I don't even remember what happens in this game despite beating it fairly recently, but I at least remember it being a fairly decent continuation of the first one. I made a fresh character as I didn't have a save to carry over from the first game, and starting out felt kind of slow, not helped by the fact I played solo, but after progressing a little it was actually fairly enjoyable. Obviously it's better to have played the first one first, so you have a geared character to carry over, which I feel Riptide was kind of designed around. But, it got me interested in the genre again so I went ahead and bought the first game, which is a certified 2008-2012 era banger, and I intend to replay it very soon. I think most people that have this on Steam got it from a bundle, because it's not one of those games you purchase intentionally. Bit of a shame because it's a decent game overall. I recommend it for what it is - a continuation of the first game that offers the same level of clunkiness with absolutely zero improvements, which should've released as a DLC for the first game and not a standalone title. I even think if it had just been released as an expansion/DLC for the first game, like D2:LOD, it would've had a much better initial reception.
as someone who has just completed the first dead island, i can say for a fact dead island 1 was leagues better in terms of gameplay than this. this game felt like if you just grabbed everything you had from the original, slapped a few extra skills, cranked up the difficulty with a few new mechanics and more special zombies, strapped a pair of ice skates onto your character and called it a day. i do note that the story is definitely better than the first one. i also feel that this game was more driven towards multiplayer than single player. so would i recommend buying this game? no unless you plan to play multiplayer for a slightly more "enjoyable" experience, but not even that would make this game still worth it
Everything i loved about the first game has been bugged by poor hitboxes, Choppy frame ratee / mix performance and enemies bugged, Also everything now is level based all over the place, Shame dead island 1 was good and dead island 2 is good, ,But this is no better than toilet paper !
Dead Island: Riptide is less of a true sequel and more of an expanded follow-up to the original Dead Island. It keeps the addictive first-person melee combat and co-op gameplay but does little to evolve the formula. If you enjoyed the first game, you'll likely have fun here, but it can feel repetitive. What it does well Satisfying melee combat. Smashing, slicing, and dismembering zombies remains the game's biggest strength. Excellent co-op. Playing with up to four friends makes the experience much more entertaining. Weapon crafting. Finding and modifying weapons is addictive, with plenty of creative combinations. New content. The island of Palanai, a new playable character, boats, and base-defense missions add some variety. Critics generally agreed the gameplay was a more polished version of the original. Weaknesses Feels too familiar. Much of the game reuses mechanics and ideas from the first Dead Island, leading many reviewers to describe it as more of an expansion than a full sequel. Weak story. The plot and dialogue are forgettable and rarely provide strong motivation. Repetitive missions. Many objectives revolve around fetch quests and repeated combat encounters. Technical issues. While improved over the original, occasional bugs and AI problems remain. Gameplay The game focuses on: First-person melee combat. Looting and crafting weapons. Character progression through skill trees. Optional four-player co-op. Exploring tropical environments filled with zombies. The new base-defense sections are a nice change of pace but aren't frequent enough to redefine the experience. Who should play it? Yes, if you loved the original Dead Island and want more of the same, especially with friends. Maybe not, if you're looking for major gameplay innovations or a compelling story. Overall Dead Island: Riptide is an enjoyable co-op zombie game with satisfying combat and addictive loot collection, but it doesn't significantly improve on its predecessor. Fans of the original will find plenty to enjoy, while newcomers may prefer starting with the first game. Overall rating: 7.5/10 – A fun but conservative follow-up that's best experienced in co-op.

This game was garbage when I played it as a 6 year old, and it's still garbage several years later. 10/10
