The game is conceptually cool, but it struggles from all the same issues as the original Democracy 3 (no real opponent, flat simulation, being predictable) while failing to make what is essentially base Democracy 3 feel like it's authentically about Africa on any deep level. If it's heavily discounted or free (and you're particularly interested) it's worth it, but definitely not for $15.
Democracy 3 Africa is, as the description states, a "standalone" version of Democracy 3. It opens via a separate launcher and, of course, does not feature any of the nations in the base game. That all being said, this version of the game is cross compatible in terms of your expansions and mods, meaning that a mod or expansion installed for Democracy 3 will work in this game. That's pretty neat, and it lends itself to why I think this version of the game is actually better than the base game in terms of things to do and deal with. On the whole, this game plays exactly the same as the original. No big surprise there. The key differences here are the introduction of a variety of new events, variables, and challenges. Many of these touch on some heavy topics. How they are handled in this game, as well as the accuracy of the simulation as a whole, is debatable; however, I do believe that tackling these things does add a fresh perspective on the more basic suite of challenges in the first game, which are all still present in this game...for the most part. This is not exactly base game plus, but it comes close. As with the base game, I can understand, though, mileage will vary and relatability will also vary with the limited number of countries on offer in both games. Mods make up for this a bit, but the scene is limited and unlikely to expand given that this came out...nearly ten years ago....good god... Anyways, I recommend picking this up on sale and/or in either of the bundles this is included in, but most specifically in the "Total Democracy Bundle." I left reviews on the base game and all of the other expansions as well, if you want to check those out via my profile or through visiting the page. Suffice to say, though, sales remain king.
Game keeps crashing. I wonder if this a high brow joke or if they just can't make a game run.
Honestly, just as garbage as Democracy 3's basegame, so I'll more or less copy-paste my review. There are only two real playstyles: 1. Roleplay an irl party and lose the first re-election, making your progress go down the drain. 2. Raise taxes, pay off ALL of national debt, fund education and healthcare. Good job, you just solved half of the problems a country has and you have a large surplus to solve the remaining problems. There really isn't enough depth to this game.
Gave me a crisis about a debt spiral that I can't get out of. Absolutely soul crushing to be have a high GDP and 30 trillion in debt with 60% of my expenses being just debt repayment. I now truly understand how screwed things can get. 10/10 horribly accurate
