Dark Stone: The Lightseeker is a rogue-like strategy game. It has the tag "deckbuilding" but its pretty different from other deckbuilders. You start out with 8 heroes (Your cards basically). All of them are on a field and you can place them in whichever field you want. Each hero has mana costs and every turn you have 5 mana. Your heroes can't attack together if they aren't connected on the field. The enemy chooses up to 3 heroes. You can see in which order they attack before you choose your heroes. The first hero attacks the first enemy and so on (if they don't have special abilities etc.). If 3 heroes fight against 2 enemies, the third will attack the enemies main health. If all enemies are dead or the health of the main character is zero you win. The same goes for you. After winning a battle you get to choose 1 of 3 new cards. You can swap your team between every battle. You also get items which you can equip on your heroes (for example +4 health or "every round the hero gains +1 strength and -1 health etc.). You also get gold, which you can use to buy items or cards in the shop for that specific run. After every run you gain exp and your level goes up as you unlock new heroes. You can use these new heroes from the start of each run if they are unlocked. The first run consists of 4 or 5 battles. If you win all of that, the next run will have one more fight and will be a bit harder overall. The artstyle is very beautiful imo and the translation is really good (german). The biggest negative aspect of the game is that you will quickly get overwhelmed by all these characters and different abilities. The tutorial tells you the basics of the game pretty quick, which is a good thing. I am all for a learning curve but its steep imo. You get 8 characters, all with different abilities and dozens of windows pop up if you hover over one. THEN you get so many different enemies (just in one battle) with different abilities and in every new battle there are dozens of new enemies with new abilities. If you fight against new enemies a window will pop up and explain the main mechanic of this type of enemy, but its still overwhelming in the beginning because a battle doesn't take that long. I mean, after a bit i pretty much got a bit of everything into my head but 'til than i had to force myself a bit to play a new run and i think thats the biggest hurdle for new players. I would recommend to change the frequency of learning new mechanics in the beginning. Maybe make it so, that there aren't that many type of enemies in the first or/and second/third run. As the difficulty goes up (after beating a run) you could put in more types of enemies in a run. Aside from that and if you can make it through the beginning it's a lot of fun. I also would recommend to give more to unlock aside from new heroes and adding big, special bosses. Like one giant hero instead of many small ones with a special mechanic. I think it would fit perfectly into this game and i am all for trying it out. 16,79€/18USD seems a bit high right now but you definitely notice that much effort and love went into making this game and it's still in early access. There are no cards, and the only thing that resembles deckbuilding is adding and removing minions to your "deck," which is effectively your chosen team for a battle. The game is in Early Access and nowhere near being finished as of writing. But what is there will already give you hours of fun. For this game, I think of it as being best played in short bursts that would retain the game's fun factor without becoming too redundant in nature. The game is easy to learn, with a good tutorial that teaches you the basics of the game but also allows you to make mistakes. You might fail a couple of the tutorial parts before coming to terms with the game's mechanics and get through it. The tutorial sections just reset if you don't make it through. You will start the main game with 4 units and you will be able to unlock and add on more by playing more. The difficulty of the enemies also increase as you play. The enemy will start with a few units in the beginning but after you win previously, the enemies will become more numerous. Games that have adaptive difficulties usually are able to hold a player's interest for longer. During the battles, you will go in and face off against an opponent. You will have mana to use and you can choose as many units as your mana limit allows. Your units are arranged in a grid on the screen and as long as the units are connected to each other, you can select them in sequential order of preferred actions. You and your opponent also have associated health and so using more units for each combat selection than your opponent will result in direct damage to the opponent. You will win if you defeat the opponent's minions or you cut down their health directly. Likewise, you can be attacked directly with more numbers. You will need to read and see what each unit does. You can do this against your opponent's selected units and actions, thus it's a strategy game that has an absolutely predictable outcome. Your choices will be important in keeping yourself and your units safe while trying your best to devastate the opposition. At the end of each round, you will be given the opportunity to shop for new items, get new units, etc. with the in-game currency that you earn by playing. Your minions' health pools will also be replenished after each round.
Graphics
The graphics are really good with a nice darker art style. There are some nice minion/environment designs that are fun to look at. There's a nice touch in-game that I found particularly amusing--the eyes of the minions all move in response to your mouse cursor, as if they are analysing your every action.
Music
The music fits quite well with the game.
Controls
The game can be fully played with a mouse.
Gameplay Video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zir_KbyATIc
Pricing
For an Early Access title I think €16.79/$19.99 is a bit steep. I would expect this price for a finished prduct. It will remain the same price until full release, with a plan for an increase after Early Access.
Verdict
This game is easy to learn, but quite hard to master. You have to do a lot of battle-planning and reading into the actions and results of your choices in combat vs those chosen by the opponents. You will need to rearrange your team to best suit your own needs. Because of the proximity (connected minion profiles on screen) needs for combined combat selections, you will need to do a bit of planning in terms of minion placement within your "deck." Once again, it does not feel like a deckbuilder and I think it's a bit misleading to label it as such. The price is a bit high, in all honesty, especially because there are plans to increase after Early Access, and the game is more suitable to be played in shorter sittings. I think I would start to be worn out by the repetitions if I tried to play it for longer sessions. Overall score: 7 (Initial Early Access Build as of 2020.10.12)
I received the product for free. I did not receive any compensation to write this review. A roguelike with a whole new formula. Each of your characters is connected to the other and you have to calmly plan each attack. I would not be good at describing in detail everything it can offer you but it was certainly a very pleasant surprise for me. So if you love roguelikes and want something that smells new, you should definitely try it. I have also prepared a video where I show you the initial tutorial. https://youtu.be/K52ScQOcWXg
III. VII. VIII. XII.
It's sort of like if Darkest Dungeon had a baby with Slay the Spire. It is still a work in progress. Some voice acting/narration would be fantastic. I'd also like a better English localization. The gameplay is solid if you can wrap your head around it. I'd give it a little while before picking it up. https://youtu.be/U86nHPyiMHI
Even though the early game may be boring, the game allow for in-depth strategy and planning, with gradual unlocks over time which allows for you to plan ahead with better starting teams and permits for you to build larger teams during the runs, while also increasing the maximum difficulty with each complete run.
