The silent hill touch to this is insane. if you like spooky vibes then this game is the one.
One day we will get the new redesigned version the dev is working on so dont worry its not dead just taking a long time to remake the game. Till than this is still one of the best vr horror game you can buy. Combat takes some time to figure out because sadly blocking with weapon isnt a thing in this build so you can only avoid hits by physically leaning the right moment while slowly inching backwards or just gun down the enemies if you have the bullets to spare but when you figure it out boy it feels good. Cant wait to come back and beat some sunken to death and see the rest of the story.
First off i saw a reviewer say organ quarter is better than this that is in fact ridiculous and false in my opinion this is the real Silent hill VR and This is by far my favorite VR game and it also happens to be the most underrated one as well 8 hours in and i'm realizing how huge this game is and loving every second of game play i see others here complaining about the price in my mind it's well worth it for the amount of time i can get out of it comparing to all these other vr games also these developers seem very passionate about their project and constantly updating i can't praise this game enough it's scary, thrilling, highly detailed and a must have this is the kind of vr experience we should all be supporting in fact i plan on buying it for a family member as well
I was hesitant to purchase a VR headset due to the seemingly lack of games for it, Dement, though still in early access, definitely made it worth. Horror games don't scare me, at least I thought they didn't, that is until I immersed myself into Dement with VR. I'm playing on the hardest difficulty and 6 hours in, still on chapter one. It took me awhile to conquer my fears and press on, but I am steadily making progress, and the progression is fun.
Great indie horror game reminiscent of the Silent Hill series. Recommend playing on easy if not familiar with VR, as I was having a hard time on standard difficulty because I had never owned an Oculus Rift before. Graphics and environments are great, story is engaging, and really draws you in to the environment. Long play time worth the price tag for the amount of hours available in the game.
I, I rate this game 9, I love this game, I'm from China, Pros: the map is huge! Game time is very long, relatively speaking, the price is not expensive, because the game time is very long! It took me 7 hours to finish the first chapter, and the game is very difficult. I like this kind of difficult game, but I recommend the simple mode for new players, especially those who don't speak good English, otherwise you will crash I wish there were more chapters Shortcomings and opinion: there is no Chinese, so I know nothing for the plot, but more importantly, at least the game operating mode localization, to guide the interface, especially the wizard interface, because I play for a long time, just know how to change the cartridge, how to run, and my game difficulty to improve a lot, I didn't know how to play is to look at the strategy, I would quickly change cartridge until chapter 2. In addition, the vibration of flashlight irradiation, some chicken ribs, I can not use this function, but to the subway, I can not find the pass, I found that the need for a flashlight irradiation, which is not very friendly to the new
I wanted to like this. I liked Organ Quarter, and this is a very similar game. In fact, much about the technical presentation is superior. Level design is more detailed, gameplay mechanics more complex, overall more polished in most respects and less janky. However, what the devs of Dement do not understand that the devs of Organ Quarter (Outer Brain) do, is that horror games exist to be scary above and before anything else. Frustration isn't scary. It's the furthest emotion from fear, and the one which does the most to make a player feel fed up and put a game down for good. Some level of challenge is good to ensure the threats are properly threatening, but failing challenges is frustrating. When a horror game frustrates me, it loses whatever grip it had and it's tough to get it back after that. The main problems which took me out of this game were related to enemy design, placement, behaviors, and weapon balance. The basic enemy of this game looks like it came from the Unity asset store. It's the same humanoid spooperman that looks like a dude in a rubber gore suit that's also in every indie horror demo on itch.io and Gamejolt. To be fair, I saw two other enemy designs besides this one and found both compelling, save for the buff butcher apron guy with the chainsaw who was also in Doom 3 & Outlast, guess this was his next gig? Having him stand motionless behind the fence with the red lighting was a nice touch though. Organ Quarter's basic enemy is also a basic grotesque humanoid. Come to think of it, Organ Quarter also has an armless acid spitter like the next enemy level up from the basic one found in Dement. You chose your source of inspiration well, and even improved on many aspects of presentation that were lacking in Organ Quarter, but the result is less than the sum of its parts. It's maddening, not frightening. I expected this to some degree going in, because this is an early access game. I'm also not refunding at this time, for that reason. There's still ample opportunity to tweak enemy design, behaviors, stats and balance. The pipe needs to at least be able to kill a single basic enemy before it can kill you, or there is no reason it should be in the game unless you were to increase the stagger time when you bonk an enemy so you could at least get away. The basic enemy design should be more creative, there should be fewer in the early areas so as to maintain tension, and how the player encounters them should change in order to keep them mysterious and frightening. SOMA handles this very well by having the player black out and wake up injured. The monster de-spawns temporarly to give the player a grace period during which to find a health station and regroup. I don't know if that's the right answer here, and I don't really know what would work better in this case, but how it works currently is an exercise in frustration and made me put the game down twice within the first hour. I understand you can't save anywhere because it would reduce tension by eliminating consequences for death. However as it stands the save rooms are too few and far between such that I lose significant progress every time I die. Which is constantly, because of how numerous the basic enemy type is in the apartments area and how uselessly weak the rusty pipe is. Maybe this is just a thankless slog to make you appreciate better weapons when you get them later? I don't know. What I do know is that subjectively, the experience was a bad one. On paper it should be great. The graphics are better than Organ Quarter, the gameplay mechanics better developed. The story, what little of it I've seen, is promising apart from some rare instances of cringe dialogue. But something is wrong. I'm not the dev, I can't say for sure what it is, but have offered a few ideas in this review that I hope help you to tweak this into the awesome game that it clearly has the potential to become.
I'm so happy that I finally got to play Dement after following it for years! It's pretty much exactly what I'd hoped for which is a true old-school survival horror game for VR. It reminds me A LOT of Silent Hill and I can spot some Twin Peaks in it as well. Playing this brings me back to my childhood, feeling the same feelings I felt playing SH and RE on PS1 & SH2 on PS2. Take this review with a huge portion of salt since there's basically a complete overhaul coming to the game in a future update, I'm just reviewing the game as it is right now hoping it can get some more attention which it really deserves. The gameplay holds up surprisingly well, though a bit dated by today's VR standards. It can be pretty frustrating at times but you get over it. The puzzles have been fun and clever, exploration is great and there's item combining, ammo crafting and a lot of other good stuff. My biggest problem is with combat, especially melee but the game is pretty generous with healing items which compensates a lot so it stopped bothering me after a while, I also got better at the game eventually. Graphics hold up really well and look great on the Quest 2 but the scale on some of the objects are a bit weird. I'm not sure if that's intentional or not though since the game has that Silent Hill-esque otherworld thing going on. Performance is good enough but it could be better. It's mostly a non-issue though. Audio and ambience is overall really good. There's some exceptions, but they're not really worth mentioning. Voice acting is also surprisingly good. The story so far has been very engaging and interesting, It's mostly told from reading notes which (at least to me) is far more immersive than being fed everything through narration and watching cutscenes. I find myself being exicted about what's gonna happen next and finding out more about something I read in a note when I reach a room mentioned in said note. The enviromental storytelling is also great. I don't know what else to say, but if you love old-school survival horror and grew up with the greats such as SH, RE & AITD, you're gonna love this. This game really brings me back and I can barely wait until my next play session tomorrow and progressing even further! Out of all the VR games I've played so far, this is the one I'd recommend the most even without the complete overhaul update. You can tell that this dev is a huge fan of horror and really understands what made the old games great. You can also really tell that this is a passion project based on the all-around high quality and care put into the game. I'd give this a full fat 10 if it wasn't for the somewhat janky combat. For now it's a 9.5/10. Totally recommend. This is survival horror for VR done right! PS I know I said that I was gonna get this back in April, 2020.. But hey, better late than never, right? c;
