Good for its price
As much as I enjoy the style and enjoy playing, I just cannot recommend this game. There's quite a bit of bloat crafting and just wandering around maps killing fairly weak mob enemies only broken up by 2 bosses in the entire game. You spend an hour or so your first couple playthroughs farming out high end equipment just to stomp on the bosses and sweep the game pretty easily. The game lacks a lot in therms of mechanical difficulty and pacing. The Boon alters are far too few to have fun just making crazy combos, only getting at most 6 or so over an entire playthrough. The guns really lack punch and feel pretty klunky to use with long perfect shot timers. The long pull time is only reduced by one mod that completely breaks the game, especially if you add it and phantom bullets to give Derringer infinite mega damage perfect shots. Things go from a headache to completely game breaking instantly - the difficulty curve is like actually falling off a cliff. You need to do a bunch of run throughs just farming the entire game to complete the base content, which for some reason wants you to complete the game four times to complete the story. The multi clears were rewarding in things like Hades because it was challenging and accomplishing to clear the game, but in this is just feels like busy work. You basically max out your kit by halfway through the map and phone it in the back half of the game. The entire game is incredibly unsatisfying and feels very empty. Would not recommend at all.
Dreams of Genesis
I recommend this game purely on the good mechanics, design and cheap price. There are a couple bad things about this game: - There are only 2 bosses (22/11/2025) - Your bounty increases by just waiting around (not bad on it's own but...) - Each run is only so many stages long but good loot is not limited by what stage you're on, the enemies with the materials for the best armor only spawn if your bounty is high enough, so if you want better stuff on the stages you can wait around on the first stages to get better loot on the next stages. - There are a number of dino's you need to spawn for a full set of armor, but each stage only has 1-2 types and they're not guaranteed so you sometimes end your run missing an armor peice because Ankylosaurus didn't spawn. - You can lock yourself out of the "Great friends: Ask Little Thump's help 50 times" achievement because to get Thump's help you need to pay him to upgrade a building during a run, but you can make it so your camp is 100% upgraded from the start of every run and he has no function if your camp is maxed out. - Thump still spawns even if your camp is fully upgraded, I had a run where he spawned 3 times in a row despite my maxed out camp. - Shotguns cannot use the mod that makes perfect shots not consume ammo. (yes it would be broken but come on) - You can almost have every material in the game in your backpack once it's fully upgraded, making the stash almost useless besides the 4-5 mat's you can't hold if you hoard everything.
Fun game
I don't usually review games, but this is one that I feel like isn't getting much attention and I really enjoyed. I got it on sale for $7.50 (USD) after playing the demo for 90 minutes or so after the theme piqued my interest. I have about 12 hours in the game and have just 'beat' it for the first time. The game is a very simple concept that does a nice job of blending a roguelite and a survival crafting game. The meta progression is permanently unlocking tools and workstations, which feels good and fixes one of the most annoying parts of a lot of survival games. The combat is pretty good and has a surprising amount of mastery and build crafting involved in the form of weapon mods and armor. The things that I think aren't ideal are the amount of time per run, no save on quit, and the in-run progression being a little inconsistent. The runs take 60-120 minutes, which can be quite long, kind of like slay the spire. That might be fine with you, but the lack of save on quit is a bit irritating. The game only saves when you enter a new map, which is pretty annoying as you start out and maps take 20 or so minutes to fully explore and clear (this does get better as you learn the game a bit more and can move through maps faster). I also think the progression is a bit uneven. Earlier maps are more important and take longer to gather an initial base of resources and start crafting armor and improving your weapons and tools. Later maps can be largely ignored as you push to the final boss as you likely already have your weapons and armor maxed out. All these issues are pretty minor and not a big deal. I really recommend this game for the unique blend of genre and gameplay. The setting is cool, the combat is really fun, and it definitely has that 'one more run' feeling to it.
It took me 15 minutes to see what the game thinks of me as a player
'I love the Idea and Artstyle but the Gunplay is absolutely horrid and 15 minutes in, all I am doing is gather wood, Stone, Salt, Meat, Metal, have to watch timers for food and water and barely shot Dinos. The ones I did get to shoot were unreasonably tanky considering them being ♥♥♥♥♥♥ raptors. I dont mind an anky being tanky but if your first enemy, tutorial enemy, tanks 3 to 5 PERFECT Shots and you give me a revolver with 6 Bullets, it WILL FEEL ASS. There is no way around it. Getting bombarded with walls of Text is also not fun. This game absolutely doesnt value my time as an individual. There is absolutely no need for the Stone knife to break after <10 uses. Dude, you already got me to do Survival Game stuff in a ROGUELIKE. Whats the point? I want to get stronger and have fun, not play Conan Exiles. I absolutely got the vibe of: Go to Map, mine and harvest absoutely everything as padding, craft and upgrade and be overprepared for the next run until you maybe fight a boss later on? On the note of combat: You have "infinite" dodges, as long as you carry water with you that slowly replenishes dodges. Out of Water? Out of Dodges. How to get water? Backtrack to a river. Riveting. Enemies have aimlock btw. They will just straight up follow your every move, even through your dodge, so the only way not to get hit is to get behind cover or use the invincibility frame on your character to actually dodge the shots. Youre not dodging mate, your getting invincible for a split second there, the enemies are perfectly capeable of 100% locking onto you and not miss a single attack if you missmanage your dodge. It just is frustrating when enemies dont ever lock in onto a position and are able to miss. Whats the point of limiting my dodges on a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ timer AND stamina Bar to limit the only way of dodging Bullets? Do you want me to have fun or not!? This game will be 90% grinding and 10% fighting and the fighting that does happen is going to suck ass. This might appeal to people who are in it for the grind but I really cant be bothered to have Inventory Management, Crafting, Item breakage, Effect Timers, Valheim Food System together with perfect Dodge, Reload, Shot AND a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ weapon to start with.
