Somehow, I've never heard of this game until a friend of mine talked about it. It feels awesome to clear a room quickly when the timing is right and thankfully, if I'm not wrong, there's zero input lag. So you can either be badass or fail miserably as it's pretty easy to die. But you don't want to stop where you lost. When you die, you want to get right back to it until you succeed. Not many games have that kind of difficulty these days, so this is truly a hidden gem to me.
I'll be honest, I've tried to start Shovel Knight multiple times and I always end up falling asleep. Cyber Shadow has such meticulously crafted level design, perfectly tailored to mess with you in the most classic ways possible. Enemies that block the edges of cliffs, flying enemies attacking when you try to cross platforms, stunning you and throwing you into electrified water. Dodging lasers and chainsaws while trying to hit a weak point that constantly fires bullets. Luckily, you have more modern mechanics; you can parry, but it's similar to Metal Gear Rising, where the action is a limited window where you move the stick towards the projectile and then have to hit it to send it back. A dash that isn't just a matter of pressing a button; you have to get a running start first. When you get the double jump, all your abilities are boosted, and although it seems like you become super overpowered, the challenge also increases. When you get the hang of the controls, you feel like a super ninja slicing robots in half, and it's incredible.
this game's a lil' strange to me because, there was only one real sore spot to me in the story, now it's not that "oh, my NES homage game doesn't have the story telling chops of a playstation 5 theatrical triple a experience", no. The thing is I WAS actually really immersed into the world of this game, the premise of a magical ninja clan & Mega-Man-like technology co-existing in this apocalyptic desolate robotic wasteland is fun, the logs & messages from wayward spirits that illuminate just how grim the setting was did their job at further immersing me, and all the characters in the cutscenes have these really fun designs, Shadow looks cool both when he was a human and a cyborg, Legion, your lil' robot buddy is super cute, & I'll admit, The Master is kind of pretty too. It's the kind of world that I would have loved to have been obsessed with & chatted about with other Cyber Shadow fans for a lil' while after i beat it. But I know this game's already too niche to have a longlasting fanbase for that kind of thing, no the real problem is that it's got a strong setting, but the story itself was kind of whatever. The main bad guy's insane plans aren't elaborated on since level 2 and don't change in the final level, your love interest in The Master doesn't get any screentime at all with another twist tied to her that, really doesn't change much about the story either, you have a rival i forgot the name of that gets no time either, guess it doesn't help your main character doesn't talk to make that rivalry all that special. I don't know, it's a weird case where the game MADE me care about its story, and as someone that loves storytelling in indies & triple as alike, idk whether to commend it for GIVING me the capacity to be disapointed, or upset its great tone-setting affected my judgement on the game this much. Anyways this game is pretty fun lol, and when I learned it was only made by ONE guy I was actually shocked (& grew to get over my gripes with the story even more). it's a fairly difficult game, but it's a pretty LONG game with alot of variety in enemies, environments, unique moves, bosses, and even special weapons. The Special Weapons are mostly tied around the game's unique checkpoint system, and honestly I REALLY love it. I know some wish this game had a shop you can use the currency on, but it's functionality with being able to upgrade checkpoints with extra items & replenishments is already a super interesting and elegant system that lets you get a lil' powerboost in areas you may find too difficult without. You don't have enough money to upgrade every checkpoint fully upon first sight so you're incentivized to budget a lil', but you can still grind money from enemies so that you can ALWAYS eventually buy something at a hard checkpoint, being able to buy a special breakable weapon also makes the system feel less like a crutch and more of a "Would you like to make this part of the level a lil' more fun"? kind of deal, cuz the special weapons ARE pretty interesting! It's easily my favorite system in the game and it sets the mood of it being nothing more than a Cybernetic Ninja on a mission who doesn't have the time to buy extra gear like some kind of RPG character. Even if you can't BUY permanent upgrades, Cyber Shadow's campaign DOES evolve by giving you a permanent upgrade at the end of practically every level. The earlier you are in the game, the more the game resembles a hard classic platformer swarmed with enemies like Ninja Gaiden or Ghosts and Goblins. But the powerboost by the end is super crazy & I love it. I'm being vague about it, but the final upgrade you get practically DOUBLES the functionality of your character and I'm not exaggerating, I mean like EVERYTHING about your character is just, better, & the game does a good job at evolving the level design alongside the player's newfounded abilities. It's great. I wanted to play this a lil' bit before dipping my toes into Mina The Hollower, & while I'm sure Yacht Club Game's gigantic 6-years-in-development mega game is going to be a real showstopper, I still commend MekaSkull for making such a rock-solid package, & I look forward to whatever he makes next!
good game
