overall a good Visual Novel. can recommend it.
Is Date Warp a good game? No. Is Date Warp a bad game? No, but Date Warp just did not age well and in comparison with so many visual novels now, it just lacks passion. It's also relatively (5-6 hours playtime for every Ending (11). Pro: - Interesting UI Concept - Interesting Character Concepts - You can skip puzzles for choices you already did Neutral: - MC looks for 19 years pretty young - Before you can add your Choice, you need to solve a puzzle Contra: - Maybe I'm just dumb, but sometimes the puzzle was not solveable. But you can always restart the puzzle, since it generated itself randomly - I didn't like the female main character. She felt arrogant, was vegetarian, did not drink etc. She was just too prefabricated that a self inserting into this character was almost not possible for me. But at the same time, she felt useless. - Interactions feels forced - Romance feels forced and rushed (5 dudes in 11 different endings) - CG's (Half of them look really bad, where the normal character sprites look way better in comparison) - Some of the choices where.. not what I expected by the really defined character, like being flirty when she had no experiences. But that's just my opinion. What i liked about it, was the idea behind the visual novel. However, the mystery felt mostly like: We need a reason to gather this people here. That's it. It felt quite short and I think they people in there were way to relaxed (except on time) with what was going on and the one time was not about the mystery of the date warp thing. I would not recommend to buy this novel, since there are so many better visual novels that are free.
So, some context. I first discovered this game in 2010, but couldn't have it because I was 13 and my mom wouldn't buy it for me. Ever since, every now and then I'd think about it and get sad that I couldn't play it - until recently, when I remembered the game and realized that I am now an adult with a bank account and I can just buy it for myself now. So I did. It was weird actually playing it after all this time - the art style is kind of clunky and dated, but personally I found it charming rather than lazy (especially considering this is a game from 2010). ... At least, at first. The art for the CGs is very inconsistent. One of them was so bad, it almost looked unfinished. Then the two final ones for what I guess is the True Ending were miles ahead in terms of quality. I'd be lying if I said it didn't impact my enjoyment a little. Speaking of the True Ending, as it were, I have... mixed feelings about it. Well, in general, I have mixed feelings about romance VNs that shepherd you towards one specific character as the canonical outcome for the game, because it makes all the other routes feel pointless. This is more of a personal gripe I have with the genre as a whole, but it happens in this game so I felt the need to bring it up. The writing was... kind of a mixed bag. I'm sure if I played it when I was 13, I would've loved it, but then my standards were nonexistent then. The worldbuilding and story are pretty exciting and well-done, don't get me wrong. The problem is with the actual writing itself, which is... yeah, it's pretty clunky at times. There were a few scenes where the characters didn't feel emotionally consistent, and the conversation would jump from one topic to another without much of a transition. That said, I do feel the overall story makes up for it. When I was a kid, the puzzle you had to do to unlock different options seemed so cool and fun, but playing it now it just feels kind of tedious. If there was a plot reason for it, I'd be down, but as far as I can see there isn't one and it's just there to pad the game's run time. Which isn't particularly long, to be honest, though maybe I'm just used to visual novel routes that go on for hours apiece. If you follow a guide and use the fast forward function to skip read dialogue, you can 100% the game in around 4-5 hours. Though I wouldn't say that's a bad thing, necessarily - the routes do feel complete and the story wasn't rushed, and personally I'd rather a game be here for a good time rather than a long and boring time. In conclusion, do I recommend this game? Yes - you can probably see that at the top of the review. Even with all its flaws, it's a solid game with lovable characters and a fun and unique story that I had a lot of fun playing. Do I recommend it at full price? ... I wish I could say yes, but honestly, not really. To be blunt, I've played free games with a lot more content, polish, and quality control. It was worth it for me, for the emotional catharsis of being able to play this after wanting it for 11 years, but unless you've had a similar experience I'd say wait for it to go on sale.
This is a bad game but Alben is a funny little handsome man and we kiss sometimes. My friends say I have bad test in men. I can't recommend this game but I love it. It's a bad game that I love. If you're able to see the vision and love in even a game that is by all accounts bad, then go play Date Warp. I hope the creators sleep well every night. They have wonderful hearts.
Date Warp is a visual novel that successfully combines romance, mystery, and science fiction into a compelling interactive experience. Developed and published by Hanako Games, it presents a story that begins with a seemingly ordinary first date before quickly evolving into an unsettling mystery involving a secluded mansion, a group of strangers, and an inexplicable series of events. Instead of following the familiar structure of a conventional dating simulator, the game places equal emphasis on uncovering secrets and making difficult choices, creating a narrative where every conversation and decision has lasting significance. This balance between character-driven storytelling and suspense gives the game a distinctive identity that remains engaging from beginning to end. The narrative is easily the game's greatest strength. Players step into the role of Janet, a college freshman whose quiet evening unexpectedly becomes a desperate struggle to understand the bizarre circumstances surrounding her. As she interacts with the mansion's other occupants, each individual gradually reveals hidden motivations and personal histories that reshape the player's understanding of the overall plot. The cast is diverse, with every major character contributing unique perspectives and emotional depth to the unfolding mystery. Romantic possibilities naturally emerge throughout the story, but they never overshadow the central narrative. Instead, relationships become another avenue for discovering important information, encouraging players to carefully consider whom they choose to trust. One of Date Warp's most appealing features is its branching narrative. Rather than presenting a single linear storyline, the game offers numerous paths that reveal different aspects of the mystery. Every route uncovers new clues while leaving enough unanswered questions to motivate additional playthroughs. The multiple endings ensure that player choices genuinely matter, rewarding experimentation and exploration. Instead of relying on obvious good or bad outcomes, the story presents consequences that reflect the complexity of the decisions made throughout the adventure, making each completed route feel meaningful and worthwhile. The gameplay extends beyond reading dialogue by incorporating light puzzle-solving elements that fit naturally within the investigation. These sections provide brief moments of interaction that help maintain pacing without becoming overly difficult or distracting. The puzzles reinforce the feeling that the player is actively participating in solving the mansion's secrets rather than simply observing events unfold. Combined with the branching dialogue system, these mechanics help distinguish Date Warp from visual novels that rely exclusively on text-based storytelling. Artistically, the game features colorful anime-inspired character designs that effectively communicate emotions during conversations and dramatic scenes. Character portraits are expressive enough to strengthen both romantic interactions and moments of tension, while the background artwork establishes the mansion as an isolated and mysterious location. Although the visuals reflect the era in which the game was created, they continue to serve the story well through clean presentation and memorable character designs. The soundtrack complements the atmosphere with music that shifts comfortably between lighthearted moments, emotional scenes, and suspenseful discoveries, helping maintain immersion throughout the lengthy narrative. The game also benefits from its thoughtful pacing. Early chapters focus on introducing the cast and establishing relationships before gradually increasing the tension through unexpected revelations and escalating danger. Science fiction concepts are introduced carefully, allowing players to piece together the larger mystery without overwhelming them with excessive exposition. Mature themes such as violence, strong language, alcohol references, and sexual dialogue appear throughout the story, but these elements are used to enhance character development and dramatic tension rather than simply adding shock value. Date Warp stands out because it successfully blends several genres into a cohesive experience that rewards patience and curiosity. Its memorable cast, well-constructed mystery, meaningful choices, and impressive replay value make it far more than a typical romance-focused visual novel. While players seeking constant action may find its dialogue-heavy structure slower than expected, those who appreciate intricate storytelling, multiple endings, and character-driven narratives will discover an experience that remains satisfying long after the first ending. Its clever combination of romance, suspense, and science fiction continues to make it one of Hanako Games' most memorable releases. Rating: 8/10
