This is a slow-paced, challenging, fun take on first person survival horror games. Lots of backtracking to be had, resource management, a few not-too-difficult puzzles, and some amusing surprises too. I liked the ability to take my own notes on the map, but you can turn that option off. Additionally, there's a built-in randomizer, which is nice. Like other games of the genre, you have little supplies in the beginning, but will amass more ammo and more powerful guns as you continue. Bosses were a bit tough, but once you figure out their pattern, they should be beatable. I explored every room, and spent around 8 hours in the game. I'm sure some people will be turned off by the pacing, limited resources (meaning potentially loading earlier saves), and other qualities, but fans of the genre should give this a try. The story is about what you expect, but the game is clearly a loving homage to other titles, notably the original Resident Evil (1996) and Alone in the Dark (1992), and I have no complaints about that. Dead Beacon is only $5, which is criminally low for the amount of time it takes to beat the game alone.
This and Nightmare of Decay are what I would refer to as "RE7" likes. classic survival horror setup, but FPS perspective/combat great game go play it
Indie gem, if you played and liked "Nightmare of Decay" you will like, most likely, this. - It does have "Resident Evil" like (old ones) invertory, resource management, combat (First person). - Great atmospere - Puzzels are fun - Somewhat clunky enemy movement but nothing that you can not get used to - Really rewards good resource management and searching - Is hard even for veterans of these kind of games - Has randomizer, this adds a lot of fun and strategizing around resource management - Can write and even draw on map - Story is basic, gets the job done and adds to atmosphere - Cost only 5 dollars (without sale) - Break free mechanic after you get grabbed is somewhat useless and anoying thought Definetly worth the money, especially if you will plan on replaying it on "harder difficulty " or with "randomizer"
For the price the game is remarkably well thought out. The level design of the island you're stuck on is great, unfolding more and more like a giant puzzle box, and just when you think you've mapped the whole thing, the game will ask you to recontextualize puzzle answers in a really interesting way. It's complex, until you've seen the whole place, and by the end you'll barely need to look at the map. And one of the most enjoyable parts is the mapping. The game will automatically fill rooms in, but everything else is up to you. You can draw and leave text notes, as well as put down custom pins. The game does a great job of having complex critical path objectives that strongly encourage you to use these features, and it's really engaging and forces you to take in your surroundings more. I'd hesitate to call this a particularly scary game, but the atmosphere is still suitably spooky, sort of like a toned down 70's Italian horror film. There's no weird tonal shifts but the tension of the game comes more from the mechanics. I'd recommend playing on the lowest difficulty first, because the game is pretty tough on Normal. You have to make really careful decisions about which enemies you take out. There IS enough resources to make it through, and the game is consistently rewarding when it comes to exploration. Several areas have items tucked away in really diabolical places, which often means backtracking is more rewarding since you're likely to find something you missed on a return to an area. I will say, the game's incredibly deliberate pace can take a bit to get used to. Walking forward partially is the only way to not move at a snail's pace, and reloading and firing most guns have long animations. The game is designed to compensate for this, but it's pretty slow. Maybe a speed upgrade of some sort would have alleviated some of the backtracking in the game's true ending route. It's really not deal breaking though. The game does an amazing job of using complex environment design to challenge the player in different ways. It really leans into the dungeon crawler element of old school survival horror, and even at full price, the game is worth a look.
A spectacular survival horror game that should've been algorithmically served up to me when it was released. I literally hunt games like this down and didn't find it until over 2 years after its release! Wearing inspirations like a coat, Dead Beacon is an unabashed copycat of my other favorite indie survival horror game Nightmare of Decay. Everything is working great. + The controls are good. + Enemy design is varied and satisfying to shoot. + Mansion design is compelling. + Puzzles aren't braindead but don't feel like a chore. + There's almost no music but it's ok because the atmospherics are eerie and soothing. ++++++ Brilliant map that lets you mark all over it. My complaints are mild. - the enemy grabs feel disorienting in a sloppy-not-scary/exciting way, and pressing L/R to break them feels even worse. Wish there'd been some kind of knife pickups like in Resident Evil that let you get away free but the item breaks. - the guns are nice but I wished to upgrade all of them. Normally I am pretty vicious to survival horror games without NG+ or unlocks, but this one gets a pass. It's 5 dollars, it's spectacular, and it has the amazing map. Developer is working on some kind of GTA/Doom/StardewValley amalgam and it looks really cool but I sure hope they return to survival horror and include NG+ unlockables/challenges next time!
