At this point, me complaining about mediocre Exit 8 clones is as much of a cliché as the bombardment of clones itself; and while Distorted Hallways is exactly what I thought it would be, it's missing one key thing: fun. As bad or weird as the other games might've been, I certainly wasn't bored while playing; but getting enough review material for this game felt like homework. Distorted Hallways is just doing the most basic definition for everything here; in terms of its location, scares, and the production values in general. So.. oh no your math test is late but the school is turning all spooky aaaaaa gotta go. After his love of the Brady Bunch caused the unexpected and very tragic death of J. C. Sprinkles in late 2006, the Sprinkle family was in complete shambles; so much so, in fact, that the other son Logan was taken into foster care; and eventually sent to Japan as an exchange student. And while he thought it was really cool and “bussin” for a while, Logan soon found he had an extremely hard time keeping up with his schoolwork; and whenever he gets too stressed, his mind starts playing tricks on him, reliving every moment leading up to his little brother's passing... now, if you're wondering, no. that's NOT the game's story. The game has absolutely no explanation for any of the events that happen
(I mean, is it even really necessary?).
All that's important is that you're trapped in a Japanese school building, it is getting very scary, and that you love the Brady Bunch. The gameplay is identical to the countless Sp0T THe DiFFErEnCe horror games out there: you're in a constant looping location. If everything looks normal, keep moving forward; but if anything, and I mean anything, looks ever so slightly out of the ordinary, TURN BACK. Sounds easy enough, right? well, it is . Unlike most of the other games of the same genre that just went bigger is better
(you're trapped in a three story mansion! memorize every single room and explore each one for clues! every freaking time!)
Distorted Hallways might actually have the smallest location since the original Exit 8. It's just a single hallway. There aren't any extra floors, open classrooms, secret passages, nothing. Just a relatively normal and empty school hall; and I really do mean empty. We've got a white-board, a couple of trash cans, a calendar on the wall, aaaannnnnnddddd.... yeah, that's about it. Now, the big fun of Exit 8 style games is finding all the little places the anomalies can hide, following up every “Aha!” moment with an “Aaaagh!!” one ; but every difference here
-including the ones that aren't meant to be scary-
are really kind of obvious. There are really only so many ways you can change one poster; and even with the limited props, the white-board is oddly very underutilized. As for the scares, HA! HA HA! Buddy, do you think zombies are scary? If you play this game, you'd better; as half the scares are just very generic zombies teleporting in front of your face. They don't even scream or say anything. Laryngitis zombies! Anyway, that's basically it. Something's wrong at school!
It's either a missing protractor or a dead body!
Spot the difference!! I realize that this was probably made by like one guy on Unreal Engine, but Distorted Hallways leaves a lot to be desired. While definitely not the biggest offender, every single asset looks like it came free off the Unreal store. They look fine, I suppose; but it's all just the utterly generic hyper-realistic-but- actually-not-really kinda look that every other video game has now. Even if you don't care about that, the game just looks dull. The colors look muted and washed out; every texture looks way too clean, and you're going to see the same chair and trash can like fifty times.
(heck, you're going to see everything like fifty times. that's the whole point of these games; but they use the same chairs and garbage in the default layout repeatedly).
Plus, the fact that the school takes place in Japan adds practically nothing to the experience
(this sign has Japanese text over the primarily English message. whoop-dee-doo!)
And the scares are just comedy gold. There are a few good ones, I'll give them that
(the courtyard's fountain spewing blood everywhere was admittedly pretty cool),
but how did you THINK I was going to react when there's a smiling zombie hanging behind the door? Or when like fifteen of those same smiling zombies are hanging on the courtyard tree?
….wow, this guy is really getting his money's worth from that one zombie model.
And like, obvious jumpscares are fine; every game like this has them; but what if you tried something a bit more subtle? You've got all this open space out the window looking into the courtyard, and while you do use it, what if you tried using it a slightly different way? like, you know what would've been really creepy? what if there was just a dude in dark clothing sitting on a bench, staring at you? Not a zombie dude or anything like that, just a mysterious guy sitting outside in the dark watching you through the window. And if you wait long enough, he walks away and goes inside the building. I say without exaggeration, I think that would've been a hundred times scarier than any random zombie showing up. Of course, this game would've been so much better if things actually moved. For whatever reason, everything is completely static; not even all them happy zombies move a muscle. And since none of the monsters don't actually move or anything, you can't die; meaning it's impossible to lose. The game also has no music or even sound effects. The whole experience is just dead silent. No footsteps, no squeaky doors, no noisy clocks, nothing. not even any generic zombie “blleeaahrrghs” or anything. Also, the game runs terribly; with the frame-rate consistently being like fifty below the promised sixty. Also also, my foot got stuck in the door and I couldn't get out. Also also also, Logan did not copy the answers on his geometry quiz, Jimmy is just being a liar head again,
Mr. Electric, send him to the principal's office and have him e x p e l l e d .
Distorted Hallways might be the lowest effort Exit 8 clone I've ever played. The location is one-note and boring, the scares are incredibly generic, and the game runs so poorly half the time that it's actually kind of ridiculous. I honestly had so little to say about the game, that I spent a good chunk of it making up some tragic story involving the Brady Bunch and some kid named Logan Sprinkles . Now THAT would be a basis for a killer game!
I can practically hear a horror-version of the theme song already...
I wanted to like this game as I generally love the interactive anomaly games, but this was just too short and clunky. Even for just $3 I don't think it's worth the price tag as it can be completed in just 10 minutes. My least favorite thing was the way the anomalies were handled. In most games you either turn back and the level resets back in the expected direction or you mark the anomaly. In this one, when you turn back after finding an anomaly, it wasn't clear whether you then had to do the levels backwards or just turn back around and continue. I chose the latter and ended up skipping two levels at once three times in a row. The lack of basic settings was a bit frustrating too. Even something as simple as a mouse sensitivity slider would have been appreciated.
This game might be the first game from this creator but this is an amazing beginning, I have never played a game like this but truly I like this a lot, having a eerie vibe to making sure I get every detail right. I'm excited for the future with this publisher I have a lot of excitement for their next game!

Very much like The Exit 8, I will say it wasn't always clear which direction I should be going if things seemed right once I turned around once, because unlike Exit 8 the map doesn't keep being the exact same direction no matter which side you enter from. Not bad though!
good puzzle game almost made me touch grass ♥♥♥♥ was smacking
Great game great price for the quality of the game. really enjoyed looking for the differences in the rooms. . I wonder how fast i can get through it.
The game at its core is great, I found it really tricky to notice some of the anomalies, to the point where I was mad at myself when I finally noticed. The creepy hallway noise and the dead bodies made me pee my pants a little. I think I cheated the system by going in and out of the doors until reaching level 8, but also beat it fairly. This game gets my "It's alright" approval
