While it's not like the previous entries of the series, I personally don't understand the hate. I've enjoyed this and it's definitely worth picking up on sale.
Honestly i had a huge essay written for this detailing everything i ended up not liking about the game, but ill just condense it down to the fact that the entire game feels like it was made by a team of HR reps and i couldn't even bring myself to finish it. It's sterile, bland and boring.
Лучше, чем в Dungeons&Dragons: Dark Alliance, но гараздо хуже чем в God of War.
This game doesn't suck because it's "woke". It sucks because the voice acting , story and design left me so disappointed that I just played DA2 instead.
Dragon Age Veilguard is a third person action RPG where player character Rook must assemble a team of heroes to stop a pair of Elven gods from destroying the world. Dragon Age Origins is my second favourite game of all time (after Witcher 3), however I thought DA2 and Inquisition were disappointing in various ways. I also replayed Inquisition recently to prepare for Veilguard.
Gameplay (medium quality)
• Character creator is incredibly detailed, and I think I spent about an hour adjusting all the sliders to get my Rook looking just right. • Combat is entertaining and I enjoyed it for most of my playthrough. However, its not really what I wanted from a party based RPG. It doesn’t feel tactical at all for various reasons, and is much more action focused. • Playing as a mage, the combat felt like a third person shooter, and actually very similar to Mass Effect. Enemies have the same colour coded health bars – red for health, yellow for armour, blue for barrier, while spells/abilities for Rook and companions are selected from an ability wheel which pauses the action. Your companions don’t have their own health bars so they can’t get knocked out, which feels more like an action RPG. • Spells cost mana instead of having individual cooldowns. Most spells cost 100 mana and you start with 100 maximum mana, which meant that even though Rook can have 3 spells equipped, I could only use 1 spell at a time. Rook also has a laser beam attack and a defensive shield, which both cost mana, so using them prevents spellcasting until mana regenerates. Eventually, through the skill tree and equipped gear bonuses, I did manage to get up to 250 mana, allowing me to use spells more frequently, but it took a long time to get there. • Similarly, companions also have 3 abilities equipped, but using 1 puts them all on cooldown, which extremely simplifies the tactics. • There’s no sense of tactical positioning at all. DAO was very tactical, as I would try to use melee specialists to keep enemies away from mages/archers. Unfortunately, Bioware abandoned that style of combat starting from DA2. I felt like most of the time, every enemy in a fight would exclusively focus on attacking me, even when I ordered companions to target a specific enemy. Again, I was the party’s mage, and I couldn’t stand still for more than a couple of seconds because I’d have multiple melee enemies in my face, and multiple ranged enemies spamming projectiles at me, causing me to have to constantly dodge all over the place while wondering if my companions were doing anything at all. • I wouldn’t say the combat was too hard (playing on adventurer/medium difficulty), just quite stressful. I only died a few times, mostly while attempting to fight side quest bosses who were clearly labelled as a few levels higher than me, and were more easily defeated when I returned at the appropriate level. • Veilguard’s combat is more enjoyable than Inquisition’s though, as the enemies are much less spongy and usually die quicker. • Outside of combat there’s a good amount of exploring to do. At first, some levels feel like linear corridors, however a few maps that you’ll return to regularly will gradually open up into much larger areas with puzzles to solve and loot chests to find. Puzzles are often simple but fun, involving using crystals or wisps to create bridges, open doors or disable forcefields. • I like that collecting duplicate weapons, armour and other items upgrades them with better stats and passive bonuses. This is better than other RPG loot systems where you find loads of useless trash. However, its a shame that most loot can only be equipped on Rook, with each companion having their own unique gear. So many legendary/unique items were left gathering dust in my inventory.
Story (medium quality)
• Story is mostly well written and features several interesting companion characters and a couple of familiar faces from previous games. I liked my version of Rook based on my dialogue choices. • Main quests are often exciting and the final chapters felt like we were leading an epic scale final battle, including a Mass Effect 2 style suicide mission where your companions could die if you make the wrong choices. • However, the major negative in the story is that the villains just weren’t very interesting to me. I was expecting Solas to be the main villain (I think for most of its development this game was going to be called Dread Wolf), which would have been very interesting as one of our companions from Inquisition. And while I was ultimately satisfied with his ending, I think it was a mistake to sideline him for most of the game in favour of two new villains who got very little screen time to make me care about them. (Just like Corypheus was barely involved in DAI). Its not enough to just tell me that these two gods are evil (which other characters will do, repeatedly, in so many conversations), I have to actually see it to feel it. I’ll never forget how much I hated Loghain in Origins. • In addition to the main quest, each companion has their own multiple stage personal quest, and there are lots of side quests to help other factions and civilians. • There were always multiple new companion dialogues every time I returned to the team’s lighthouse base. • Voice acting is excellent. • Unfortunately the dialogue often feels just a bit too nice and jokey. You’re never allowed to actually disagree with a companion about anything. • During character creation you’ll select a background story for Rook. I wish they were unique playable prologues like in Origins. There were several times that other characters referred to the events of Rook’s background, but I didn’t know what to say because it all happened off screen. • I want my own pet griffon.
Technical (medium quality)
• It took me 68 hours to complete the story and all side quests. • Performance was mostly smooth with minimal noticeable stuttering, most settings on high and DLSS quality in 1440p. • Environment graphics look fantastic, as your journey will take you through city streets, forests, stone ruins, underground caves and crypts, all of which can be covered in disgusting blight growths. • The game only crashed one time, so its extremely stable. • Controls are fully rebindable and work great with mouse and keyboard. • There’s a graphical bug where several small dots can be seen on a character’s hair, which I noticed in many scenes throughout the game. I believe this relates to how lighting sources interact with strand hair. I didn’t want to disable strand hair because when its not bugged (for example, darker scenes), it looks really good, especially the way long hair flows naturally over the top of armour without clipping. • I wish I could stop companions from constantly telling me during combat that enemies are “attacking from range” every few seconds. I can see the on screen indicator of incoming projectiles. Also, stop telling me to move out of the way when an enemy uses an AOE attack, because I can see the massive red danger indicator on the floor. This kind of design feels aimed at a 5 year old who is playing their first videogame. • Side quests repeatedly take you back to the same locations multiple times which can feel a bit repetitive, although its not as bad as that one cave from DA2.
Recommendation
Dragon Age Veilguard is a good game, but its not really a great RPG. Its definitely worth playing as long as you can accept what it is. Origins is still by far the best Dragon Age game, but at least Veilguard is better than Inquisition and DA2. If Bioware ever make another Dragon Age, every member of the team should be forced to play Origins from start to finish to understand what made it great.
Ola galerinha!
NEGATIVES - Writing: All the dialogue is either bland, stupid, or cringey. There are (too frequent) attempts at humor, but I don't remember finding a single thing funny. - Characters: Each character is one-dimensional. The writers chose *one* trait for each character and repeated it endlessly. - Tone: The tone is bizarre. I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to take things seriously or not. The companions feel like caricatures, and their frequent "humorous" remarks undercut any serious moments. - Art: The cartoony art style makes it even harder to take things seriously - Personality: For the most part, your dialogue choices don't matter. You can be supportive, flippant, or serious, but everyone reacts the same no matter what you say. POSITIVES - Combat: This was the only thing that kept me playing. I played as a mage, and I thought that the combat was just the right mix of frantic button mashing and strategic planning. - Boss fights: These were the highlights of the game. Some of the bosses are a little spongey, but when your character gets to the highest levels the boss fights become more manageable. - Character quests: Unlike other Bioware games, where you pretty much have to do just one character-specific mission to earn their "loyalty", each character in Veilguard makes you go through about 6 missions to complete their story lines. It adds some stakes and some variety, forcing me to go on missions with characters that I ordinarily wouldn't. In all, it's an acceptable game. It just pales in comparison to other Bioware games. I would only recommend it to someone who just absolutely needed closure to Solas' story after Dragon Age Inquisition.
