If Hitman was a WWII game ...
... this would probably be it. Though to be honest I am making that comparison in case you haven't heard of this game. Death to Spies plays a lot like Hitman ( closer to Silent Assassin/ Contracts ) but takes place in the early 1940's. You take the role of a Russian agent who was promoted and then worked for Smersh. The story is explained with a framed narrative, meaning that what you see in the cutscenes is the present, but you play the missions that took place in the past. The protagonist basically gives information to one of his superiors about the missions he did. But to be honest, the story isn't really important as there isn't a specific plan or a final vilain. The main goal is to sabotage nazis by stealing documents or assassinating their officers. There are also a couple of missions where you have to kill traitors from your own faction too. But there is a chance that you may forget about the story because some missions can take about an hour to finish and the in-game objectives don't give any background about the targets or why you have to do what you do. The levels are based on different countries in Europe.
Gameplay
Like I said in the start of the review, it plays a lot like Hitman ( older ones ) but has a few extra features. I like that even though the disguise system is a bit more challenging and in some cases complex, it's more comprehensible. There is a minimap where you can see which enemies can see through your disguise and at what distance. If you damage the enemy's clothes with a knife or bullet then you may not be able to take their disguise, so you gotta perform a choke or a clean headshot ( or knock out, if you wanna do it pacifist style ). Another realistic detail is that the NPC's eyesight is not based on which direction their body is facing, but the front side of their head. For example if a standing enemy rotates their head a specific direction, you can see in the minimap that they are looking towards there. I know that this may sound obvious or simple, but in many games that have stealth mechanics the head movements are just animations that don't represent the enemy's vision. The outdoor missions are great and give the player many entries to approach the objective, they have a nice sandbox feel. The player can go prone and sneak through bushes, or climb over obstacles to get a better sniping view ... or run people over with a vehicle. I guess the third option would be for those who want take the loud approach, but it's a bit more difficult due to gunshots being realistically lethal.
Other
I found the level design great, both outdoor and indoor areas have plenty of details. Rural areas have forests with many bushes to hide and you can hear birds in the background too, while indoor ones have many models and textures for every room. I found the hotel missions very realistic. Some negatives : The German voice acting is so bad to the point that it's funny. I assume that they couldn't afford to hire someone to do the voice lines? I read in a couple of forums posts that the game was censored, so maybe a lot of speaking lines were removed. Surprisingly in the missions that take place in the UK the NPC's don't talk at all, but in the cutscenes the English sounds fluent.
