Suddenly, out of nowhere, this game has been pumping out a bunch of random DLCs. It's hard to figure out what's going on here. The game was amazing, half a lifetime ago. Then they had a bunch of flops. Dungeon Defenders II, flopped. Then they made several spinoff games that all seemed to flop. Now it seems like they're trying to cash in on nostalgia and get people to buy a slew of DLC. I can't find any articles or news posts explaining what's going on, what the developers are trying to do, or what their plans are for the future. With so many sketchy and shady rug-pullers and scams entering the gaming market... I sincerely don't trust whatever is going on behind the scenes with this game.
its holds a dear spot in the heart this was mine and my dads fav game before he died

I stopped playing once they decided to "add content" by extending the grind that already existed by lowering equipment drops, a core aspect of the game which you will spend many hours on already. You don't make a grindy game even more grindy just to make people play longer. New content through DLCs is whatever, so long as it's actual content like new maps. But reducing drop rates on things that already take many hours to farm up is just a weird decision that nobody asked for. Feels a lot like the old creating a problem then selling the solution type of deal.
I've been playing this game for years along with my friends, and we always end up coming back to it. There's nothing quite like the first Dungeon Defenders-- it is relaxing, surprisingly difficult sometimes, and just a good time. I wish its sequels had lived up to the original, but my friends and I have all been shocked at the amount of recent updates to this one. I'm so happy it's still receiving new content. Shout-out to the devs who are maintaining and improving it even after literally 15 years. I think it'll always be in my rotation of games. Definitely worth the $15, and most of the DLC characters are also a lot of fun.
Fun old game that I put a ton of time in over the years. If you're into the kind of gameplay it offers you can get really into it. I've returned to it several times with a wiped savefile just to play through it again. But the direction Chromatic has been going with it most recently has more than soured my taste for it, and I'm not sure I'll ever be coming back to it. Chromatic has released.... what, three or four other dungeon defender games after this one? All of which but the live service "2" have flopped. This first game was always considered the gold standard, hence why basically everything they've released after has been an attempt to remake it or reimagine in. Eventually they (correctly) handed EoL development to dedicated community members who went on to make the redux mod. Loved the redux mod btw! Huge kudos to those involved that worked on it. But at some point in the last year or two.... they revoked it. They "resumed" updating this game, and by updating, I mean releasing a slew of new paid DLC. New classes, expensive generic anime girl skins, for a 15 year old game. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ would you guys stop milking Dungeon Defenders 1 for money and just make something else? Please? The game itself will always hold a special place in my heart. I implore anyone seeking to return to the game these days to skip over Chromatic's newest blatant cash grab attempt and just play the old redux mod in the betas tab for the game.
My main account (Veetoo) has more than 8000 hours into this game and now with the new heroes it will prob be the same for this account :) Absolutely fantastic game, even when playing solo
I've been playing DD basically since its release, remember most of the meta changes, and have bought almost all dlc's in the game. So what iam about to say is coming from a long time fan.. It pains me to say this, but the game has been broken. Mistakes have been made, heroes have been added, and metas have shifted. The people who complained about lightning towers won in the most confusing way, and are now tower stacking 25 wisp dens with no auras. At this point my friendlist is looking like a ghost town, with 1 person out of 21 still playing the game. Half the public campaign playthroughs are warden players with 1.5k tdmg "trying" nmhc campaign and basically getting it done afk. I just recently helped a warden player with 1.6k to get palantir nmhc done. PALANTIR! 1.6k !!! And i saw a 2k warden successfully doing tavern defense nmhc survival with pure wisp dens. not even buff beams ffs... I left around wave 16, dunno if he finished. Whats even worse is that people are defending this hero and get mad about its nerfs... Its a complete solo hero, disinsentivising any form of grouped / strategic play, and a visual nightmare with all its projectiles. Even if you look at it in a vaccum, warden is litterally broken. At least on hermit all 5 towers have a use case. Wardens only use between 1 and 3 of their towers. Nr1 Wisp dens ; Nr2 Mushrooms ; Nr3 the cloud tower HOW DOES THAT SEEM BALANCED TO ANYONE??? Wisp dens are CLEARLY overperforming. And, as shown by all the new maps, LIGHTNING TOWERS DONT GET THE SAME JOB DONE! They dont have the dps ! The above is basically just a bunch of stats that i picked up from playing and talking to others. Now to my own opinion tho. Imo Warden should either have its damage nerfed roughly 30-40% on all towers, or its DU cost increased significantly. The projectiles from wisp den are a visual nightmare, either make them smaller, or give them the ability to pierce 1 target and halve either its attack speed or proj amount. Give wisp dens (which are clearly light/lightning based) the lightning damage affinity so people have to use auras at least. I have never, in the history of this game, seen a hero that DOES NOT WANT AURAS. Its completely insane to me how this is allowed to exist. And lastly.. not to do with warden.. please stop it with the ruthless bs.. It was meant as a challenge for extremely high stat players, which isnt great but I can live with, but gating insanely strong items behind ruthless is just idiotic. What happens to "extremely high stat players" when they get insanely strong items? They want even harder content. Congratz you just dug your own hole, eventually people will feel the need for 10b hp bosses, done solo, which gives you a 999 all stat pet or weapon. You are proly laughing at this now but just wait a couple years xd Instead of allowing this weird stat fetish to flourish you should just tell people to unequip their chestplate, or try to do it with myth/trans/supreme gear as a challenge to yourself. I dont see how that is any different except that people wont have to feel like they are missing out on insane ruthless gear to be able to do the new content. Its just 8k stat players, having 8k stat problems. Its the same as a millionair complaining about having too much money and going into politics to increase taxes for everyone. Its ridiculous, and it is killing the fun for many people.
Great classic game, I have fond memories playing this on Xbox Arcade back in 2011.
i played this game 15 years ago when it came out and its still just as fun and addicting in 2026.
I just finished playing through the base game, and it immediately took me back to when I used to play Dungeon Defenders on the Xbox 360 with my dad. It's just as fun as I remember, and the gameplay is still incredibly satisfying. I haven’t played the DLCs yet, but if they’re anything like the core experience, I’m sure they’ll be great. More maps, more characters, and more ways to experiment.
