Writing this review because I know you're probably looking at the price tag and might be scarier than the game itself. Let me clarify the reasoning behind the developers decision to price it extremely high. This game is in early access and is planned to have a total of "8 chapters" with each chapter being about 2-3 hours depending on what difficulty you play on. So far, there are only 4 chapters, with every added chapter being a free update to current owners of the game. This team has poured 3+ years into the development of this game. If you like games with: -Horror -Survival mechanics (Exploring for loot, Healing, Replacing Batteries, etc) -Inventory system -Great Atmosphere -Saves similarly to old school Resident Evil -Sneak -Melee/Firearm combat -Variety of enemies (with some being blind or deaf) -Gameplay that will keep you on your toes around every corner This is for you. Keep in mind this game is not perfect. There will be bugs. So far the only bug I've ran into is when my battery percentage on my inventory screen was stuck at 0%. No game breaking bug as of yet. AI is surprisingly good. I'd hate to see indie devs discouraged because of the lack of sales when their game is actually a solid horror game. If you're still deciding whether you should buy it or not, the devs clarified that they are working on releasing a DEMO for everyone to try soon, so you can wait until then.
Dement is a terrific horror game with a surprising amount of gameplay depth. The combat is very fun and challenging, and the stealth is very tense. The graphics are pretty average for a VR game, but the lighting is very realistic. Story also seems good so far, it's mostly told through documents you find on your journey. Game runs pretty smoothly on medium with an R9 390X, with a few missed frames here and there. I've played for almost 3 hours now, and I'm not quite done with chapter 1, so this game will have a very solid length if all the chapters are this long. Overall, I definitely recommend this game. The gameplay is really fun and engaging, it's truly scary, and it has plenty of content.
I don't normally write reviews but with the low number of reviews I wanted to write one for this game. If you're like me you probably see this price and are very hesitant as there are a lot of other new AAA games such as Boneworks, Stormland, and Asguard's Wrath. Well after playing the demo, I decided to go ahead and buy and have not regretted it a bit! Although the graphics may not be as good as Boneworks or some of the other games, the atmosphere the game delivers is awesome (very similar to Silent Hill) and very creepy! There is also a ton of game content. I am currently in the 3rd chapter (of 4 for Early Access, 8 planned total) and have spent probably close to 30 hours to get this far. Even though I currently have both Boneworks and Stormland I keep feeling myself drawn to this game and have been spending a lot more time playing it than anything else for quite awhile. Also, the game feels very polished and the devs have been very responsive to questions, bugs, etc. I would check out the free demo and if you like it then consider buying as, although the price is a bit steep, it is worth it for all the content included.
Only gave it an hour......Yep, awful experience indeed and struggling to progress in game.... its creeping me out! lol great so far and I can not wait to continue tomorrow night XD. UPDATE 24/02/20: 11 Hours of gameplay in yet still not reached the end of the current content (that's right, half of the chapters is yet to be added lol). You can tell that the devs is pouring their soul into this game, willing to take feedback/suggestions (a suggestion from myself is being added into one of the areas just to make something even more creepier, your welcome :P). Silent hill fan and thinking of buying this...BUY IT, there is enough content to play through now and it supports the dev to develop the game further. Its a game bringing silent hill like world to you in VR :D UPDATE 04/03/2020 19 Hours of first play-through gameplay and still not reach the end of the current contact....£30 AAA games of today mostly last around 3-4 hours unless you repeat content again. There is still tones of content to be added including side quest/areas etc to be added along with rest of main story (19 hours yet not reach the end lol mad). Totally worth the £30 to me!. UPDATE 12/03/2020 28 Hours and sad to say that I reach the end of chapter 4.....it is indeed worth the price! Did I mention that the game is not finished yet but I got 28 hours of gameplay? Loads of improvements are on the road map plus 4 more chapters. There is more to the game then what you see on the screenshots (Needs updating :D ).
If you are a survival horror fan with VR, this game is almost a must have. Especially if you like retro and difficult survival horror. This game uses the "save items" mechanic to limit the saves similar to older traditional survival horror games. Personally that is actually the one thing I don't like that much about this game, but other than that this game has a great environment and atmosphere. The graphics are not that great, but they are good enough to be able to maintain the atmosphere. It also requires you to manage your health items and ammo and to backtrack and solve puzzles. Also, this Early Access game litterally has a massive amount of more content than many fully complete games. I'm currently almost 5 hours in and still only near the end of the first area ( out of 4 that are currently in the game, 8 are planned for the final release ). The only other thing to say is you should be aware that this game's interface and controls does feel a bit indie, as it doesn't actually utilize VR for most of it. For example you access your journal and inventory through a standard menu system rather than physically pulling out a bag or something like that. You use health items by selecting and pressing "use". You switch weapons by pressing a button as oppose to reaching to your hip or back. Regardless, I think the story-driven survival horror aspect of this game outweighs the indie interface so I'd recommend checking it out.
Game is in early access and the beginning is a little rough around the edges, but stick it out! What waits is an awesome throwback to the Silent Hill and Resident Evil games of yesterday. Game is a ton of fun and has high tension with item gathering, lore, combat, etc. Definitely recommend giving it a go! PS. Its a very long game as well as I'm at 4 hours and haven't even completed the first part (I believe there are 8 parts planned) EDIT: I now have well over 35 hours into the game and I am coming to the end of available content. Considering its is only 4 out of the planned 8 chapters, that is incredible!! This has quickly become, despite being developed by a small team, one of my favorite VR games of all time. It PERFECTLY captures the tension and feeling of classic survival horror!
Yes, this thing is amazing, I hope to see more games like this. 10/10
My First honest Impressions https://youtu.be/i1BZZxGf6vE The game play nice and has a strong atmosphere. Graphics of the game isn't bad and does well to draw you in. When looking at some area low textures are visible. Movement on the Rift S was OK minus the fact you had to use the A and X button to turn instead of the right stick. Navigating the menu isn't easy due to the touch controllers acting as if there Vive wands. I have to push the stick in to move around the menus. Tutorial isn't to bad, but alot of reading with not thought out designs to them. Gameplay is great and the horror really is there. You feel it at every corner and behind every door. The creatures are menacing and will scare you. Moments I wanted to stop to check my pants. Now the big issue and that is the monster size price. I can't recommend this at this price to anyone. It's just too much. I would be will to change my recommendation if the price becomes cheaper. Edit: Had review key removed.
This is the BEST VR horror game to date and easily the scariest as well. I have played a LOT of horror games in VR (and not in VR) and this one has scared me and made me uneasy more than any other game I think I have ever played. It is far from just a bunch of jump scares. The game plays a little bit like an old school horror game (think silent hill or resident evil). The biggest difference that this game has from those older games is how much depth this game has in terms of playstyle. One second you're sneaking behind a monster and the next you're turning around and running for your life because you don't have enough health to get into a fight. The only reason you don't have enough health is cause of the last fight. seriously I can't stress enough how incredible this game is, I don't know why it isn't more popular. don't let the price scare you away either because I'm 5 hours in and still only on the first chapter. The devs are also very responsive in their discord channel. You can tell they put a lot of time and effort into this game and continue to. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the chapters for this game as they come out and I already know I wont be disapointed with them. Be warned, this one is NOT for the faint of heart.
If you like Silent Hill you'll like this. Took me 7 hours to finish the first chapter. No pp needed for Pimax users.
