Long ago, the Vile God and the Goddess waged war with each other. Equally matched, they were sealed away in another world… Now a lazy young man named Fang somehow finds himself a key part of this war he’d really rather not deal with, but fate beckons in this uncommon RPG!
Vorwort

This thing has issues even launching, looks like it tries to brick my entire pc, all monitors going full spastic, blinking... oh look my wallpapers are now all black... and my windows taskbar, icons, and others are all dissapears... time to try to restart pc and see if it still starts up... (No I am not joking all of this happened) *Edit:* PC did not die, but had to restart, unplug+replug TV, and game was set to wonky resolution I have on none of my screens... always fun with games not being on standard borderless fullscreen, but rarely does any game make the pc go all spastic like this and Sekiro did for me...
It's Good but just get Advent Dark Force.
Fairy Fencer F, developed by Idea Factory and Compile Heart and published by Idea Factory International, is a traditional JRPG that embraces many of the genre’s familiar conventions while attempting to inject personality through its characters and tone. Set in a fantasy world shaped by an ancient war between a goddess and a vile god, the story revolves around magical weapons called Furies and the warriors who wield them. The narrative follows Fang, an unwilling and often comically selfish protagonist who becomes entangled in a quest to gather these powerful relics, accompanied by a cast of eccentric allies. From the outset, the game makes it clear that while the premise carries serious undertones, the storytelling leans heavily into humor and character-driven interactions. The narrative is one of the game’s more engaging aspects, largely due to its cast. Fang’s reluctant hero persona contrasts with the more earnest or exaggerated personalities of his companions, creating a steady flow of dialogue that mixes lighthearted banter with occasional attempts at deeper themes. The writing often prioritizes humor, sometimes to the point where dramatic moments lose their impact, but it also gives the game a distinct charm. While the overarching plot follows a fairly predictable path, the character interactions help maintain interest, even when the story itself does not break new ground. Gameplay follows a structure that will feel immediately familiar to fans of Compile Heart titles. Progression alternates between a central hub where players manage equipment, accept quests, and trigger story events, and a series of dungeons where exploration and combat take place. These dungeons are generally linear, with straightforward layouts and limited environmental variety. While functional, they lack the complexity or visual diversity needed to remain consistently engaging over long periods. The loop of entering a dungeon, completing objectives, and returning to the hub becomes repetitive, especially as the game progresses. Combat introduces a turn-based system with a light tactical layer, allowing characters to move within a defined area before executing actions. This adds a degree of positioning strategy, particularly when coordinating attacks or avoiding enemy abilities. As players advance, the system expands with additional mechanics such as skills, magic, and customizable abilities tied to equipped Furies. The combat gradually becomes more dynamic, encouraging experimentation with different party compositions and setups. However, despite these additions, encounters can become routine, with limited enemy variety and predictable patterns reducing the sense of challenge over time. A notable feature is the Fury system, which allows players to place collected weapons into specific points in the world to unlock bonuses or alter gameplay conditions. This mechanic introduces a layer of customization and strategic decision-making, as players must consider how to best utilize their resources. While it adds some depth, its impact is somewhat inconsistent, and it often feels underutilized compared to the game’s other systems. Visually, Fairy Fencer F presents a contrast between strong character design and less impressive environments. The character artwork is vibrant and expressive, contributing significantly to the game’s personality, while the in-game models and environments tend to be more basic and repetitive. This disparity can make the world feel less immersive than the characters inhabiting it. The soundtrack, composed by notable industry talent, adds to the overall presentation, providing a fitting backdrop for both lighthearted and more intense moments. Pacing is one of the game’s more noticeable weaknesses. The combination of repetitive dungeon design, frequent backtracking, and a slow narrative progression can make the experience feel stretched. While there is a substantial amount of content, including side quests and optional activities, not all of it feels meaningful. At times, progression can feel more like a matter of persistence than engagement, particularly during sections that require extended grinding or revisiting similar areas. Despite these issues, the game maintains a certain appeal through its consistency and character-driven focus. The combat system, while not groundbreaking, is reliable and becomes more enjoyable as players gain access to its full range of mechanics. The humor and interactions between characters provide a steady source of entertainment, helping to offset the more repetitive aspects of the gameplay. It is a game that does not attempt to reinvent the genre but instead offers a familiar experience with its own personality. Ultimately, Fairy Fencer F is a solid but unremarkable entry in the JRPG genre. It delivers an experience that will resonate with players who enjoy character-focused storytelling and traditional gameplay loops, but it struggles to stand out due to its lack of innovation and uneven pacing. While it shows moments of charm and potential, it does not fully capitalize on them, resulting in a game that is enjoyable in parts but rarely exceptional. Rating: 8/10
found this game cuz the person i always used to hang out with used ethel as her vrchat avatar. i already liked her for her character design, but playing the game only made me love the character even more. she’s definitely 1 of my top waifus. just wish this game was more popular, there’s not enough art of her. not a fan of how the story resets every time you beat the final boss, but it’s definitely unique and nothing i’ve seen another game. would love to never see this feature again XD. a very grindy and fun experience getting 100% achievements. can’t wait to play advent dark force and refrain chord.
Fairy Fencer F is a lighthearted JRPG that leans into anime comedy, colorful character banter, and a simple-but-addictive loop of exploring dungeons, collecting power-ups, and watching your party grow stronger. It doesn’t try to be a massive open-world epic; instead, it feels like a compact adventure that keeps moving, with frequent scenes and jokes between battles. If you like JRPGs that don’t take themselves too seriously, it’s an easy game to settle into. The story starts with a classic fantasy hook: magical weapons are stuck in the world, and pulling them out awakens powers tied to ancient conflict. From there, it mixes “chosen fighters” mythology with an intentionally playful tone—your protagonist is more lazy and sarcastic than heroic, and the cast often undercuts dramatic moments with humor. It’s not the deepest narrative in the genre, but it’s consistent about its identity: bright, quirky, and character-driven. Combat is turn-based and designed to feel fast rather than overly tactical. You’ll spend most fights managing skills, MP, buffs, and positioning while trying to set up big damage turns. As you unlock more abilities, battles become less about basic attacks and more about chaining skills efficiently and exploiting enemy weaknesses. Boss fights usually ask for a bit more planning, but the overall vibe stays approachable. A defining mechanic is the sword system: you find and pull weapons (fencers) from the environment, and those choices feed directly into character growth and world effects. It gives progression a “collect and customize” flavor—every new sword can mean new stats, new passives, and a reason to revisit areas. It’s also a nice way to make exploration feel rewarding even when dungeons are fairly straightforward. Dungeon design is functional rather than inspired: corridors, combat rooms, treasure corners, repeat. The charm comes more from the pacing and the steady drip of upgrades than from intricate level layouts. If you’re sensitive to repetition, you’ll notice the recycled structures, but if you like grinding a bit while listening to dialogue and music, it’s comfortable. Presentation is very “Compile Heart”: bright character art, expressive portraits, and an anime aesthetic that carries the game even when environments are plain. Music generally matches the tone—cheerful and energetic—while voice acting (depending on version/settings) helps the comedic timing land. The game’s personality is its strongest visual asset, much more than raw graphical fidelity. Overall, Fairy Fencer F is a good pick if you want a turn-based JRPG that’s cozy, humorous, and progression-heavy, without demanding extreme strategy or dozens of complex subsystems. Its weaknesses are typical for the style—repetitive dungeons and a story that’s more fun than profound—but the charm, party dynamics, and steady customization make it enjoyable. If you want a breezy fantasy RPG with lots of banter and constant little upgrades, it delivers.
