There's the bones of a great game here. Here's the main problems I see preventing it from getting there currently. I'll be drawing a lot of comparisons to Balatro since this game takes so much inspiration from it. First, I concur with the other commenters that luck is handled much more poorly here. Most upgrades include some sort of random effect, and after only a couple games I found that they made my outcomes worse on average - but again, entirely up to chance. With Balatro, it's up to luck which jokers appear in the shop, but for the most part you know what their effect will be. Here, that isn't the case, and it makes for an experience that can be frustrating and not feel particularly skillful. Next, the actions you're taking in-game need some work. Balatro has more skill and active thought during hands, between the processes of playing certain hands, discarding intelligently, and often moving jokers/economy management. With this game, you're spamming one button for three innings. It's not boring, but improvement here would really elevate the game. (It also doesn't help that offense generally increases over the course of a run; it's really not very fun doing nothing but spamming one button for the duration of an 18-14 slugfest.) Finally, there's not very many upgrades and they often aren't very interesting. This will come in time, I'm sure, but for now, the thrill of refreshing the shop and hoping for a good joker to show up isn't there. Again, there's potential here, and it's an impressive first effort at which I'm happy to throw $10 - but we badly need more skill and more interesting luck.
Enjoying this so far - very much a game of chance and luck (still learning the concession cards, there's certainly a hint of deckbuilding that I'm seeing) - that allows it to capture the feeling of helplessness that comes with watching your favorite baseball team. Will definitely log plenty of hours in this.
Good little game, but a lot of luck involved with the dice rolls, the concessions are interesting but seem to have more negative impacts than positives on the game play. In saying that though the game is a joy to play.
It's basically a baseball auto-battler. You click a button, wait for a short animation to play, then repeat until game end. No interaction during the game. At least the games are only 3 innings, otherwise it would feel even more tedious. As you're not actively doing anything during the game, an option to speed up the game would help. (Update: ok good, there's a 20-run mercy rule. It's a little weird that it can take effect in the top of an inning, but it makes practical sense here.) The only actual decisions you get to make, from what I can tell, are which cards to buy (or sell), and whether to pay for a refresh of options. To continue with the trend of reviews comparing vs Balatro: you're playing a few hands of Five-card draw and then between rounds you can buy something like common (update: maybe a few uncommon) jokers and basic tarot cards. The graphics, theming, naming, and sound are all fine. It is a "baseball" game. The game mechanics that are implemented do appear to work properly and it seems fairly polished at this point. There just isn't much to the actual game. (Unless I missed something, but based on other reviews, the in-game how to play / glossary, and patch notes, I don't think I did.) Fine for $5-$10, but just know what you're getting. -------- Update: On a "fielder's choice", the defense got the batter out, allowing the runner to advance from 1st to 2nd and leaving 1st open. An actual fielder's choice specifically does not get the batter out. But that's the only blatantly wrong baseball thing I noticed. Update: It's not even a d6d6 table, 2-1 counts as 1-2 for example. So there are only 21 unique rolls, with doubles being half as common.
This is a very fun and cute game, I'm very much enjoy it as a fan of things like roguelites and deck builders, this game has a ton of promise!! I do have some personal feedback that I feel would take the game to the next level for me: This game is obviously made to be luck based, however sometimes I feel it's a bit toooo much luck based. I lost game 1 one time 15 to 0 and you can't augment your deck until after game 1 so it felt like there wasn't much I could do. I do feel that the cards feel a bit underpowered/good cards are hard to find. I feel like most items I see have too many negative impact and not enough positive. With all that said, I'm having a ton of fun. Amazing first game from this new developer and can't wait for more and it's future!
I refunded this after seeing that this major update would be the last. There's some germ of an idea here but I genuinely wonder if the devs sat down and played this for a few hours straight: - hitting the same button hundreds of times with no agency isn't very fun so it's kind of crazy that it isn't already auto-rolling - the animation speed is an absolute slog. Why does a Walk take longer than anything else? - How is it even possible to lose the first match? You haven't even had a chance to influence anything at all, so you're not getting punished for making a bad decision, you're getting punished for playing the game. which makes playing the game feel like a bad decision. - no matter how well set-up your roll outcomes are, they can be completely undone by a few lucky cards from your opponents. - because making good decisions has very little to do with outcomes, your wins rely almost solely on luck. I may as well roll two six-sided dice, wait three seconds, and roll it again until I get two sixes 10 times in a row and then say I won. that's the same game as this. just wait out the astronomical probabilities until things come up your way. Tom Walker's Coin Flip stream: The Game. If they were willing to put more work into this project, something really neat might come out of it, but I'm tearing my hair out at how obvious these flaws are and how unenjoyable the actual experience of playing it is.
fun little roguelike game baseball game. I enjoy the mechanics a lot but i have two suggestions. 1 let us skip spring training, and two either have an active save or a disclaimer that clicking on the menu button will lose your current progress.
Seemed like a fun idea, so I gave this a shot. First of all, immediately charmed by the ducknest games logo when I launched the game. Very cute (possibly drawn by a child) logo that warmed my withered heart. Also made me feel like I was about to play a game that an actual person made, and not some soulless corporation. Anyway, this game is a really fun time-waster. It probably helps if you actually like baseball (I do!) but it isn't entirely necessary to enjoy this game I don't think. You do need to be fully aware that everything in this game is completely RNG/luck based. I'm almost positive it's impossible to win 10 straight games in a row, but I'm having fun trying. There are cards and concessions you can purchase after wins that can help you out, such as items that turn one of your double-play outcomes into a single out. You can't completely remove negative dice outcomes, I don't think, but also that'd be boring and the game would never end. But you can lessen negative outcomes with concessions. You can also screw yourself over with positive outcomes too... "Change one random outcome to a Single" replaced my one Homerun outcome with a single... but I actually made it to game 5 on that run, so it wasn't a killer. If you're just looking for something light and casual to play, this is a good option. It's like, $7 too which is nice. Pretty much the gameplay is just clicking a button, but it can be so exciting, and also so soul crushing: The exhilaration of crushing an opponent 24 - 5 The hype of crushing a walkoff homer in extra innings The hype of hitting a walkoff moonshot in extra innings, but the opponent has a 10% chance to turn your homer into an out and it procs and your soul dies a little... and then they score 10 runs next inning... Losing 8 straight game 1's in a row and wondering why you're doing this... It's almost like watching your favorite team in real life. Nothing you do actually matters, they let you down alot. And even when they are doing exceptionally well, you don't trust em and know they're about to collapse in spectacular fashion
Only $10 for something that is very well-done. There's a really fun game in here. It's very addicting, and I constantly want to start a new run once I lose. The upgrades are easy to see with the effects they give. They combo well. For example, I had built up multiple combinations to get a triple, and right before the last game, there I got an upgrade to turn all triples into homeruns. I ended up winning the final game 79-9. So there are some game-breaking (in a good way) combinations as with the best of rougelikes. My only critique, as others have mentioned, is the inability to do much else in the 3 innings of play than roll the dice. Hopefully, any updates will bring something like a way to track how far into the series you're in. Very fair price. Well worth it.
Very cute game and I enjoy the art style.
