Need a hex editor in order to get it to not stutter. And I have spent more than enough time trying to find one.
30 Hours to clear on easy ~ Fun journey with some interesting ideas and great "visuals", especially love the clothing damage. Sadly, the grinding is a bit out of line so I recommend just cranking the difficulty down and enjoying it casually. Crashed every now and then so save often but still enjoyed it the whole way through. Loved the characters and dialogue.
Dark Rose Valkyrie is a story-driven Japanese role-playing game developed by Idea Factory and Compile Heart, and published internationally by Idea Factory International, that attempts to fuse traditional JRPG structure with visual novel storytelling and a central mystery built around distrust and betrayal. Set in an alternate modern world devastated by the Chimera virus, the game frames its narrative around humanity’s desperate struggle for survival after a mysterious meteorite known as the Black Garnet unleashes monstrous beings across the globe. Rather than focusing purely on epic fantasy or heroic adventure, the game adopts a darker, more grounded tone, emphasizing paranoia, moral ambiguity, and the emotional toll of command in a world where anyone could be hiding a deadly secret. The story follows Asahi Shiramine, a young but capable commander assigned to lead the Valkyrie Force, an elite military unit tasked with combating the Chimera threat. From the beginning, the narrative places heavy emphasis on character relationships and trust, as Asahi must rely on his teammates not only in battle but also in decision-making and investigation. A defining narrative mechanic is the presence of a traitor within the team, whose identity shifts depending on player choices and interactions. This idea injects tension into conversations and story scenes, encouraging players to pay attention to dialogue, body language, and inconsistencies during interviews. While the concept is compelling and adds replay value, its execution can feel lighter than expected, as the investigation mechanics sometimes lack the depth needed to fully capitalize on the psychological weight of suspicion. Gameplay is divided between lengthy narrative segments and combat-focused sections, creating a rhythm that alternates between reading-heavy storytelling and mechanical engagement. The visual novel-style sequences are where the game shines most, offering fully modeled characters, voiced dialogue, and expressive animations that help sell emotional moments. These scenes allow players to build bonds with squad members, learn about their backgrounds, and influence how relationships evolve over time. The pacing of these segments can be slow, but for players invested in character-driven stories, they form the emotional backbone of the experience. Combat in Dark Rose Valkyrie uses a time-based turn system where characters act according to gauges that fill in real time, allowing for combo attacks, coordinated strikes, and tactical positioning. Battles emphasize breaking enemy defenses and exploiting weaknesses, encouraging players to think beyond basic attack commands. When the system flows well, combat can feel strategic and rewarding, especially when chaining abilities together effectively. However, fights can also become drawn out, with lengthy animations and inconsistent difficulty scaling occasionally disrupting momentum. Over time, encounters may begin to feel repetitive, particularly during longer dungeon sequences. Exploration and mission structure reflect the game’s mid-budget origins. Environments are functional but often linear, with dungeons and overworld areas designed more for narrative progression than discovery. Side missions and optional objectives exist, but they rarely offer substantial variation, sometimes serving more as padding than meaningful world-building. While these elements contribute to character progression and resource accumulation, they can slow the overall pace of the game, especially for players eager to advance the story. Visually, the game presents a mixed but distinctive aesthetic. Character designs are a highlight, featuring clean anime-inspired models that convey personality and emotion effectively during dialogue scenes. In contrast, environments and textures can appear dated, lacking the detail and polish seen in higher-budget JRPGs. Despite this, the presentation remains cohesive, and the use of full-body character models during conversations helps differentiate the game from titles that rely solely on static portraits. Narratively, Dark Rose Valkyrie balances grim themes with lighter character moments, occasionally leaning into familiar anime tropes to relieve tension. This tonal contrast can be engaging, as it humanizes the cast and prevents the story from becoming relentlessly bleak. At the same time, it can feel uneven, particularly when humor or slice-of-life interactions interrupt moments of high narrative stakes. Still, the relationships between characters remain one of the game’s strongest aspects, often carrying the experience through slower sections. Overall, Dark Rose Valkyrie is an ambitious but uneven JRPG that prioritizes character interaction and narrative intrigue over technical refinement or mechanical innovation. Its central themes of trust, leadership, and hidden betrayal give it a unique identity within the genre, even if the execution does not always reach its full potential. For players who enjoy visual novel elements, anime-styled storytelling, and character-focused narratives, the game offers a memorable experience with multiple paths and outcomes worth revisiting. Those seeking tightly paced combat, expansive exploration, or cutting-edge presentation may find its limitations more apparent, but beneath its rough edges lies a game with clear creative intent and a strong emotional core. Rating: 5/10
+ Combat is pretty good - Almost everything else
