About
On a street so lonely, in a town so quiet, stands a mall no more, but a place for the old and unwanted, in plain sight to all, but very few enthralled.
Yet in this dimness, a strange sight does appear, the building's windows aglow, as if to cheer, amidst the darkness, they shine so clear, a beacon of hope, dispelling fear.
When night is broken, the end is awoken, but until then, don't run too fast, don't be too rash, Or your demise might arise. That, I am certain.
Horror Cartridge Collection is a series of short form horror games in the PSX style, with each game (Cartridge) offering a unique experience with different gameplay mechanics, styles and stories all connected by the mall.

Reviews
Break Even Games, run by a single developer, brings you at this time 7 different games with varying length, and a small hub world. Another PSX styled horror collection, for the most part, is it any good you wonder? Yes, its great. Every game features its own gameplay style, has hand crafted assets, and theres several endings for each, along collectibles, and notes to find. From controlling a computer to launch missiles, to mining diamonds, to searching for fuel on an empty road, just for an angry pensioner to steal your teeth for lying. You wont be disappointed. Every ending, note, and collectible is listed once you enter a game, and if you are stuck, you can check for hints. Either replay and explore on your own, or check the hints. What a simple yet fantastic little feature that has completionists freed from frustrations. Every game has even little modifiers you can select before starting. Like disabling the intro, instant mining, or just an enhanced timer, if you arent doing well under pressure. Really not much bad to say, two of the games maps can be annoying to navigate. The Mine has a lot of paths where you end up just looping forever until you find the right one, at least at the first section. Endless Storage is not that bad to navigate, but every time you progress some shutters close, while others open, so you are always forced to find a different path. Im sure thats the general idea behind the game, the entity toying with the player, but replaying it was just no fun at all. Cant wait for updates and new games to sink my teeth in, already hyped to see what game ideas we see the next time. Thank you Break Even Games, for providing me with a copy, much appreciated! I've made a few collections in my day and I gotta say, I really like this one. My favorite feature is the developer's commentary. I really enjoy going through and learning about the thought process behind the games included. The 7 games included at time of review are well varied, and I'm excited to see what comes next as they continue to improve their skills and add new games to the collection. The connective tissue of the launcher is the only aspect of this game that feels early access with all the unsolvable puzzles. But you can stick to free play if you don't want to deal with that.
As a guy who played the original DreadXP, I can say "I love this plan. I'm excited to be a part of it!" Bill Murray quotes aside, I like this, it's great. The horror experience is fine, the frame-story of a creepy video store in great, and the understanding that something is gradually creeping up to you is palpable. Plus, if the game is making you pull hairs out, you have dip-switches, so no one can leave disappointed. I enjoyed my visit to the video store and the end of the world! Would end the world again!
Since this is an anthology, I feel I should rate all the games on their own merits.
Out of Gas: Short and simple, and the endings were rather easy to figure out. There were some light puzzle elements (mostly, how not to die) and it wasn't a slog to play through over and over again. Nightmare: Only two endings (one was to simply die) so not a bad one to deal with. Felt a little on the rails, because even though you were on the run from the enemy in maze-like corridors, I never felt like I'd get lost. M.A.D: This one gives only a little guidance, so it's easy to overthink/not notice what you're supposed to do the first few tries. But, I liked that it was all one big puzzle, and in the end I got it all (had to get some help with the last ending, though). Not bad. Warehouse 14: Only one ending to this one, so it felt the most linear of them all. Not bad, and some decent jumpscares. Eternal Storage: Man...this one was aggravating, with a large map to traverse and lots of going back and forth. But, the most annoying for me, was that sometimes the path would change (shutter doors would be up or down) which disoriented me. I found it VERY easy to get lost until I turned up my brightness and negated the light mechanic (sadly, didn't do this until the last 30 min or so). Speaking of the light mechanic: it was more annoying than atmospheric. Not a fan. The story was good, but to get both endings requires you to play from the start (no checkpoints) and it literally took me three tries and 2 hours to get both endings because I got lost so badly the first time playing, and screwed up the second time. Good story, but IMO the weakest (fun-wise) of the bunch. Santa's Workshop: The least "horror" of the bunch. It was also very short, but still had a good amount of fun with the puzzle elements. Not bad, but it did feel lacking something. Just OK. The Mine: Basically, PSX Minecraft. I liked how it tallied up your "score" at the end with how much ore you left the mine with, and it had some decent jumpscares as well. Took a while, but it didn't feel like a slog. Resolve Your Fate: A choose your own adventure type game. I actually really enjoyed this one a TON. It reminded me of reading those old Choose-Your-Own Adventure books when I was a kid, just a little bloodier. I also liked how the whole game was set up and how you have multiple chances to get it right, instead of just meeting your fate and having to start all over. Really nice addition to this anthology. The Long Barrow: Really short, but also fun to play. (Don't make my mistake and pick up an item and think you're done as far as collectibles). Neat little shorter game to fill the space between longer game releases. I think it's a good idea over all. The story was a little flimsy, but it was still fun to play and kind of guess at what was happening, and I will say, noticing things the second time was cool as well. I'll update this with more games as they come out.
Probably my most favorite "horror anthology" game, there's ton of behind the scenes and developer commentaries. Here's my simple rating for each cartridges: (I suggest you to go in blind) Out Of Gas: 8/10 - Simple but creepy, enjoyed the multiple endings, great introduction to the cartridges. Nightmare: 7.5/10 - Pretty trippy and creepy, satisfied with this one. The Mine: 5.5/10 - The gameplay was very repetitive but still worth playing, spooked me multiple times, basically Minecraft but horror. M.A.D: 3/10 - Very complex and confusing, I had to look up for guide and walkthrough since there's no in-game instruction, not a horror game. Warehouse 14: 6/10 - Short and simple, got some good scares, basic story and ending but still worth playing. Santa's Workshop: 8/10 - Very engaging and fun, the instruction note helped me understand how things work, not too scary but I enjoyed this one. Took me few attempts to beat. Eternal Storage: 8.5/10 - My personal favorite, the story and the ending was really great. Some scary and mysterious moments, overall I really love this cartridge. Resolve Your Fate: 6/10 - Very interesting game mechanics with messed up but well written story. I'm usually not a fan of reading paragraphs but the image, multiple choices, and multiple endings made it more enjoyable. Long Barrow: 7/10 - More of creepy than scary, love the dialogues, worth playing for sure. In the conclusion, I'd highly recommend horror game fans to buy this game. It has plenty of decent cartridges with few "boring" ones. In the early access description, the developer mentioned that there will be probably 16+ cartridges (currently 9) at the end of early access which makes the price worth it, if you're still unsure just buy it on sale. :)
