Dream of Things is a puzzle game that doesn't feel quite like any other puzzle game I've played before, but also doesn't feel so different from other games that I was constantly lost or struggling. It's hard to classify really, but I suppose if I had to try to describe it, I'd say that most of the puzzles involve collecting a variety of items and learning how to use them to manipulate the states of 'dream worlds' of increasing complexity. Each dream world comes with a goal stated to you by its primary inhabitant, and every goal is different (though there is some crossover) Some of the objects you use to manipulate those worlds are things you will be used to manipulating in puzzle games. Boxes, keys, mirrors, switches, lasers, etc. But there are also plenty that you wouldn't expect, and that's where the game really shines. Because they are dream worlds, they operate under dream logic. Part of the fun is learning how the large variety of objects can be used to accomplish goals you might not think of at first. If I were to give any examples it would feel like a massive spoiler, but there was a number of times where I found something new and thought 'how will I ever use this?', which would lead to a fun surprise when I got my answer. There were also times when I theorized what I was looking for, (even if it was something odd for a puzzle game) and was happy to be proven right. The further you get into the game the more complex the worlds are and the more items you'll need to use together, but even so it never becomes too complicated to understand. The narrative structure gives you only a few levels at a time, which does a really good job of compartmentalizing what you can use at any given time and preventing the number of objects you can manipulating from being too overwhelming. I will say that I played it with a friend on discord providing a second brain for puzzle solving, which helped a lot. There were a lot of moments where he would have a flash of inspiration or come to a conclusion I didn't, and vice versa. One puzzle section was even a bit overwhelming for me and probably would have taken me a long time before I began to make sense of it but he immediately clocked what needed to be done and helped walk me through it in record time. Without him my playtime might have been an hour or so longer. Both of us appreciated the game's natural escalation in difficulty. By the final set of levels we felt that the game had created a perfect pattern of introducing us to odd spaces and letting us learn how those spaces worked, followed by the puzzle solving of using that knowledge to try to accomplish a specific goal. We both enjoyed the final levels the most, as they felt like a perfect culmination of all of the patterns we had seen before. The story did seem to be a large focus of the game, complete with cutscenes and a lot of text. Even though I found it interesting (and never got bored) it also never fully resonated with me. I wasn't 100 percent sure how all of it tied together in the end, and along the way there were a lot of moments where the game felt just a bit over-tutorialized and over-explained. At the same time it was trying to create a complicated world unlike nothing I'd seen before and the story was originally written in a language other than English so it is possible the creators wanted to make sure that nothing was lost in translation. It did not hinder my enjoyment of the game in any way. All in all I'd recommend Dream of Things. I only discovered it after playing the demo for the creator's next game, Tape Man, which at the time of this review has not yet released, but seems like it will be a game I love. If you're reading these reviews after playing that game and wondering if Dream of Things is worth checking out, it is.
I love this game, it wont take you more then a few hours to complete, and the puzzles can be slightly challenging. Also love the art style and how some memories use different art styles. Includes wonderful story and ideas that is something ive genuinely never seen any game or book cover.
