The game seemed pretty good when I started it. I have been looking for a match 3 game like puzzle quest for a while. However, as I played it, got more and more frustrating. Most abilities have hefty negative aspects to them. The few that do not are incredible OP. That means that if you do not have one of them, it is really frustrating and you just keep restarting until you get one. Yeah, frustration is not fun.
I played the demo so maybe it's my fault for buying, but after playing a bit more I realized how polarized the battles are. You have to match in exactly the right order and if you match something else it resets so you have to have multiple matches set up. Other match-3 battlers are more dynamic where you either get some benefit from more types of matches and/or at the very least you aren't penalized for matching the wrong color. I would recommend Roguematch, Puzzle Quest or Gems of War over this if you want a match-3 battler type game, but this has a free demo and is pretty unique so maybe you'll have a better experience than me.
From frustration to excitement; sure the methods of destroying the enemies is highly difficult but with the help of the Spells and Relics, foes will eventually be at your mercy. That's why getting all the Steam Achievements is doable. One this that bothers me though is Endless Mode; apparently I got so many Relic powers and went so far that the game started crashing with all the multiple match streaks. It just couldn't keep up and yet because of that, I couldn't beat the Global Timed score of over 50,000 Points, despite that I was around over 30,000. And apparently I shouldn't have started a new game altogether beforehand and I doubt I'll ever make it that far again. Other than that, this is a good Match 3 game to try out and finish. It could also use so Steam Trading Cards, too...
Fun little match-3 rogue-like game. Strategic, each enemy requires different actions/combinations to be vanquished and you get many spells and artifacts that changes your playstyle as you progress, it was entertaining. You have to major gamemodes, turn by turn, you act, the enemy moves, you act, the enemy moves, or real time, you can act as fast as you want but the enemy never stops moving, both gamemodes are fun :) I can see how the game would improve, by making more stereotypical characters that forces you on using limited sets of powers, adding side/quests, a town, dungons, etc, maybe in a sequel that could be very cool. Anyway, for the current price, the game is worth it if you like this genre and will keep you occupied for some hours :)
What a great puzzle/match-3 based roguelike! If you like the Puzzle Quest games, you will more than likely highly enjoy this game. This plays more in the traditional roguelike style than the Puzzle Quest games, but this is absolutely jam packed with variety for such a small game. Plus, it provides a little more strategy to how you match tiles by having to match colors in a certain order. This discourages you from just "matching and hoping". Great job by the developer(s)! Highly recommended!
Dungeons & Jewels is a fantastic Match 3 game. First of all the way you match matters, most enemies have specific rules how you can defeat them. Matching specific colors in a row, vertical or horizontal matches, match 4 and 5, restricted board, spawned objects on the board or encounters that are entire puzzles are just some of the mechanics you will encounter. And I haven’t even mentioned the boss fights that often are multi-phase endurance battles mixing a lot of the mechanics. The game offers 2 different modes: timed, and turn-based as well as 2 difficulties and an endless mode. The normal modes do feel a bit easy but endless mode has you fight 2 or 3 normal encounters all at once so if you want a challenge endless is the way to go. The game allows you to start with any 2 of the equipment you have unlocked and some items are just too powerful. I think limiting the starting gear for each character would make the game more interesting. This game does mostly everything right I want from a Match 3 game and I did have a great time playing it.
Finally got 100% on this game! Super indie graphics, music and sound effects. I loved it's simplicity and I reckon it's one of those rare titles you could port to a NES! Such an addictive game, I couldn't stop playing it, except for the endless mode. I got a super broken run and literally couldn't die. After 2 hours I quit this mode and had no desire to reach the top of the leaderboard. It would literally take days! One improvement I think the dev could make would be a sort of Eden character that picked random relics each game. This would be a true test of skill. Currently you can just pick your 2 favourite relics each game and just steamroller your way through each character and it kinda made each run feel quite similar, despite the extra difficulty levels. Also, the map is probably the most basic I've ever seen in any video game. Could do with a bit of polish. Other than that, the game feels very well balanced and would recommend especially for such a low price. Try the demo if you're on the fence.
A deceptively good match-3 roguelite despite first impressions and primitive graphics. Pros: + Impressive variety of enemy types (i.e. not the sprites themselves, but the matching types you need to make to take them down) + Branching paths through various biomes for each run + A multitude of items & spells to unlock / equip for your character + Unique sound effects for the various creatures you encounter = Music is appropriately atmospheric, even good at times, but the loops are short and the overlaps are noticeable = It's nice to have the option available, but since the game is a puzzle board to be studied most of the time, the two 'Timed' characters are rather an exercise in pain and frustration since the game devolves into matching anything available hoping for the best before the time runs out Cons: - Rudimentary graphics - Some of the items / spells have very little value (e.g. the Wooden Ring which adds colorless gems on the board, useless against any enemy) - No undo option / ability for those mis-clicked moves - No tip / suggested move for that one last match on the entire board
