(Wer Gameplay sehen will, dem kann ich nur wärmstens das Angespielt des besten youtubers aller Zeiten "Steinwallen" empfehlen). the characteristic move of the Germans in WWII is the pincer movement, where two attacking columns envelop the enemy from two directions. In this game you can only move and attack from direction at a time.....disappointing game with very little depth, you'll feel like playing backgammon instead of moving forces on the battlefield.
I have a few dozen hrs in this game so I can safely say that its pretty good. The sound design is a really nice touch, the U.I is really easy to get used to and it doesn't throw a million different mechanics at you making you still confused as hell after hundreds of hrs. If you're looking for a really in depth strategy game that will have you playing a campaign for long hours then this isn't it. If you're looking for a pure strategy game like Panzer General then this definitely isn't it. The best way I can describe DoM is like playing chess with dice, where whether you can capture a piece is down to what number you roll. And I think that's my biggest problem with this game, the RNG. Having a strategy game be based on RNG isn't bad in itself but when Im stuck on a tile with three tanks against a single unit of infantry for three turns just because the guy hid behind a tree, I ain't gonna be too happy. All in all though, its a fun game. If you're looking for a strategy game that isn't too taxing on your brain then this is a pretty good pick.
This is what happens when you take a "beginners" tabletop wargame from the 1990's meant to introduce new players to the world of wargaming (by being simplistic and unrealistic and not requiring much warfighting skills) and port it to iOS and THEN port THAT over to PC. you get a game thats more like a puzzle than combat command, where fire and maneuver dont matter and you are forced to find the perfect combination of steps to take to win instead of knowing warfare. Its about as close to simulating the combat that it depicts as chess is to simulating a gunfight in a back alley. that is to say: not even close. the map is pretty though.
blah blah blah, play panzer corps instead of this one.
If you like board games at the operational level this is a great rendition of this particular battle. This game along with Battle of the bulge are great little games that seem simplistic at first but have a lot of depth under the hood. This is a game if you have a quiet afternoon and you want to grab a cup of coffee and get a turn by turn history lesson along with your game play then this is an awesome title. Easy to learn but if you do make a mistake or fear taking calculated risks the AI will punish you for it. The replay value is also decent so you get some good bang for your buck. If it goes on sale it's a must but even at regular pricing for fans of the era and fans of board games this is a great pick!
good game, but the dice rolls are obscenely bad. Dice rolls are fun in physical board games, but are just godawful in electronic games, especially ones vs AI. Having your triple infantry or double panzer stack do simply nothing versus a one or two pip infantry in a forest (a sight that I have seen too many times to think its anything but intentionally grating) isnt fun or exiting, its exhausting, especially when those units cant do anything else for the turn, and the way the stacking mechanics work makes it worse than useless if you have a 3 or 2 pip unit. Units cant reliably move through eachother because infantry only moves one hex, mechanized infantry is mostly useless (except for one or two units) like seriously who looked at a two pip unit which cant hit and went "ah yes, this is exactly what I would want in a game that can only have three units in a tile" half the time I only move them as line holders so the early russian infantry kills themselves attacking units they think they can beat. Not a great thing to do with mechanized infantry (or motorized) but theres no offensive happening if one of your combat units is at two or three strength. Overall, a fun game, with some replayability, but playing the germans feels like ♥♥♥♥ because one bad dice roll, losing a few tank pips, especially if the russians have gotten even just one unit per tile in the forests... its a pain in the ass.
