Its a decent game with a nice story but half the fights become a bunch of rng at the end or at least it did for me. The boss fights were the worse it felt like i had to have a bunch of healing items for each fight or almost get instantly blown away from some attacks, and grinding was just horrible when basic creatures in later areas didnt even give that much exp. I wanted to like this game but its just so annoying.
Reviewing this game is both easy and difficult. It's lovingly crafted, each 'map' is lush and full of detail. The story is long and similarly detailed. Objectively i would say it's more than worth the price as it's an experience that will stick with you long after you've played it. Subjectively... I struggled with the endings a bit. I don't wish to spoil any of them but suffice to say, each is not a perfect ending, each one is about a choice, a difficult choice that costs something to gain something. This is no Disney animated film where everyone lives happily ever after. After 50 to 80 hours of playing you will have to decide what matters most to you, who matters most to you and where you think the best outcomes can be achieved afterwards. Another review for this game complained about the ending they got which is actually the worst ending you can get as far as i'm aware. When i played this game through just before the launch version was completed i meticulously gathered everyone and everything i could, unlocking every ending option except for the 'resist all essence scenes' one, since i naturally wanted to see every sex scene on my first playthrough. I have no idea how that one goes so maybe it is a Disney ending, but i highly doubt it. If i were to suggest a frame to view this story from i would suggest perhaps a Greek Tragedy. Not in the sense that the hero is doomed to fail, but simply that fiction doesn't need to shy away from the difficulties that lie in reality just to end a story. I say this game is worth the price, it's beautiful, the music is lovely, the characters rich and varied and the gameplay rewarding. If you're on the fence, give it a try. Edit: the 1.1.1 update's accessibility mode is extremely appreciated, something the dev and i spoke about before the launch, seeing it added is absolutely wonderful and deserves recognition.
Quick Review : 8/10 Great Story alongside a wide variety of places and characters. Long Review : Story : The game focuses upon a girl named Mercy and the many choices she makes along her 50+ hour journey. The events unfold in mostly text based monologues (as per the standard rpgmaker game) with the occasional voice narration by herself. The story has a tremendous amount of backstory so if you're looking loads of lore you've got it. The game has a lot of player based input in the events even concerning the endings . However, to get the best endings, I implore you to read the walkthrough because every choice matters and can have a major affect upon the game and the ending. As an example, choosing to save someone can result in them being around for dozens of hours to the games ending . Combat : Nothing particularly special. Same old stuff you see in other rpgmaker games. The most noteworthy thing would be the usage of essence in combat. However, be mindful of how much essence you use because that will also affect the game endings. Sex scenes : The sex scenes are text-based but always insert a scrollable image at the end of the sext (sex text) sequences. Most of the sext events are non-repeatable with the exception of the masturbation sequences. The one-time sext events are based off of choices you made throughout the story so please read the walkthrough to find them or you might miss the trigger window. Fortunately the game comes with a gallery so you can see them again. However, once again, be mindful of whether or not you do the sext events because they also affect the game endings you get. Overall, the game was very enjoyable for a sex rpg game. The only downsides would be the scattered quality of images from scene to scene (see store page for examples). the other downside is the need for finding each and every recruitable npc to maximize your endgame "results". Come for the sex. Stay for the immersive story. 8/10
I have to say out of the entire category on Steam, this is one of the most thought out games I've purchased. Not to say that everything is perfect but its an easy game to enjoy. POSITIVES The amount of content here is crazy. I'm used to having at max 6 hours of gameplay. Then everything is just a, "replay until you get all the variations" kind of deal. Most games I buy on steam, I kind of just skim through the actual content until I get to the parts that I actually like. But there are so many mechanics and systems in this game that just add an extra layer to what you're able to do. When you're going through the story, everything that's happening is easy to understand and follow. The lore of this game is presented very clearly. Going back a second time in the game, I didn't really miss anything because I already understood what was going on. A lot of games, even tv shows have that issue of having to go back to understand some things. The equipment systems is a nice touch. I haven't gone through all the weapons but seeing how they have their own stats and abilities you can learn, it really makes you sit there and think about what you want your combat style to be like. I don't get to do that very often in other games. Spells also have a very wide variety. All of them have some sort of synergy with Mercy and they apply different effects. They're honestly worth investing into because later on those different effects will make a huge difference in clearing a boss or not. There are plenty more examples of things you can do that change the way you play. It very satisfying and these systems all come together in the end. NEGATIVES I will admit the difficulty ramp gets a little intense. At one point I found myself spamming water buckets so I could heal and level because I was hard stuck. Also buying more water jugs doesn't increase your capacity. However after starting a new game and doing all the optional side fights I'm actually far ahead in levels. One thing that bother's me a little is the way turns are visualized in combat. Some npc's charge their bar faster and its hard to plan out your turns if you're cutting it close. Also I think pitting Orus and Mercy into one path, the Essence Type or Attack Type for Orus, is very limiting. I think if later you could find bosses during free roam and defeat them for a class/essence item that you could equip to either of them would be nice. Maybe add a leveling system to them too so a newly found Moonhunter isn't the same level as your previous Moonguard. Adding a way to switch those out later would still make the choice meaningful in the start of the game but eliminate some frustration later. That's all I have to say that's negative about this game. OVERALL I would highly recommend this game to anyone that likes turned based rpgs. The character and world building is easy to get into and it can be played for a long time. I really enjoyed it and seeing how much content there is really tells me that the developer cares about their world. There's even a walkthrough written by the developer when you download the game. I would give this game an 8/10. The content was compelling. All I would really change is what I mentioned in the negative section and give a little bit of polish. I think I've encountered 1 bug in the 40 hours I've played. If you told me that IMP was releasing a game tomorrow I would be in line waiting to give them my money.
This game is absolutely great. The Story/plot is the main reason you would play this game. If you are just looking to jerk it you should probably find another game, but if you are interested in a proper RPG game with a solid story and a decent amount of what i would describe as "logically placed sex/porn scenes". This is the game for you! The porn/sex is not constantly thrown in your face. The scenes themselves are text based, (usually) with an image at the end of the scene depicting what has happened. (Those would be the images that you can see in the promotional pictures on the top of the store page, there is text before those, which describe in decent detail what that image shows) The text parts of the scenes are very good, in depth enough to get you going, not too long and drawn out, and the image is a nice bonus at the end. The first play-trough did get me to 51 hours of in-game time. And I'd guess that maybe 2-3 hours of those were idle time cause of IRL stuff. I tried to do as many things as possible with my first play-through, got stuck, a lot during it. Mostly down to my absolutely horrible build. (don't try to do a greatsword build that almost exclusively focuses on accuracy and counter-attacks. Sounded cool, didn't work) I also did a lot of walking around clicking on walls to try to find secrets, so you could likely cut down the playtime by a good amount if you are not like that. 10/10. For the price asked this is a ridiculously good deal. As long as what is described above is your cup of tea. Edit: a year or 2 later. Came back to the game for a second playthrough, and all of the above is still very much true. But just wanted to add: holy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, doing a decent setup instead of some weird build makes the game infinitely more fun. Much much less getting stuck on tough enemies. It still gets down to the wire, with the hard enemies. but feels WAY closer. and way better to win. game is still INCREDIBLE and still VERY MUCH WORTH THE ASKING PRICE
For other Adult/Hentai themed reviews, please follow us at Lewd Gamer!
Daughter of Essence is an intriguing adult-focused RPG that really lives up to its asking price. While it's not for everyone, this title impressed me greatly during my time reviewing it. While it's easily identified as an RPG Maker title, every aspect of the experience exceeds most of what gamers have come to expect from games made with that toolset. Those of you familiar with my reviews of games know that I've got a big soft spot for quality music in a game, and DoE delivers a rich score that gives players an actual reason to use speakers or headphones while playing. Literally every character you can talk to has at least one thing to say, and often will have a full conversation with you. Much of it's inconsequential, but in the early hours of the game, it does a great job of giving the town a sense of place, and informing you of who your character is and how she fits into the world. There's plenty of sex and sexuality, but its handled with an almost artful quality, with every adult scene limited to a single image, but with at least a couple hundred words describing the encounter, which brings it to life better than the poorly-animated stuff you get in 90% of modern adult titles. The artwork has a very distinct visual style, very similar to Rob Liefeld's work on Marvel Comics, if you can believe that. Your enjoyment of the art is definitely going to be affected by this unique visual design, and I would definitely encourage you to look at the preview artwork on the Steam page to make sure this isn't a deal breaker for you. The reality is, however, that you SHOULDN'T buy this game for the naughty art. Buy this game for the narrative. If you like to read high-quality smut, this game will please you. If games like Planescape:Torment and Disco Elysium entertained you, this is right up your alley. The sex and sexuality are a bonus, not the real attraction here. The game plays competently on a gamepad, though you can also do mouse and keyboard if you prefer. The combat is honestly the weakest part of the game, and while I can respect the choice to try and keep things engaging with timing-based minigames for combat, I personally would have preferred a traditional turn-based affair, or at least the ability to set the difficulty, so if I was to hit a challenging point, it wouldn't prevent me from enjoying the story. The game also has a bad habit of not really signposting what it wants you to do at points, leading to a lot of unproductive wandering. Neither of these things are enough to ruin the game, but they both definitely had an effect on my enjoyment of it. The level of choice in how things play out overall is very reminiscent of games like Pillars of Eternity, or Divinity: Original Sin, however, which also makes up for it. On a side note, I really have come to appreciate how Shady Corner Games has taken to publishing adult titles that are actually innovative and unique. The ones I've reviewed have all been very niche titles that are complete experiences that are more than just “play for ten minutes for some lewd pics”. The adult gaming industry needs more publishers like Shady Corner, and far less Asian shovelware companies. Daughter of Essence is impressive in how wide-reaching of a scope it has, and is more impressive overall than 90% of all RPG Maker games you'll find. It's exceedingly rare to find a game using this engine that's genuinely worth $20 USD, but DoE hits that mark. Any fan of RPG's will find value in both its replay factor, game length, and in its writing and production values. Daughter of Essence is worth its full price, and if it's on sale, it's a must-buy for fans that want a genuinely MATURE adult title as well.
This JRPG is less so defined by the pornographic scenes that interject themselves between the story and more so about the process of making the best possible choices while under constant restraints. From the very first decision whether to be horny in a barn, up until the very end of the game, you will be forced to make decisions from a whole laundry list of options, some of which will not even be visible to you as choices. The consequences of your choices can sometimes be felt immediately, but others have long-reaching ramifications. this goes as far as what sort of gear you decide to buy at the start of the game, as oftentimes there will be additional items available which can only be obtained by hitting specific stat thresholds. It's hard for me to explain in words, but the feeling that any purchase you make, any weapon you use, and any ally you find, theres always going to be something else it's at the loss of. Despite that equipment part sounding like this could be a good game to make into a collect-athon, It's actually better experienced if you let go of that preconception right away. YOU WILL MISS STUFF, and that's okay. It's impossible to unlock everything in one go of the story. If you focus on what you specifically want, and keep yourself in Mercy's shoes throughout your reasoning. you will have a fun time. If you treat this like any other JRPG where you rush through the content to gain access to the whole world in order to discover all the things you left behind... you may be disappointed to discover that your chance has passed. So... if you do pick up this game, do so with the understanding that every person you save, every upgrade you make, and every fish pie you buy will come at some personal cost. If you can, you will experience one of the best realized stories this side of rpgmaker.

The H-scenes are pretty frequent... that's about the only good thing I can say. Unfortunately, pretty much every aspect of the game otherwise ranges from mediocre to terrible. If you're looking for an RPG or story, you MIGHT find something redeemable here; but if you're looking for the H in H-game to any degree, you're better off with something else (I'd recommend Princesses Never Lose, Evenicle, & Melty's Quest) - the artwork in this game is an absolute eyesore.
