Review
📜 Intro Deathchron is an action and platform game with an 8-bit style quite similar to the nes games with a limited color palette and music, like the games of that time Deathchron does not have a deep story so is simple and barely understandable is explain with a few images: you find a robot, you drive it, you kill enemies and you save the world. There are 5 different levels and the selection of these is through a screen where the physical locations of these levels are shown and you select the desired level very similar to megaman but with the big difference that the levels are locked and you have to follow a linear order yes or yes, which makes this type of level selection screen meaningless, the game pays a lot of tribute to 8-bit games with a beautiful and well-detailed pixel style as well as the sound track but this last ends up being poorer because all the levels share the same song even in the fighting with bosses which takes away epicism since it is very tiring to listen to the same music all game. 🎮 playable mechanics The game is in 2D with classic gameplay of moving forward, jumping and shooting enemies, several enemies are capable of shooting so you constantly have to dodge enemy shots by jumping, the robot has a 3-state health bar which you can increase with upgrades from the menu by spending pieces that enemies drop and special orbs that reward you when you solve a special puzzle or kill a boss (currently the system is bugged so you can infinitely collect an orb if you collect it and then die), these upgrades in addition of life there are also special weapons, they have their own ammunition, the bad thing is that to reload a single bullet these special weapons you have to use a container [E] which are limited and also serves to restore your life so if you want to reload special weapons you can't heal yourself. An added mechanic is the possibility for the child to get off the robot to go through small places or climb stairs to solve puzzles on occasions necessary to advance and on others for special items, the child's mobility is limited as well as his life ( which is reduced to 1), it is not highly recommended to get out of the robot often since the child can only jump one block so if you move away from the robot it is likely that you will not be able to return to it and you will end up stuck. The level design is generally good, it feels entertaining and challenging, in addition to keeping elements typical of the games of that time, such as the typical water that is instakill, as well as the enemies that shoot at you while you jump, jumping into the water and having to start from the last save point. Each level has a themed boss with the environment of the level, the visual design is magnificent but the playable one not so much since some of the bosses' attacks seem unavoidable especially the first boss. 💭 Conclusion The game is short and visually it is fantastic, it really looks like an 8-bit game from past times but with current gameplay as well as fluid control, but unfortunately it cannot be recommended for purchase in its current state, the game has many bugs such as getting stuck in certain places, that of the infinite improvement objects and worst of all, the possible corruption of the saved game in which it can take you to another more advanced level and with the corrupted level making it impossible to continue and having to start the game from the biginning. If these severe bugs are solved you can give it a try since the game is cheap and is entertaining. This game is a buggy mess. The level for stage 2 is recycled from stage 1 for example. Terrible game and I don't want to bother finishing it. That's why the game is so cheap. Don't even waste your money on this garbage title. A slice of pizza is worth than this game.
I've written the review in Curator in Chinese, but I'll write it more detail in here. This game isn't bad at all. I think the part about using the cooperation between the Robot and the Kid to finish the act is interesting. Also, I like the design of the Robot. But there are still a lot of bugs or problems that should be fixed, 1. If the Robot or the Kid ran out of the map, I can do nothing but restart the act. 2. I don't know what's the difference between the screw and the gear in the map? All these two items offer 1 screw. 3. Only 1 BGM in the whole game. 4. Act 3 and Act 4 are not available, even though I've finished Act 2. 5. The distance of each floating platform is far af. 6. I can not understand the story of this game. Why did the Kid got caught by...alien? Why did the kid know how to control the Robot, and what's the point? 7. The boss fight in Act 2 has an HP bug. I don't know how I triggered it. This bug needs to restart the whole game to fix. Those are the problems I found so far. I appreciate Josh giving me this game. But unfortunately, I can not recommend it until those problems are fixed.
I was hoping to grab this game, beat it in a couple of hours, and give it a positive review, but it needs about a month's worth of playtesting & polish on it still. It's a shame, because the pixel art is beautiful and there are some solid ideas right up front. Some immediate issues: * Lack of checkpoints (I went about 12 screens deep underground but was sent back to the start after 1 death) * No settings menu or keybinding * Sound effects are too loud * Sound effects are often missing (no sound effect when you take damage or die, for example) * If you walk past an enemy that shoots, its sound effects will play forever even when you're 10 screens away * No coyote time (jumping off a car or crocodile is very unforgiving) Best of luck to the dev. I hope that they have the opportunity to fix this game up and/or that they succeed with future projects. There is definitely some talent behind the game that shines through even in this rough state.
Deathchron is an uneven, buggy mess, but shows promise with classic NES style. The basic premise is solid, and it feels and looks great, but the bugs and uneven level design make it almost unplayable. It needs to spend more time exploring the kid mechanic to stay interesting. We need chinese&window mode!!!!
Ok wow! This game is very different from what i've played and reviewed so this might get kind of long... The game is fantastic, it has a beautiful aesthetic and pixel art and this could very well turn into an amazing project given the right things are done to it and the developer still plans to expand and work on this piece. The game as of playing it on April/22/2023 feels incomplete there are a lot of inconsistencies and areas to easily softlock if you exit your mech at the wrong times. (Although you're not supposed to exit the mech at those moments it just feels kind of "unplanned" whenever you want to try something and you end up having to reset the game). I haven't finished the game yet but this is what I found so far... The music repeats, there needs to be more soundtracks, I noticed from the dev's previous response that this is a glitch but i'd love to hear what the other soundtracks sound like. The very first stage has a place where you can go out of bounds of the map and die its pretty funny. The Aligator boss almost always drops his core inside the wall making it inaccessible 90% of the time (Maybe replace the core spawn to the center of the stage instead). The second "drill boss" doesn't even spawn a core (unsure if it was supposed to). and the boss also spawned with partial health (Again not sure if it was supposed to). I wish there was omnidirectional shooting, that would make things more immersive, or at least as an upgrade option (didn't see it as one but if there is later in the game feel free to correct me). The second stage also relies on a some of "leaps of faith" down holes and crevices where you are unsure if you're actually supposed to go down there or you die trying to find out. Would be nice to have some context clues or indicators showing the path that is needed to follow. (Sloping floors, elevators, breakable blocks, or if you wanna be lazy arrow signs lol etc). The story itself is very basic, Nothing much is explained or given, I feel like this game could have an amazing storyline, maybe as you're defeating bosses you extract something from them (a vial of stomach acid from the aligator, or a mini cutscene where you rip out the robot's drill arms and take them with you and use those "parts" in the store to upgrade your weaponry and arsenal giving you weapons such as an acid shot or a drill weapon to access hidden areas etc.) It would also be cool that as you upgrade your robot his AI is also evolving giving him a more "human" personality. I could see this as being an iconic ending where in the end the robot rips out his own buster to give to the kid in order to save his life while he stays behind and you have to run out of an exploding building or base of sorts. All in all, this game has a LOT of potential, I hope the developer continues to work on this and expands it with more ideas and mechanics as it has the potential to be one of the next best sidescrollers out there. The game has no sex unfortunately so i'll have to dock a point from the overall score :^) 7/10 at its current state. 10/10 if the dev decides to expand the game more.
Video Review: https://youtu.be/LWvC9sPKFfk TL:DR Deathchron has a great premise, great level design, fun gameplay, and incredible spritework, but it is a buggy mess. If the bugs were fixed it would be an easy recommend but as it stands now the constant crashes and gamebreaking bugs make it too frustrating to play.
