Dredge: A Captivating Voyage into Cozy Fishing and Cosmic Horror
Dredge is an absolute masterpiece of atmospheric game design—a unique and gripping adventure that beautifully marries the relaxing tranquility of a fishing simulator with the chilling dread of Lovecraftian horror. Developed by Black Salt Games and released in 2021, this indie gem hooks you instantly with its addictive gameplay loop, hauntingly beautiful world, and a creeping sense of mystery that keeps you sailing deeper into the dark. It is a wonderfully crafted experience that is impossible to forget.
🌊 Atmosphere and Visual Style
The atmosphere in Dredge is a masterclass in tension and contrast. By day, the game is stunningly serene, featuring a gorgeous, stylized art direction with striking cel-shaded visuals, picturesque islands, and a beautifully calm ocean. The ambient soundtrack during the day makes you feel completely at peace. However, when night falls, the game transforms entirely. A thick, oppressive fog rolls in, the music shifts to a discordant, unnerving hum, and the ocean becomes a terrifying place where your own paranoia—and the monsters lurking in the deep—can destroy you. The way the game transitions from cozy to terrifying is nothing short of brilliant.
🕹️ Gameplay, Inventory, and Upgrades
At its heart, Dredge relies on an incredibly satisfying and addictive gameplay loop. You spend your days sailing between mysterious archipelagos, catching a massive variety of fish through engaging mini-games, and dredging the ocean floor for sunken treasure and materials. Selling your catch allows you to upgrade your fragile little trawler, equipping it with better engines, brighter lights, and bigger fishing rods. The inventory system uses a clever, Resident Evil-style grid puzzle mechanics where you have to carefully arrange your fish, engines, and materials to maximize space. It makes every single voyage feel like a rewarding strategic puzzle.
📜 The Mystery of the Deep
Beyond the fishing, there is a deeply compelling and cryptic story waiting to be uncovered. As you collect strange relics for a mysterious Collector, you interact with the quirky, often deeply unsettled inhabitants of the islands. The environmental storytelling is top-notch, delivering just enough dark lore to keep you constantly intrigued without overexplaining the supernatural forces at play. The constant pull of curiosity—wanting to know what lies just beyond the next reef—makes it incredibly hard to put the controller down.
⚠️ Drawbacks
While Dredge is nearly flawless in what it sets out to do, the core gameplay loop can feel slightly repetitive in the late game once you have fully upgraded your boat and mastered the fishing mini-games. Additionally, players looking for high-octane action or deep mechanical combat might find the stylized, evasion-heavy encounters at night a bit too simplistic. However, for an atmosphere-driven adventure, these minor points take nothing away from the stellar overall experience.
🏆 Conclusion
Dredge is a hauntingly beautiful triumph that proves you don’t need a massive budget to create an unforgettable, deeply atmospheric world. It balances the cozy joy of exploration with the bone-chilling thrill of cosmic horror in a way that feels completely fresh and utterly captivating. For anyone who loves rich atmosphere, satisfying upgrade progression, and a great mystery to unravel, Dredge is a mandatory voyage. It’s a flawless indie treasure that will keep you under its spell from the first catch to the final, dark revelation.
Rating: 10/10
honestly obsessed with this game. i'd get any and every dlc that ever drops. incredible art, storytelling, pacing, gameplay, i can't get enough. 15/10.
Dredge is an amazing 9/10. Dredge is a short and simple game about being a fisherman and uncovering cosmic mysteries. The game starts off a little slow but once you get into the game loop it branches in fun directions with each Island having a unique trait. (~13 hours for first playthrough) Pros----------------- Graphics: The 3D graphics are good, not too detailed but not bare. great balance. I Loved the art from the fishes and the aberration variations. Small Details: Pursuits align with where they are found and done on the island chain. Ship Customization: Little marrow adds a painter that is not needed but a good plus allowing the player to customize their boat. Quests: I thought most quests were fairly fun / unique making the player do different things or find special items. Fishing: A couple small mini games similar to Among Us tasks. Cargo: I really like that the player is limited with gear / loadouts. The player needs to decide how and what they will be catching depending on what they have installed. The Shipboard Tetris inventory management is a GREAT way to give the player options on their own style while also limiting where / how many and what can be placed. Cons----------------- Options: Small point but I don't like how some buttons must be held rather than pressed. Maybe give an option to not click/hold. Seems kind of for consoles or the console port options mixed into the pc version. I understand for docking your ship but other functions seem like they could be changed. Cargo Locking: Some instances of picking items up don't allow you to place items back down forcing you to throw away things or redo your inventory. Why can't I place back in the crab pot to fix my ship cargo?? (mainly annoying at Devil's Spine) Bugs---------- -No Bugs found in playthrough Overall, Dredge is worth a pickup. Good art, fun gameplay loop, fun world. This game has the problem of me just wanting more content. I wish the archipelago had more islands and more fish to find. I loved the undertone of the Cthulhu influence all around the map. I would recommend this game to anyone!!!!!
Great fishing game, with a lovely story.
Beautiful Art style and Storyline. The game reveals new lore and mechanics at an amazing pace that feels natural while still pushing you to explore the unknown
