Disaster Arms is a really, really well executed boss rush platformer! Highly recommended for anyone who wants some quick pick-up-and-play fun. Specifically, this is an arcade-style platformer with eight levels, each complete with a ton of boss fights! You play as a soldier with 4 different ranged attacks (and some other powerful and punchy moves). Each of these attacks are unique - you have a long ranged straight shot, a spread shot, a weaker homing shot, and a more powerful short-ranged burst fire shot. Thanks to the differences in each weapon and the boss variety, you have to make conscious decisions on what weapon is the best against each boss. You'll probably fare better using the homing shot against bosses that spam bullets, things like that. Most of the game is centered around, of course, the boss fights. They're all really unique in design thanks to both the enemy variety and the developer's unique art style, and no two bosses feel the same. I haven't beaten the full game yet, but the difficulty curve seems fair so far! I felt like 99% of my deaths were my own fault and not a problem with the game design. You have the option to tune the difficulty to your liking with the game's three difficulty modes. I recommend the Advance Mode difficulty because it puts pressure on you to learn the game's mechanics and boss fights by virtue of having limited continues, but if you don't want to lose progress, Basic Mode gives you unlimited continues. Overall, a really fun experience that I'm excited to play more of to get better and better at the game!
Possibly the most criminally underlooked game of 2025. Disaster Arms is a boss rush run-and-gun with a similar style to Treasure's MegaDrive/Genesis outings. Mechanically it's a pretty comfortable middle ground between Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier in terms of complexity, and I especially like the movement nuances and ignition dash. The game has a surprising amount of teeth to its difficulty, especially in the later Acts but there is an easier mode with unlimited continues and saves for those who need an easier time getting into it.
I picked this game up for the Pure Gaming Action that's highly inspired by the energy of Treasure games, and then vibed with the artstyle so much that after a completion run that left my heart pounding, I actually opened up the Gallery and spent half an hour looking at concept art and "Makings Of" sections. Then I went back to put my name up on the leaderboard, 'cause I had that much fun learning how to REALLY use Geveral's kit. This is a game that oozes love for its inspirations, all the author's childhood doodles and comics that led to this, and the concept of love itself.
I LOVE IT :D It’s a run n’ gun side-scrolling action game. No one needs my analysis of what makes it fun. You’re jumping and shooting! I will say that I really enjoyed the difficulty in this. There are three difficulties: Basic, Advance, and Impact. Advance hits a sweet spot for me where I was never walled by a boss but still felt the climb of steadily improving in skill. Every attack pattern has a relatively easy strategy for staying safe from damage. You can handle Advance if you’ve completed any tough action game by yourself. I haven’t completed Impact but it’s a reasonable step up from Advance that makes those strategies for avoiding damage trickier with more elaborate attack patterns. Also, the concept here for the story and world is good! I’m a sucker for so many of the character archetypes and genre tropes here. You play as Geveral and kill your family (except the autistic older sister). I’d say more [strike]or something accurate[/strike] but a major appeal is watching the story unfold through cutscenes that play between stages. Certain moments in the ultimate confrontation feel so satisfying to watch and makes the climb from the challenge feel worth it. There’s just so much care put into the illustrations and story, and unlocking the concept art to the game was just a nice treat at the end. …I really need to play a Treasure game soon.
A Run & Gun with a heavy focus on bosses, inspired by the likes of Treasure's Alien Soldier. While there are short platforming segments, much of the focus (and danger) is with the 30 or so bosses you'll have to fight your way through to topple Kaisercorp. The game is very skill-based: Geveral has four different types of weapons with different uses/focuses along with a punch that destroys green projectiles, leaving behind energy. There is also a meter that you can charge up by collecting energy - the obvious use is to use a powerful dash attack, but if the meter is filled the dash is maxed at 300%, you'll regain life. This means that you'll want to learn to make the most out of the punch - using it as a parry of sorts - whether that be to ensure a means of regaining health or to get the most out of the dash - especially on the higher difficulties where you only have so many tries. The dash's explosion also has similar properties to Geveral's punch, so smart usage can "refund" most of the energy spent on it. The game has three difficulties. Basic allows you to save, but you'll skip the final sequence (won't spoil it exactly here, but I will say that,
when you see it, you'll understand why it wouldn't work with Basic's limitations
) and the ending will be, well, basic. Advanced gives you four or so lives and takes a more "arcade" stance in that you have to beat it in one sitting (timewise, my successful run took roughly 46-47 minutes according to the game). The ending is more of a proper ending. Lastly, Critical gives you two lives, turns up the boss patterns and starts you off with a shorter life bar (which expands to regular size as you play). At the time of this writing, I haven't finished Critical, though I will say that it still feels fair in its difficulty. There is also a fourth mode that you can unlock
Dolores Mode, which stars the protagonist of Somnabuster, one of PD_CGT's other games
that sits between Basic and Advanced (you can't save, but have infinite continues). The unlock method is pretty simple, if non-standard, compared to the other unlocks - it's just a matter of knowing where to look. Overall, Disaster Arms is just a fun game to blast through. It's one of those games that you feel encouraged to get better at and it's easy to replay. The developer is also alert when it comes to bugs, though I only encountered one during my playthroughs
In Dolores Mode, while fighting not!Seven Force, using the broom at the far end of the arena would send you out of bounds, softlocking you until time runs out
and that was before the recent patches, so it may already be solved. Overall, plenty of bang for your buck. Also, I dig the artstyle and recommend the soundtrack.
Cool stuff, great vibe, solid to see the spirit of Treasure live on. Controls (on keyboard at least) feel a bit cumbersome, but otherwise really great. Hope to see more ganes of the developer.
A fantastic side-scrolling boss rush game, much akin to something like Alien Soldier. The challenge is fair, the music is great, and it is a strong contender for something to just pick up and play. Recent patches have given some nice quality of life changes, and there is a mode that gives you infinite continues if the higher difficulties prove too challenging. Had a great time playing it on the Steam Deck.
My personal GOTY for 2025. This is as good as 2d action games come. Saying it's an Alien Soldier like is not productive since very few have played it. Imagine a 2d character action game focused on positioning and strategic usage of multiple weapons you can switch between through a boss gauntlet with levels that mostly exist to get hp back. This game is built to give both casual and experienced players a challenge through its varied difficulty levels. The easiest difficulty gives you unlimited continues to finish the game, but Disaster Arms obviously wants you to play on the higher difficulty levels, which encourage players to fully master the varied mechanics. It truly feels like a 16 bit genesis platformer in ways that many indie games do not, yet it still feels modernized. PD_CGT achieves a balancing act that results in an amazing game. Shoutouts to the small snippets of story that are in the game, which tell an interesting story with nice pathos, similar to Somnabuster. It's a very nice bonus I do not usually expect to get from games such as this.
