its very nostalgic and has a good mission in mind while also having some sandbox elements to it
This isn't going to be much of a helpful review, but I find this game fun and inspired by Minecraft.
Incredibly frustrating. The blueprint system is INFURIATING and requires you to place pixel-perfect blocks with no margin for error. The battle system is basic, lame and clunky, there's no mini map or quest markers, and there is an insane amount of backtracking for no reason. Also, your villagers basically do nothing. Disappointed.
If you like 3D voxel builders such as Minecraft, and also like RPG stories, this game might be for you. Especially if you like Dragon Quest in general, and its vibes. This is a cute and fun game, with a surprising amount of build customization, and if you like making cute buildings and villages, that alone might make this game worth your time. There's also an interesting storyline with fun characters, and some combat and puzzles in here too. I started this series with Dragon Quest Builders 2, and while it had more variety in it, I also think that it was a far more grindy and overwhelming game than this one, even though I also enjoyed it and finished it completely. Between the two games, I would say Builders 1 is probably easier for newcomers to get into. My only real criticism is that I wish it had fast travel. The maps aren't huge, but still large enough that not being able to teleport to various locations feels a bit bad. This game is probably worth it on sale to those who like this style of game. What's great about it is that it's only an 800 MB download. Not even 1 Gigabyte total! Which makes sense, as this was originally a PS3-generation game. It looks and sounds great even considering, though. If you're not sure about this style of game, Dragon Quest Builder 2 has a Demo available on Steam. Look for the "Jumbo Demo" on its store page. Edit: Another reviewer mentioned problems with controller support (which I believe, given how complex PC hardware / software is) but I personally have not experienced problems with controller support. I've played this game for 20 hours with a Gamesir T4 Kaleid in X-Input mode with no changes to the Steam App's Controller settings page. It works fine, even the autofire / turbo setting, which I turned on for the "X" button to autoslash to save my fingers from straining. Although to be fair, the turbo option is hardware-specific to the T4 Kaleid, and not something I programmed in Steam Settings. I also didn't have any issues finishing all of DQ Builders 2 with a controller either, although that was on Xbox Game Pass (on PC) to be fair. This game also has keyboard and mouse support, which is decent, but I personally prefer a controller myself.
Best game I ever played. Life changing. Easy to understand and fun to play, and also has amazing lore and characters that I keep coming back for after six years.
