THE BAD: - There are camera issues when skiing closely together in multiplayer, which is all the more regrettable for the fact, that the multiplayer co-op challenge is set up around gaining group bonus for doing just that. - There is no in-game map and no free-cam option, so it is often difficult to get a good perspective on your position relative to the checkpoint, which I feel is quite a big oversight, bordering on laziness. THE GOOD: Apart from these quite glaring - but not game-breaking - flaws, everything else about this game is every bit as cozy, chill, atmospheric and enjoyable, as the media for it promises. Lots of replayability perfecting your route or venturing out to discover new routes and corners to cut.. Very recommendable!
reminds me of when i was a child playing that ski game, highly recommended
What a nice surprise this game turned out to be. The visuals, sound effects and theme are very crisp and calming, but the gameplay itself is very tight and precise. At first I would repeatedly fall or hit rocks, but doing the solo time trials has helped get a lot better at it, and it's a lot of fun now to perfect my execution and to explore all the shortcut possibilities in the maps. Although there's a limited amount of maps (4 biomes with 4 maps each, and 2 variants per map, along with a new biome if you purchase the DLC), they all contain a lot of hidden paths and skips, and change wildly depending on the slope, and gamemode ; so far I still don't feel bored of playing these maps. There's a map editor in beta for this game, which will be a fantastic addition once it becomes multiplayer-compatible. I very much recommend trying the game out, it's great value and my friends and I play it together a lot.
I can't vote this negative because the devs don't deserve it, but this is a negative review. The simplicity of Lonely Mountains: Downhill was lost with this game. While that game had a simple control scheme of acceleration, braking, boosting and steering, this one introduces two trick buttons, a duck button that needs to be used alternatively with acceleration depending on the steepness of the slope (which feels confusing since if you press the wrong one, you may suddenly come to a full stop), and the right analog stick for spins. It's unintuitive and overwhelming, especially since you need to move from the face buttons to the analog quickly to spin. The simplicity of the menus is also gone and in its place is one of the most convoluted, unintuitive, crowded, and inconsistent UIs I have ever seen in a game. It's not pretty and it's not functional--it's just confusing. Which is mind-boggling considering how simple and effective the previous game's was. Maybe I'll give it another shot again later, but I'd rather play Downhill, which I love and have put almost 60 hours into. This one has too much going on and it just feels stressful by comparison. For anyone looking for a meditative snowboarding/skiing experience, try Steep.
It's not possible to be positive about Lonely Mountains Snow Riders unless you appreciate bad design and enjoy hurting yourself. Every single time I've played this game, 100.0% of the time, I've quit in frustration, even when I had success, usually within 5-10 minutes. It's a good thing the game autosaves when you ALT-F4 because otherwise I'd never make any progress. There are numerous reasons why this developer's games are frustrating, sloppy messes, and why Snow Riders is no exception. The camera is the obvious first choice: the developer choice of a detached "TV style" tracking camera makes logical sense for a downhill skiing game but half the time you can't tell where you are relative to the scenery. It's a complete nightmare and borderline useless 50% of the time. After basically every person who ever bought this game or their previous one about downhill mountain biking complained about how horrible and restrictive this camera was they finally decided to add a traditional 3rd person camera, and while this is a much better option, they didn't add the required visual aids to give you some indication of where the courses want you to go. At least the TV camera was preconfigured to lead the player (most of the time) towards the path, so even without visual aids you had some clue about where to go. But with the 3rd person camera you rarely have any idea whatsoever because you literally haven't got a clue. Almost every racing/speed game in existence, no matter what approach, has visual clues to tell you where you should go, and where you can go. Flags, arrows, color marks, UI indicators, a rally driving style voiceover guide, whatever, but they all have SOMETHING. But this developer eschews all past precedent, logic, and common sense and includes absolutely nothing, so no matter what camera mode you choose you've usually got no idea where you should go or even where you can go. This is monumentally frustrating, and the developer's snarky loading screen tips merely add insult to injury: "Learning the courses by heart separates the beginner from the experts" is just rude and condescending because it's implying that the game is full of experts and you're that one lonely beginner who just doesn't get it. Yeah, ok, except these games have sold incredibly poorly and I've repeatedly got top 500 global leaderboard scores without achieving the lowest tier objective score on a map. The loading screen message "More than 50 people have contributed to this game" just isn't the brag you think it is. edit: and after playing Credits Mountain I now realize you meant 50 people WORKED ON this game, not contributed money to its development, and holy **** that's so embarrassing I barely even know where to begin, because I've played at least two dozen 1-2 person projects IN THE PAST YEAR that were far better than this game. Why on earth would you brag that more than 50 people made this low budget, low poly, indie looking, poorly selling, badly designed pile of smeg? Do you have absolutely no self awareness AT ALL? What in the actual **** is wrong with you? A lot of the moves in the game don't work when you need them to, or randomly just aren't repeatable (and yes I know the game is unplayable with keyboard, I played the game with an xbox 360 controller). One time I was retrying the same stretch of a level and after about the 10th time in a row I suddenly could no longer gap a jump I had been doing repeatedly without fail for the past 10 retries. No explanation, no clue why it stopped working, it just did, and that wasn't the only time something like that happened. Sometimes the game's physical logic just breaks without warning. I also never could get reversals to work consistently. They work whenever they want to work, and most of the time they infuriatingly refuse to work, ramming you backwards into rocks at high speed. But the underlying death of this game is the design philosophy and balance: Take one recent session I had where I did a positively fantastic stunt run, scored a ton of amazing daredevil "lucky to still be alive" backflip combo grabs on tiny jumps that I somehow landed, landed a crazy 1080 combo where only a 720 should have been possible, stunted every available jump or gap that I know exists on that particular course, only fell twice during the entire run, finished what was by far my best stunt run ever in the entire game, scored another top 500 global leaderboard... and literally burst out laughing when I didn't even clear the lowest course objective score. That about sums this game up right there. Badly designed, frustrating, and insulting. Technically the graphics are low poly and overall sub-par but the real time shadows are decent and the tessellated snow isn't bad. I had no problems with 54:9 @ 6040x1080 on a 5070 ti in terms of setup, even though the hud and menus aren't centered this isn't a big deal because you rarely have to look at them. The performance is likewise generally good, though there is unplayable stuttering on several of the courses in multiplayer. There is no music and the sounds are spartan minimalism. The load times are fraudulent. You cannot convince me a game that looks this simple and has levels this small takes far, far longer to load than almost every other game I play. Hell, it even takes a long time to load the main menu and there's NOTHING THERE. First load takes forever, course load takes forever, and returning to the main menu takes forever, and I simply don't believe it. If the load times aren't fake these are the worst coders in history. And that's entirely possible, because several times I got course objective awards when I clearly did not meet the score or crash requirements, and despite owning all the DLC and having English as my system language selected in the options menu the game's main menu has never stopped trying IN CHINESE to sell me DLC that I already own. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ This brings me to another point: Lonely Mountains Snow Riders is extremely overpriced. There's simply not 25 dollars worth of content here. This is at most a 10 dollar game, even if you include the dlc and the supporter pack. The math simply doesn't math. To take one example: Driftwood is a much better game, has more content, and costs less. At 10 dollars this would still be a thumbs down but it wouldn't be so emphatic. At 5 dollars I'd forgive a lot of the flaws and appreciate the positives, probably even give it a thumbs up. But at 25 dollars for the base game, not including the DLC or the supporter pack, I am simply insulted. There's no reality where this game gets a positive review from me with these flaws and at this price, which is disappointing because they got the feeling right. The simple mechanics of skiing are enjoyable. It's just that nothing else about this game is, and that's a shame. Allow me to conclude this review with a phrase I used more than any other when speaking about Lonely Mountains Snow Riders, a phrase which eloquently and tactfully summarizes the way I feel about it: **** this game.
A racing game where actively withholding information on upcoming obstacles by fixing the camera to a ridiculously small section of the track seems to be the point. Bold design decision, from the current review score it seems to work for some people, but for me at 32:9 screen it certainly didn't. Might be that the devs didn't account for that ratio, and there's even less info to go on than normal resulting in even more crashes, but I didn't think it was any fun that way. Refunded, not worth the bother of that cam even at 40% off.
Very pretty, controls feel good, plenty of challenge too if you want it. Lovely game to chill out with.
It's very hard, but it stops being frustrating when you stop trying to win, and take opportunities to explore your mountain and figure out ways forward without worrying about meeting challenges. Treat it like a real ski hill...your first days are all about finding your stashes, and you won't set any records if you don't even know the way down.
