First of all I want to be clear; I think a lot of people who expect to like this will like it. I enjoyed it a good deal for about 15 hours, started to get sick of it, and then fell off hard, with plenty of content in the campaign remaining. While I think there is a lot of good going on here as a tactics game, I do think the reasons it falls short for me might make sense to some tactics fans, but if they sound like non-issues to you, you might likely still enjoy it quite a bit. There is compelling strategy, strong calibration of stuff like balance and difficulty curve, and the X-Com-esque movement-range/action system works well. However: -The missions have pretty good variety in terms of the narrative of the mission--infiltrate and rescue, outrun two giant monsters you can't take on, defuse all the bombs in X turns, etc. But at the same time, far too many of the missions overwhelmed me with a sense of time pressure for most/all of the mission--not just because there are a lot of "defuse the bombs in five turns" style missions, but because every mission also has these side objectives you're supposed to try and pull off, often when returning to a mission later when you're stronger. -I grew to hate the side objectives. Sometimes I just want to focus on slaying the dragon, ya know? But instead, I ALWAYS have to figure out how to awkwardly remove a party member for a turn or two to go grab some bonus objective (rather, three bonus objectives). If the rewards were minimal, maybe you could ignore it, but unfortunately the rewards are quite significant. They have so much thematic immersion in a lot of these missions, and I wish it wasn't axiomatically dilluted by a stressful time urgency which is exacerbated by annoying side objectives. -I loved the Grimrock games and have logged many hours on both. Those games are so unique while being a love-letter to oldschool RPGs, they made bold, uncompromising design choices (like invulnerable elementals, brutal traps and puzzles, etc), and I think the secret-riddled gorgeous environments were some of the most imaginative and fun to explore this side of Dark Souls. In short, the Grimrock games feel both AAA and very "artful," and this game feels like a pretty safe, run-of-the mill tactics effort. Very little in the game to surprise you, or reward your thinking outside the box, or make you feel truly creative. -Leveling up your units isn't satisfying enough. The impact is there, but the creative ownership isn't. Sure, adding a fourth charge to my warrior's whirlwind attack is relevant and feels ok, but what about giving it poison damage so I can combo it with my Mage's poison build or whatever? There is so little of that sort of thing. There ARE abilities (like teleport swap, the fun of which tries so hard to carry the game lol) and synergies which are compelling/rewarding strategically/creatively, but if you've just come from X-Com, Into The Breach, Final Fantasy Tactics, I think this falls short of even being a solid tier 2 emulation of another formula. Now, I'm not saying it doesn't still do a lot of things its own way. The no-nonsense focus on missions, the sort of splitting the difference between tactics game and puzzle game, I'm sure all of that is for someone. For me I didn't think any of their new takes on campaign progress or combat were enough to fix the core cardinal sins of not deep or creative enough, and too much focus on efficient turns and squeezing in actions that don't aid me in winning combat, coupled with the interim/level-up stuff being pretty meh (I don't expect to build a whole base or whatever, but the character progression is approaching dull IMO. No new characters to unlock means the ones I got should be pretty robust). In summary, the combat scenarios are thematically cool is the best thing I can say/the game's stand-out, and I guess if you don't let yourself stress the side objectives (or enjoy them) or turn down the difficulty such that you can effectively ignore them or something you could mitigate that. I just think the game is a weird combination of macro story with characters that are trying a bit too hard, combined with essentially just a jillion compartmentalized tactics/puzzle combat scenarios, and somewhere the formula just isn't rich enough and doesn't evolve enough, and the story is fine but like, we're tactics gamers we're here for the gameplay. Maybe I'm letting my own preferences cloud me on this one, but I suspect there are probably tier 1/2 tactics games that are $25 or cheaper that you have yet to play and should probably play over this one if you're reading this.
Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest – это хорошая игра, стоящая своих денег.
Simple, yet fun.
Others have already stated a lot of issues so I'll just pick the main problem I personally had with the game. The main point I dislike here is the constant enemy spawning in every or nearly every mission. I consider this kind of design a crutch and while it could be used effectively anyway if done with care, consideration and restraint here it is done with wild abandon. I don't think it was done without careful thought but the end result is very similar to the one where the design aim was to make the game as tedious as possible. If done carefully in a few missions it could add tension and provide a challenge but with this implementation and randomly teleporting in enemies it simply makes the game worse for me play. I liked Legend of Grimrock games made by people from the studio but this is just not a game I ultimately enjoyed which is unfortunate.
This is objectively a well made good game. I like the mechanics and game style. The one con is that I find the game to lack a bit in the 'fun' department. I can't tell exactly what it is, but I feel like I enjoy it less than I should based on the facts of the game. Maybe I wish I had more of a connection with the characters.
Beautiful tactics game, which plays almost like a puzzle at times. Narrative is also quite good.
Short review after finishing the game and getting all but one achievement: a short tactical RPG with a great charm, good for both beginner on easy and advanced players on hard difficulty. Pros: - The art of the game is beautiful, the forest, ruins and other areas look well done and are pleasant to watch, same for the world map its pretty and in theme with the games overall art - Great soundtrack and combat/skills effects very good for a small indie studio, the two best soundtracks are the main menu and world map theme very beautiful to listen - The combat feels tactical with a lot of options available both from the skills of the characters and from the weapons/armors/items which are not just stat boosts in fact their main purpose is to add additional skills. This game heavily favors correct movement and positioning to perform attacks/skills and an automatic counter attack for each character if an enemy moves in their immediate vicinity - With three difficulty modes, puzzles and a lot of side objectives inside a mission, the game does not get boring - Some nice and witty jokes from a certain red mage Cons: - The story is average but decent main problem though is the pacing, the story moves too fast from plot points to another, while it is not hard to understand the game, it misses the opportunity to explain its lore deeper (character backgrounds, multiverse, ancient civilization etc.) - Very short game, if you are not grinding for steam achievements, you can complete it under 10 hours - Only 4 real playable characters which is low for this kind of games I must say i was surprised by this game. I thought it would be an average play through however the combination of great music and very good combat system with a fast and rewarding mission progression left me impressed so i recommend this game to all tactical RPG fans or to anyone looking for a hidden indie gem.
