As much as I love that older game are getting ported I just can't recommend paying $25 for this game. Wait for a sale.

[strike]Emulated[/strike] Played a decent amount of this one a while ago If you like the lvl1 dungeons in the other Mystery Dungeon game, it's that (those are personally my favorites) It's the origin of the Mystery Dungeon games; it shows, but it's far from being bad or basic or boring It is the game you can play 1000 times after all
It has serious responsive issue on UI and input. The original Super Famicon version released in 1993 was so much better and responsive in all aspect compared to this garbage. It's probably a complete remake from scratch without relying on Super Famicon ROM and emulator. Made with UE5. Run on Proton too. # Pros * It's released # Cons * Diagonal movement key has horrible delay. * A button to face nearby enemy has horrible delay. * Message skip has horrible delay * Level up messages take forever to exhaust and you can't move * Monster spawn algorithm is probably different * Dungeon generation algorithm is different and it generate floor on top of character against original developer's design See: https://news.denfaminicogamer.jp/projectbook/dungeon#i-4 * On transitioning floor, it buffer key input(How and why? This isn't the Street Figher!) so if you input something while transition, Torneko moves according to the buffered key input All the original designs, a tiny design difference that significantly improve QoL , reduce the unnecessary stress on dealing with UI and input, are not there. Guess what? The former Chunsoft, currently Spike Chunsoft isn't involved on developing this game at all. If you want to play real Mystery Dungeon, developed non other than the Spike Chunsoft, original developer of Torneko's Mystery Dungeon, play their latest game. Conveniently 50% off sale right now. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2178480/Shiren_the_Wanderer_The_Mystery_Dungeon_of_Serpentcoil_Island/ Or Touhou Genso Wanderer -Reloaded- https://store.steampowered.com/app/931500/Touhou_Genso_Wanderer_Reloaded/
The original Mystery Dungeon, hard, addictive, and endless in the fun department. Definitely worth picking up if you're into Roguelikes.
Torneko's Mystery Dungeon on modern platforms has been my white whale for the longest time and now that it's finally here I'm sad to say that this is not the port I was hoping for. It's buggy and there's a noticeable audio buffering that occurs. It's sluggish but more than that the game likes to stop you in your tracks because you have to wait for lines to print in the info log before taking any action. Even spamming A after killing a single enemy takes a few seconds before you can get back to exploring which is kind of annoying. The original SFC version is not nearly this slow. There are also small QoL irks that I wish were present like separating item types such as equipment into separate menus or not spending an identify scroll when used on an unidentified item that apparently "Torneko already knows" is base quality. Young Yangus Mystery Dungeon soon, hopefully.
Torneko is back, baby, and he's seen worse in these halls than your scorn over some very easily patchable problems. Undeniably, there is something wrong with the text rendering right now where it feels gameplay is interrupted for longer than it should, particularly if you are like me and have played 6,000,000 hours of this game on the Super Famicom. for me, it is largely a muscle memory issue. But I do find the pushback against this largely overblown and it has not affected my play in any real, meaningful way minus one time a lump shaman warped me into a room with a pit that threw me down into a monster lair because i missed a diagonal input due to the shoulder button delay. If anything, it's just had me in the meantime play a fraction of a second slower. For now, I genuinely think this is fine. If anything, it is felt more acutely by the game's starting tutorial dungeon, which provides you with on-screen descriptive text for just about anything you pick up or any interaction you have. It's slow, it's annoying, and it is also more or less the identical amount of slow and annoying as that dungeon is in the original SFC title. A game speed and text speed option would go a long way to making this game feel as snappy as it should, but you can and should still play Torneko's Mystery Dungeon. All in all this is still my funny little game with my funny little guy Torneko. Torneko deserves your love, and more Mystery Dungeons should be made. I think it is dramatic to say the current issues with this game at launch are a dealbreaker, a disservice to the property, game-ruining, or that this is a quick cashgrab (it's extraordinarily funny to think anyone in charge of marketing would find remaking this game to be a cashgrab. listen to yourself). The experience is there and will only be better with a simple tuning patch to fix the text rendering and half-second delay on diagonal movement. The roguelike stories are still there, the jank of the original is preserved, those bizarre and garish textures look really funny in HD2D and I kind of love that, that dogwater soundtrack is still there (though it is funny how they've rehabilitated some of Sugiyama's work here with gentler instrumentation: let this man's legacy live as it should. as dogwater. i hate that man.), and it still really sucks when you think you have enough arrows to kill a magician (a legerdeman???) from across a room but you miss every single one of your shots and then get sleep-looped to death. It's still that game, and it's good. Far and above, the strongest added feature of Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is the ability to turn the music off. You'll never catch me listening to Koichi Sugiyama on purpose. (disclosure: this user's opinions may be reflective of receiving an Abacus and +3 Shield on floor 2 of her first non-tutorial run.)
