Nice pixel art and it's fun to customise your ship with a variety of different weapons and upgrades. The game felt tough at first, but when you find your rhythm you'll be levelling up and decking your ship out in no time. Recommended.
Well worth the 10 bucks if you like this genre. Classic graphics and gameplay, with some fun weapons to try out. Though you end up spending the vast majority of your time on the first mission building up cash and a few levels. Mission 2 is a small difficulty spike, but thereafter the missions kind of fall one after another. They feel rather short from 3 through the final mission. I love these type of games, but the things I miss that Tyrian had were the secrets and the excitement of powering up your weapons. Also, each playthrough felt a little different. Here there’s no visual difference between your level 1 weapon and level 10 weapon. Nor, by and large, is there a necessity to search for secrets by making sure to destroy everything. So it becomes a sort of flat experience with nothing to do with your money by the end. Nevertheless, fun enough for $10

Fans of your rpg in your shmup, or your shmup in your rpg, doesn't matter, you have both in this gem of an indie game. The grindy aspect of Dreadstar will keep you busy upgrading you ship, shield, weapons etc in order to explore space. Highly recommended for both fans of the genre and also gamer making a new entry.
The game looks, feels, and sounds basic, and progress is an absolute slog. "Oh, you beat the first stage and made *some* money? Well, you have to repair your ship, so maybe you can afford a new weapon after your next run."
One of the most fun Shoot'em up on a PC you can play , This is RPG Shoot'em with many various of levels and enemy. upgrade your ship buy weapons and shields and other stuffs. The graphics and the music and the gameplay is perfect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gunnyKyVtII&t=145s
Fun old school style game. Controls occasionally freeze on first ship, but that might be intentional by designers of game so it is more fun to upgrade ship later. Is rather short, but that is kind of the point.
Dreadstar is an RPG+shmup hybrid. Isolated from each other, both the shmup and RPG gameplay are a bit on the simpler side when you compare it to the more focused games in both genres. However, as a combination of the two Dreadstar ends up nailing the formula. There are plenty of RPG shmups out there, and nearly all of them absolutely suck, and after playing through Dreadstar I'm honestly amazed so many RPG shmups suck because Dreadstar makes the marriage of these two genres feel so natural. The shooting gameplay is basically what you'd expect from the Genesis/Turbo-grafx era of shmups. Less about littering the screens with bullet hell and more about twitch reaction dodges. The RPG side of the gameplay has two elements to it: XP and equipment. Even if you fail to complete a level, you're always gaining XP which can help ease the frustration often present when learning the patterns in a new shmup. If you do manage to complete a level, you get a huge reward of gems which you can use to buy equipment for your ship. Nearly every aspect is customizable: weapons, shields, specials, ship size, speed, etc. Most of the replay value comes from experimenting with different builds, and while I've only cleared the game on normal I'm already positive that you'll need a variety of builds at your disposal to handle the variety in levels as you play on harder difficulties. Overall, the most dedicated shmup enthusiasts might not care for this game. But that's not who it's made for. This is a game for players who could never really get into the abstract sort of scoring gameplay that shmups have evolved into over the years. It's a game more for the strategic-minded players who appreciate the fundamentals of shmup gameplay.
