Deathsmiles I・II

Fangtastic game! I was struggling with lag at first, but once I turned off Vsync and smoothing it works great every time I play it now. It might seem pricey, but it's worth it to play such a unique shmup

It's always pure joy to experience the wonderful art-work and music of Cave shmups together with a solid gameplay including rather deep scoring mechanics as well as intricate but very intuitive controls. Another smart move by cave is the controllable rank system that can be adjusted to the player's level allowing a gentle introduction to death mode and the control of the familiar. Upon mastering the game, the suicide bullet cancel is extremely satisfying. This 2022 Steam port by City Connection is supposed to be the definitive port of Deathsmiles with lower input lag and better slowdown accuracy than the 2016 port. The biggest difference that I have noticed so far with the 2016 port is that the latter does not include any slowdown on the TLB of MBL 1.1. So MBL 1.1 can be played only on this 2022 port. This port includes a variety of modes (normal, arcade, 1.1 and MBL analogues) as well as training (but no boss training), replays and leaderboards. So far MBL 1.1 is my favorite but the other modes are great as well. The weak point concerns Deathsmiles 2 that does not include any slowdown except perhaps in the Arrange mode (but I did not test it enough to be sure). It would have been better to have a well taken care of DS2 in a separate port.

10/10 🔥🏆 I don’t understand it, but it was incredibly fun/entertaining…and fairly easy as shmups go.
