I liked the original version of Doors of Insanity better. It had multiplayer verses and character customization. You could change your characters' gender, and hairstyle, along with their skin tone, and their face. This one is missing those things, and the few improvements don't really make up for that. It feels like a downgrade, it is a downgrade in some ways. I liked Doors of Insanity better before it was "ReOpened"
I'm doing a quick, day after release review to buff the rating because this game deserves love. It is your standard roguelike card battler but it also has its own signature flair with the artistic style and dialogue. I like how you actually go through doors in a 3D environment instead of clicking a drawing on a map of where you want to go, which has become overused in this genre. The perk system is also very deep and provides nearly limitless run customization. You choose up to 5 perks to go into a run, and you have dozens of perks to unlock and choose from. Not all perks are buffs. Some debuff you in exchange for varying rewards and modifiers when you start your run. The only flaw I see in this game is card progression, but its more of a personal preference thing. A lot of these types of games have you slowly unlock new cards one at a time, but in this game you unlock entire decks of cards at once, with each deck in the game (of which there 7) having a central theme which is equivalent to unlocking a new character class. It sounds good in theory but it takes the mystery of what cards you can unlock away because you can preview decks before unlocking them. Though, if you're not a fan of games that have you slowly unlock cards one at a time you will enjoy this quality of life change. Final thing, you get to choose three of the seven themed decks to be in the card pool for your run, so unlike Slay the Spire you can actually multiclass for some fun combos! I did not mention every mechanic in the review so that you can enjoy some surprises, so go ahead and try the game!
Overall: 8/10 Great. Graphics: 10/10 • The art direction is insane. • Memes are well done. • Cards are cool. • The protagonist feels a bit bland compared to how colorful everything else is. • The game over scene is funny, bud. Gameplay: 8/10 • Another polished roguelike deckbuilder. Audio: 8/10 • The boss theme is crazy, super intense.
I don't always play Doors of Insanity. but when I do, I prefer the original. ★★☆☆☆
After having put 60+ hours into this game, I think I can say that I like it. It is a fine place-holder until StS2 comes out. To begin with, the graphics are great, but that's not why I play these types of games. I'd be happy with pixelated cards and characters as long as the game is fun. The cards: A wide assortment of cards and play-styles are available. I have been able to play a bunch of different ways and the replay value is solid. This game makes it easy to get the build you are looking for on any run as long as you have the patience. The only downside is that the game seems really short. I've been through it a dozen or so times and each time I finish 48 I am left with a feeling of "Okay, now what?" We jump to Ray Charles' skeleton jamming away on the ivories and an option to look at my stats. I would really like to be able to keep going. Maybe something along the lines of StS's infinite ladder where you start from the beginning with tougher enemies? That would be my only complaint. I want more end game content. Hopefully the devs keep going with the ladder or give us an option to keep going with a New Game + option. In any event, I would highly recommend this game if you are a fan of StS. It's going to take a little bit of getting used to. The first couple times going through I was getting smoked by some of the bosses, but now I am at the point where nothing can stop me! Pick up this game and see for yourself.
Many fixes over the old version but this still, unfortunately, isn't it
I thought this is just another deckbuilder game But I'm having so much fun with this I wish the animations are faster, especially for the summons and attack would also be cool if it has a workshop
I feel bad giving a thumb down because in my (negative) review of the previous version I advised the dev to remake the game and make it a better deckbuilder. To my surprise, they did revise it, but unfortunately they went in the opposite direction they should have. Now they made it less of a roguelite, and more like a streamlined game. You can unlock builds, but they're rather boring and with there are very few variations over a handful of builds. At the start of each run, you have to answer the same pointless questions again and again and it's boring. They made the game very comfy to play, compared to the first version, but it's not exciting enough to keep at it.
Good stuff, some rough edges still left here and there but overall surprisingly good depth, can clearly tell the devs look up and respect a lot games like StS, hearthstone etc.. Good value for the price, also this review might be bias considering im a dev but you know, I'd buy my own game ; D Reminder: RIGH CLICK on card and enemies to get buff/debuff explained Cheers
