This is by and far one of the best hybrid Action/Strategy games period to this very day. Keep in mind the combat system revolves heavily around a popular game at that time which was Archon/Archon Ultra. Very possible you won't enjoy the top-down melee but if you can suffer through that it's a very rich game with tons of replay value. One could hope that at least Remote Play can be made to work on it in the future so online play can be done as local multiplayer which it does support. Also, this game's difficulty is based on non-modern (casual) standards and so you'll want to keep that in mind when picking the harder AI unless you like losing.
It is just as I remember with emulator like overlays for the visuals. The game itself was fantastic and deep. I still want to play around with this more but it for the price point, it is worth the install. Hopefully, with enough buzz, we may see a true remake in the future.
Thank you, i really missed this game.
I played this game a lot when it originally came out. I hope I can figure out how to make it recognize my controller. I'm not great with keyboard controls, and when it switches to the battles I really need that. Its a turn based strategy game that also requires your skill in battle to win the location, and once you (or they) find your "Orb keeper" and beat them its over. You have several traps and types of pieces with different abilities to choose from, with points to buy whichever ones you want. So both sides will most likely not have exactly they same ones. If any of you have played Archon Ultra, in some ways its similar, where you each move pieces around the board(in this case landscape) and you have to win the battles to take any square, its not like chess where you going there means you win it. If you like turned based, with some fighting to actually take the spots, you should check it out.
Amazing Classic!
Arhcon Classic.
Even though I am recommending this game, it must be understood it has two very frustrating problems, on of which *is* Steam's fault, and one of which is not. The problem that *is* Steam's fault is saying the game cannot support the use of a controller. Folks, yes it can! I remember playing the PC disc version decades ago... *with* a controller! All you have to do, *in* the game, is go to the settings menu. Change "keyboard 1," and "keyboard 2" to "Controller 1," and "Controller 2." Then make sure to do the "Calibration" procedure from the same menu, to make sure your controller ill function properly. The problem that is *not* Steam's fault is the same one I had decades ago. It is very tedious and frustrating to have to math out the purchasing of creatures and the rings one wants to give to each of them. The game needs a feature to create "customized" versions of the creatures. That is, a creature with curated ring outfitting. Yes, of course, these "customized" versions would cost more than their ringless versions. I would expect that, and am not asking for any discounts. A Water Elemental, for example, costs 60 game credits. If I want to give it 5 rings that cost 120 credits, I would expect to pay 180 credits for that "customized" creature. I just hate getting the budgeting wrong, and ending up with wasted resources, or not enough of the correct rings. Let's just streamline and expedite that. How hard can that programming challenge be?
