings. I would recommend it at the asking price! That said, I've played like a billion rounds of Hoplite, the Android game this is inspired by, and I do prefer that over this. Hoplite is really hard, and often frustrating, which this is not. I think that's not a bad thing, but neither do I feel like it's really an improvement over the original. This game adds some more offensive skills (more ranged options, most significantly) and you can pick from the full list of special bonuses at the successful completion of every level instead of a random, limited list of choices like in Hoplite. That's nice because your build isn't as subject to RNG, but it makes the game feel less difficult (so the "puzzle"/"strategy" aspect is a little less satisfying), and some of the bonuses are clearly overpowered and more useful than others. I think the graphics here don't look very polished; I greatly prefer Hoplite's pixel graphics. I would also like to be able to turn off the persistent blood spatter. It's a super tiny game (only 67 MB!), but feels ever so slightly sluggish on my 5-year-old laptop. That actually turned me off the game a bit, but I tried it on my desktop before writing this review and the movement feels acceptably crisp and smooth. There are a few things I actually don't like about this game. One is the inability to make the window a) smaller and b) portrait instead of landscape. As a game inspired by a mobile game and that uses simple graphics, it doesn't need to be such a big window. I'd love to play this while watching a movie on the other half of the screen. The second is that 23 levels is too long for one "round". There are too many same-y early levels with the first two types of monster before a third one starts appearing. You get good at killing them/avoiding damage after you survive a few levels and pick up a couple bonuses. The third is that you're punished for not killing everything on the level, which doesn't make sense since your end goal is just to get to the bottom and kill the boss. You shouldn't lose XP for finding a way to escape without wasting time killing everything. I love roguelikes, Dungeons of Hell is based on hoplite, a very nice roguelike for smartphones I would say 9/10 for this one. This is just my personal opinion based on my own tastes. Pros: - pixel art graphics - quick to learn - fast to progress your character (if you die , it won't take much time to bulk up your new character again) - addictive - many different strategies to achieve the same goal - different skills to use in different situations depending on what's your strategy - achievements - tactical choices ( sometimes one wrong move can be fatal) - price Cons - none really, I hope it gets new dungeons and new type of enemies
Having a great time working out different strategies - easy to learn, but hard to master. A great rogue-like diversion for a quick fix.
I can already say that this game is going to be my new favortite for a quick steam off session after work. Very quick turn based game, the demons are very original, my favorite is the witch that summons demons if you let the ♥♥♥♥♥ live long enough the dungeon gets filled with demons to kill. For anyone that loves Diablo this has the same vibe, similar soundtrack and you get to kill non stop which I like. Very strategic too, gets your mind going recomend it for sure
"Dungeons of Hell" is an unabashed, lazy ripoff of the mobile app, Hoplite (Copyright Two Brothers LLC, 2011). Many lazy "amateur" developers don't pay attention to their obligations under copyright law, and often steal the ideas of actual, real game developers without credit, such as the "developer" here has done. At this stage no legal action has been taken by Two Brothers LLC against the "developer" here, but it's never off the table, as previous copyright law cases have shown. Putting aside the unethical intellectual bankruptcy of stealing someone else's game concept for profit, this is also breaking that unwritten law of stealing other people's game ideas... you should at least try to do better than the game you're ripping off. "Dungeons of Hell" is considerably worse than Hoplite. Just like the Hoplite mobile app this is ripping off (and I really hope Two Brothers sues), it's a turn based procgen "roguelite" where you move one hex at a time, defeat enemies, pick up various simple upgrades... it's a shallow experience, but then this is just a ripoff of a mobile app, so understandably this is too simple and shallow to qualify as a genuine, serious PC game. It's not, it's garbage. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. This looks and feels like a mobile app, but it doesn't seem to have made it to the app stores. It's unclear why this was put on Steam instead of the app stores it seems to have been designed for. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all). Regardless, for all intents and purposes "Dungeons of Hell" might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 4 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. "Dungeons of Hell" is stupidly expensive at $5 USD, this is a cash grab/scam price. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product. $5 for this garbage, or you can play Hoplite for free on the app stores. Decisions, decisions.
