Years ago, the great hero Ortega bid farewell to his wife and child as he set off on a quest to defeat the villainous Archfiend, Baramos. Ortega failed his quest, and Baramos still threatens the world. Now, on their sixteenth birthday, Ortega’s only child is summoned by the king of Aliahan and entrusted with a mission of the highest import: to take on Ortega’s quest, vanquish Baramos, and save the world.
Recruit a variety of allies, with three able to join your party to aid you on your quest. Choose their vocations, appearances and their voices. There's even a brand new vocation exclusive to this remake: the monster wrangler!

This is good, but keep in mind the plot is VERY simplistic. Keeping in line with other games of this era, there just isn't very much going on and what is here is partially lost in translation. Like one character will say "It's crazy how no one knows about this catastrophe that is about to kill all of humanity" then you walk outside and actually everyone knows about that catastrophe because no one in town will shut the hell up about it. There is an overarching story that is just ok, but if you skip it you won't miss anything. This game definitely has a lot of good things about the gameplay, but it has some oldschool jank as well. Nothing was a dealbreaker for me, I would just have turned up the difficulty at the beginning. On the "Dragon Quest" difficulty I only had to turn off the auto-battle like 3 times in the entire game.

I've played every version of this game, it's probably the easiest version, but it's the most modern and not everyone has my love of the super famicom or game boy color visuals. I do wish they had way to view the art they have for every item in the game for more than a second after opening a chest though.

Have you ever experienced? Using Zing 10 time and it's all missed ??. WTF this is suck. It's not a bad game, but some mechanic is weird. If you wish to play this as your first DQ, I highly suggest that don't. Play something else first.
After 2 full playthroughs, I just think this game is almost perfect in every way. This is essentially a 38-year old game with a new splash of paint and it has aged and stood the test of time throughout it all. A true monument of game design from literal decades ago. The game is old-school for all the right reasons but brings much appreciated modern accessibilities making it so easy for anyone to pick up and play. I envy players who got to grow up playing DQ3 on the Gameboy Color but if you're like me with a Steam Deck you take everywhere or you carry a portable gaming device that can play this, now is the best time to try and capture that feeling! Truly, a window to another world. It's fun, it's bright, it's whimsical in every imaginable way. DQ3 HD-2D captures the simplicity of the type of game it is to the complexity of its systems that its previous versions had but with a dramatic and beautiful facelift both graphically and to its world building and storytelling.
