Play in multiple dimensions at the same time, traveling through them at will in this innovative 2D platformer that defies boundaries! I'm Eva, by the way, and I promise we'll have fun! Or maybe not... Maybe we'll both suffer horribly... How should I know? I'm just a video game character...

I haven't finished this game yet, but I still wanted to give it a shoutout. The main goal of We are Eva is to reach a teleporter in a small level room to move to the next one. The thing is, navigating through these levels can be hard with all the construction and surfaces blocking your path. It's a good thing there are 2 levels in one, meaning you can switch between either of the 2 anytime and still be in the same spot you were in. On the other hand, the 2 levels aren't completely similar being slightly different from one another, but those dissimilar can be all you'll need to reach the path you want to get to. You just need to memorise what both of these levels look like so you don't end up getting stuck somewhere or dying in the process. That is not the only difference, each level is colour-coded (yes including the split level), letting you know what type of level is it, for example, if it is blues the level is floating, yellow, it is slippery or, purple (my most hated one) your movement controls are inverted. As you can see, this game is simple in concept but deep in platforming gameplay. You can't just turn you're brain off playing this one. You need to memorise what each level looks like and the pathway and controls to reach your goal. But don't worry, if you die (and you will do, like a lot), you'll not only respawn from where you started the level, but the level design changes a bit, some not as drastically as others but still enough to make you rethink the strategy to apply to complete the room. You could say dying over and over again is a strategy in itself to get the level changes you wanted that will make it easier to reach the teleport easier, can't say I haven't tried. The more you progress through the game, the harder the level becomes due to the level layout and colour-coded construction. This could be discouraging if you're finding it harder and harder to complete them. It's a good thing you got Eva to help guide you along the way, or she tries. She's the character you are controlling throughout the game, as well as an in-game commentary providing you with funny fourth-wall-breaking jokes about your progress and some dialogue talking to you personally about your performance, almost like the developer is watching you. You'll be surprised by some of the input she put into the game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3356928813 I like how Eva was incorporated into the game. She really kept me going even when I was stuck on a level for 10 minutes. It's a breath of fresh air to feel like I'm not the only one struggling when I play a game like this by myself. Glad to know Eva is struggling with me. Thinking about it, she'll probably be mad at me for not logging into this game for months. Hope to return to this soon.

I didn't dislike the idea of the protagonist speaking with me as I played through a platformer, but a mechanic like changing dimensions can be hard to implement well. Having tried several indie titles, I've found the genre isn't as easily mastered and created as it looks. None of the negative reviews I read touched upon an issue that's not obvious from the description or trailer, and that's the core mechanics.
Gameplay
I think like most gamers, I don't object to a challenge, or the occasional shift in how one or two levels play out of the entire experience. However, when it comes to the overall game, there's certain aspects we really don't want being screwed around with as we're playing. A few examples from WE include reversed controls, limited visibility, and having a restrictive time limit before instantly dying. If all of these were isolated, and you only had one annoying gimmick to contend with at any given time, this wouldn't be so bad. Due to the dimension-switching gameplay, and the choice from the developers to combine annoying gimmicks together, you'll have to deal with two halves of a piss-you-off machine at the same time, “Oops, I spent too long while in the wrong state. Dang, I didn't accommodate for the reversed controls switching back to normal and missed my tight jump. How delightful!” Feel free to list any examples where combining two bad ideas led to a good game, because I'd be curious to see what people think of. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3623199589
Controls
An area I struggled with was switching back and forth from normal to reversed controls, which is hard to assess objectively. No matter the game, I'd likely struggle with timing that exactly right during difficult jumps, which makes me question its inclusion in the first place. Otherwise though, I don't think there's any problems with the game's controls, as I never died from lagging. It might be mapped out a little oddly, since there's other face buttons available that could have been included. However, the controls and set-up is functional, and more often than not I wasn't getting confused by which button to press.
Story
Eva is a creature that exists in numerous dimensions at once, and spends most of her time sleeping. She's able to close rifts, which helps stabilize all of existence, and has chosen you to assist her in this task since she can't see. Something unexpected is occurring though, as goblins aren't able to change dimensions, but she's finding them in several areas. Despite the game description suggesting Eva was going to be a chatter box, I found her dialogue to be well spread out. You have to die numerous times in the same level for her to make any snide comments, so I didn't find her to be a nuisance like I was expecting. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3623199331
Visuals
Considering what the location is supposed to be, I think a black void with jumbled bits of land meshed together is sufficient. It's not that uncommon for a one screen platformer to keep the visuals pretty basic. The player avatar is a bit stiff, since there aren't many frames of motion, but she kind of looks like a sprite, so I think it works well enough. If anything, I'd say it's the enemy designs that fall short. Wriggling worms aren't really that menacing, and having a brown hood floating around in the dark seems lame. I'm not sure what went wrong with the goblins, but their faces looked squished, making for an enemy that's ugly in a way that's not really to their benefit. When peering at the different icons for the achievements, I'd say this is a failure in design or execution, because I've rarely seen images so badly composed before. They don't inspire me to work for them.
Sound Design
I'm not positive if there's a single song that plays throughout the entire game, or if there's a few variants that you eventually loop through. Either way, as you're progressing through different sections and read the text, there's never an interruption in the music. There's nothing particularly memorable about the music, although it might be a bit too upbeat, but I didn't have any reason to complain about it. When it comes to the audio balancing, the music is pretty faint, especially with the noise that comes from switching dimensions. Considering that you have to intentionally alter the dimension you're in, I think the accompanying sound effect could be much quieter, as you don't really need a warning for something you activated yourself. The sound effect made when you die is both pathetic sounding, and a touch annoying due to its pitch. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3623199129
Pros
🌟 If it weren't for the combination of terrible gimmicks, I think this would have been a pretty enjoyable platformer. 🌟 I found how the story was presented interesting, not finding the wall-breaks off-putting.
Cons
❌ Since certain features of a level can be randomly generated or altered, some layouts are easier to contend with than others. I think this touch of randomness plays against deliberate level design, but not in a positive sense. ❌ If you want all the achievements, you'll have to beat the entire game at least twice. There's no way to save partway through the game and take alternating paths, or access specific levels in a new game plus run. ❌ Not only does the game contain annoying mechanics, certain parts intentionally have you deal with two of them at once.
Tips
🔍 Some features of a level are permanent and won't go away no matter how often you die. For instance, the inclusion of specific enemies or obstacles. In many instances though, those can change, such as whether or not there's a goblin in the level. 🔍 Based on how it was worded, I initially thought wall jumping was limited to a certain dimension. However, you use it all throughout the game.
Final Thoughts
What aggravates me most about the reversed controls is how the developers already knew everybody was going to hate dealing with it, but included it regardless. Not only that, but why not combine it with other mechanics to make it even more frustrating? Since there's no clear sense of progression in the game, I checked a speedrun, and realize I only made it about halfway through all the levels. Normally, I don't mind beating short levels, even if they're annoying. However, there's no reason to combine aspects like these, other than to tick off the player, and I don't enjoy games like that. Despite having some built-in features for speedrunning, only 14 people have submitted a time for this game. Unless you're wanting to try a possible rage game, I wouldn't recommend this title.
Wonderful quirky little game designed for both first impressions and for replayability. 9 / 10 [-2 for very evil level design, +1 for amazing execution]
Juego plataformero desafiante, está bastante bien para el precio y las horas que puede tomar dominarlo. 9/10.
fun little precision platformer with a unique mechanic.
I don't think I'm going to replay this game. If a charming, but frequently frustrating puzzle platformer sounds like something you'll only play once, get it at a discount. At the time of this review it's on sale for two bucks, which is a steal for just about anything.
